Gender has never been more fluid than it is now. From discovering our sexuality, to defining our identities and pronouns, society is slowly (but surely) breaking down the binary codes that humans have been placed under for so long.
With this new era of acceptance, we can begin to open up conversations around our bodies and how we want to make our way in the world. In this episode of The RED Tales, we chat with Chloe Watts, a young woman diagnosed with Turner syndrome. Through her diagnosis and medical experience, Chloe is reevaluating what femininity and identifying as a woman actually means to her.

Most of us are taught consent as children. You learn that you have to ask to play with your sibling’s toy. That you can’t eat chocolate without your mum’s permission. That you have to ask your friends if you can visit.
But what happens when we get older? As we begin to navigate sexual relationships as young adults, consent isn’t something that is widely spoken about.
In this episode, we sit down with Angie Wan, co-founder of Consent Labs. Angie is part of a team travelling to schools and universities to raise awareness around consent, sexual harassment and assault. Because we should all be asking for consent… no matter the context.

Gaslighting. Many of us will experience it at some point in our lives. Whether it’s a friend’s nasty manipulation tactics, a mean boss insisting they didn’t allow you to take time off (despite the conversation definitely happening) or a partner depicting emotionally cruel patterns, gaslighting is psychological abuse that could happen to anyone.
The one defining factor? It’s hard to be aware when it’s happening in the first place. In today’s episode we sit down with Emilia McGrath who shares their story of being cruelly gaslighted by someone who was supposed to care about them the most; their high school boyfriend.

Friendships can be one of the best parts of life. Whether you have a strong girl gang or just one loyal friend you can depend on, it’s so important to have people in your corner. People who are ready to celebrate with you on the good days and be a shoulder to cry on during the tough days.
But what happens when those friendships begin to turn sour? In today’s episode we chat with Defne Huzmeli who reflects on the way her highschool friendship turned toxic (really toxic) and how she found a path forward from the pain.

Rejection. Hate the word, hate the feeling. One of the more brutal emotions us humans experience. Rejection can feel like a dagger in the back or a punch to the gut as you sit there wondering what on earth you did wrong.
Sometimes, it can also (understandably) take years to get over as you recover from the emotional wounds. Today’s guest, Rachael Adamson, bravely recounts the events of her most awful rejection during high school and how it’s affected her relationships as an adult.

Sexism exists in every environment, not only with the planes of scandalous headlines and court hearings. Most of the time, sexism occurs in small, everyday social settings. From lingering looks and off the cuff comments in the boardroom to everyday scenarios that have seen offensive behaviour dismissed as ‘banter’. Enough is enough. Today we’re joined by Teresa Li as she shares her experience of sexism within highschool and how we can enact change in our everyday lives.

Today’s episode cover’s topics of mental health, depression and anxiety and may be triggering to some listeners. If you or a loved one is in need of help, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Sometimes all we have are feelings - senses that engulf us, stop us. Feelings that make us paranoid or curious, self-aware or self-inflicted. Mostly, they leave us exhausted. Charlotte Middleton was exhausted. She didn’t know why she felt sad as a kid but she knew the feeling wasn’t something minor, it felt different and she would be different because of it.
‘Invisible’ and ‘misunderstood’ are the best words we can put towards having a lived experience of mental health. Holding it within you can feel like gambling with yourself: you never know what side you’re going to see, and you never know what that means until life unfolds around you. Today, Charlotte shares what unfolded then and how it’s played out now, drawing a path of hope, compassion and kindness for the future.

We say no and today’s guest agrees, as national fencer Violet Hull shares her first experience competing on her period, what it really means to ‘listen to your body,’ and how to take care down there.
