In his latest book, "How To Think Like Socrates", Donald builds on his previous work on Stoicism and lifts the lid on Socrates, the world's greatest philosopher. Given that Socrates lived 2500 years ago, what advice would he give out today? What would he conclude from our money and status driven culture? What would he advise us on our fears of death? What would be his thoughts on escaping the hedonic treadmill? Donald expounds the Socratic method, it's purpose and how we can use it to enhance our lives and clarify our thoughts. We discuss that, and so much more in this episode. • Nick Ridley is a professional gundog trainer, photographer, and author. For several decades, he's written about working dogs for all the prominent fieldsports magazines. He also runs and operates a photography business and posts videos about his days spent shooting with his cocker spaniels on YouTube.

But why did he choose cocker spaniels? A breed that is harder to train and control than the reliable springer or Labrador? We discuss if cockers are the Land Rovers of the canine world, why they're unvalued in shooting compared to a peg dog - and yet need far more training, and why Nick doesn't pick up anymore.

Nick also shares his thoughts on dogs vs. bitches, how many dogs are the right amount of dogs, and why rough shooting is more akin to hunting.

  • Professor Ken Dark is a British archeologist with honorary professorships from several European and American universities, has written over 11 books and multiple academic articles, and has directed and co-directed many excavations and survey projects on the 1st millennium AD.

From Roman and post-Roman Britain and the Byzantine Middle East to the Archeology of early Christian Israel, Ken is a global expert on all these matters.

In his most recent book, The Archaeology of Jesus’s Nazareth, Ken puts forward a popular account of what the town of Nazareth would have been like in the time of Jesus. He asks if Jesus was really a carpenter, or if it is a mistranslation. Ken discovered what many believe was Jesus’s childhood home, but was it?

We also discuss if the Empress Helena actually found the Cross, what was we learn from Jesus’s youth, the Christian Pilgrimage, why Nazareth was so different to it’s surrounding areas in that time, if the lack of certainty frustrates Ken, and why we still use BC/ AD given that most of the archaeology work undertaken is secular.

  • Harry Donoghue is an Oxford graduate, online creator, and educator.

The Aeneid by Virgil is one of antiquity's best-known works. Considered to be the follow-on from Homer's Odyssey and Iliad, the poem charts the story of Aeneas, a Trojan prince who flees the destruction of Troy and finds the first settlement in Italy, which later became Rome.

But why has it stood the test of time? Why should we bother studying it? Who is Virgil and what is his background? Did he steal from Homer? How does the Aeneid echo down the ages? Can we not discard it as 2000-year-old propaganda?

In this episode, we answer all those questions and so many more. After this conversation, you'll be equipped to read the Aeneid for yourself with all the required context and witness firsthand why this text has stood the test of time.

  • Nick Compton is a former cricket player and England batsman who is now an author and photographer. In today's episode he lifts the curtain behind the scenes of international cricket. From training routines, the evolution of the game, and players' wages, to explaining the background of the fielding pitch named “silly mid-off”. Nick then opens up about his struggle from professional to retirement, how he’s tried to fill the hole of cricket, his love of photography and its correlations to the game, and so much more.

Nick is brutally honest about his journey and this is a seriously insightful conversation. If you enjoyed this episode, I’d highly recommend picking up Nick’s book called “Legacy” as he delves into the topics we discussed in further detail and makes for a riveting read.

  • Harry Donoghue is an Oxford graduate who runs an Instagram page dedicated to Latin and poetry.

We discuss a wide range of topics in today's episode, from the two Latin phrases on the Great Seal of the United States and what they mean, why things can be solved by walking, why the 9/11 monument in New York which quotes Virgil is wrong, why Churchill wasn’t clever enough to study Latin, what John Paul Sartre and Achilles had in common, is the Iliad really historically accurate? And so much more.

Harry was engaging, enthusiastic, and erudite and I really enjoyed this conversation, I hope you will too…
