Sajah Popham from The School of Evolutionary Herbalism explains why herbal remedies sometimes fail. The issue is rarely the herbs themselves. Instead, it's the intake process that misses critical details about the person and their tissue state. Through the lens of vitalist herbalism, Sajah breaks down what you need to do to refocus your intake sessions, so you can nail the remedy for your client every time.
Here's what you'll learn:
Why choosing the wrong herb can worsen symptoms
Why "good for" herbal thinking often leads to poor remedy selection
How temperature, moisture, and tone influence pathology
The five key observations used to assess tissue states
How to use the OPQRST intake method in clinical herbalism
Why symptom quality matters more than disease labels
How aggravation and palliation reveal energetic patterns
The role of constitution versus current imbalance
How weather, seasons, and environment affect tissue states
Why tongue diagnosis is one of the most valuable assessment tools in herbal medicine
How to think about energetics in a practical, grounded, clinical way

βLet's be honest, fevers suck, and they make you feel miserable. But should we make the fever go away so we can feel better? Actually, no, that would be a mistake. Fever is an intelligent response of the body that should be supported rather than suppressed. It plays a very important role in healing the body, and this has shaped the perspectives and practices of traditional herbalists since humans first began using plants as medicine.
In this post, we'll discuss the purpose of fevers, how to treat them, and I'll delve into my top five diaphoretic herbs for supporting the body through the febrile response.
Here's what you'll learn:
Why fever is a vital, intelligent healing response and usually shouldn't be suppressed
The core principle of treating febrile conditions regardless of pathogen (virus, bacteria, etc.)
The difference between stimulant and relaxant diaphoretics, and when to use each type
How diaphoretics support the body by driving heat outward and relieving surface tension
Why hot water and tea preparation enhance the effectiveness of diaphoretic herbs
How to match herbs to the stage and presentation of the fever
A clinical breakdown of five key febrile remedies: Elderflower, Lemon Balm, Yarrow, Black Cohosh, and Boneset, and how and when to use each herb with preparation information
Why the term "antiviral" is often misleading, and how to think more precisely about herbal actions
How to formulate teas for palatability, strength, and compliance
The role of fasting during fever and restoring digestion afterward
Additional herbal allies from the kitchen and clinic for febrile support
Other supportive therapies for fever
A step-by-step therapeutic regimen for fever support and recovery
Why suppressing a fever can prolong illness, and how proper herbal treatment can shorten its duration

How Cleavers' salty taste and juicy leaves translate into effects on the water pathways in the body
Why you need this herb if you get chronic urinary tract infections

Explore health and disease, not as fixed states but as a dynamic spectrum.
Learn how herbal medicine can uniquely support people at every stage of this journey by matching the strength of the remedy to the severity of the imbalance, rather than waiting for diagnosable disease to set in.
Here's what you'll learn:
Why health and disease are better understood as a continuum, rather than a binary
The concept of "homeodynamis" and why balance is always in motion
7 key stages of health: the enlightened state, peak health, constitutional imbalance, acute sickness or injury, generalized illness, disease, and death
How early imbalances show up before diagnosable disease
Why herbal medicine excels in the "in between" stages that conventional medicine often overlooks
How to match herb strength, dosage, and strategy to each stage of imbalance
When mild nutritive herbs are appropriate, and when stronger remedies are required
Why lifestyle and diet must come before herbs in many cases
How constitutional patterns shape both resilience and vulnerability

What really goes into the herbal products we rely on every day?
In this conversation, Sajah sits down with anthropologist, author, and founder of the Sustainable Herbs Initiative, Ann Armbrecht, to explore the hidden journey of herbs β from field to finished product β and the complex web of relationships, ethics, and decisions that shape their quality.
Sajah and Ann discuss the gap between traditional herbal values and modern industry realities, and what it means to practice integrity in herbal medicine today.
This is an invitation to look more deeply β to "see double" β and to connect with the people, plants, and places behind the medicine.
Here's what you'll learn in this interview:
Why understanding the herbal supply chain matters for both quality and ethics
The hidden realities of global sourcing, mechanization, and manufacturing
What "seeing double" meansβand how it changes your relationship to herbal medicine
How working conditions and human care directly impact plant quality
The role of certifications, transparency, and traceability (and their limitations)
Why relationshipsβnot just sourcing locationβare the key to sustainability
What the "laral value" of a plant is and how intention shows up in modern herbalism
Practical ways to engage more consciously as an herbal consumer or practitioner

Spring has officially sprung.
The birds are chirping, the plants are waking up, and the earth is on the move again. It's a beautiful time of yearβand here in the Pacific Northwest, we welcome the lifting of the cold, the retreat of the rain, and the chance to head back outside to enjoy nature's splendor and get our gardens growing.
But spring's return comes at a high cost for many due to seasonal allergies.
If you're one of the millions of people who suffer from seasonal allergies, stepping outside can bring so much discomfort and suffering that it hardly seems worth it. You might choose to stay inside, avoiding the warm, sunny days simply because your allergies make being outside unbearable.
In this episode, we're diving into the dynamics of seasonal allergies. There's a lot to cover, so this will be a two-part series.
You may just be looking for remediesβand we'll get thereβbut first, we need some context. Understanding the "why" behind seasonal allergies provides a broader perspective on what's happening and how to identify the root cause.
In Part One, we'll explore the background and context of seasonal allergies, including:
The contributing factors behind allergies and intolerance
An esoteric perspective to complement physiological understanding
The difference between allergies and intolerances
What immunological load isβand how to remain asymptomatic
With this foundation in place, Part Two will cover the therapeutic strategy and approach. Let's dive right in!

We are now into Aries season β our first sign of the yearly zodiac. In honor of the astrological new year, we're kicking off a quarterly Element series here on the Plant Path, which we'll do at the equinoxes β in Aries and Libra, and at the solstices β in the signs of Cancer and Capricorn.
Today, in honor of Aries and the recent equinox, we'll discuss the first Element: Fire, the spark of life, which governs vitality, transformation, and the movement of energy through people and plants. We'll explore how Fire expresses itself through humans and through plants, offering a deeper lens for understanding constitution, physiology, and plant energetics.
Here's what you'll learn:
Why the Elements form the foundation of traditional medicine systems worldwide
How the Fire Element emerges in alchemy, astrology, and herbalism
The role of the Fire Element in human physiology, including the HPA axis, circulation, and vital force
Key differences between the three Fire signs: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
How Fire moves through the body as a coordinated energetic system
The core traits of Fire-type constitutions in people
How to recognize Fire Element signatures in plants through morphology, taste, and energetics
The primary actions of Fire herbs including stimulation, circulation, and immune activation
How Fire herbs support (or balance) excess and deficiency patterns in the body
Examples of classic Fire Element plants

Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology?
This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own⦠throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, "I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much."
But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature.
When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people.
This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy.
It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have availableβor rather the time you createβto optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac.
As with anything worth learning, you must make time to study, integrate, and practice. Unfortunately, it won't magically appear. What differentiates a good herbalist or astrologer from a great one is discipline and consistency in studying and gaining experience. And it's about using your time strategically. What follows is one year's worth of study. By the end of that year, you will have a solid foundation in both astrological medicine and clinical herbal medicine.ββββββββββββ

In this episode, Sajah talks about how to assess a person's constitution through the natal chart and why this matters for effective holistic herbalism. You'll learn how the rising sign, planetary placements, and the 1st to 6th house relationship reveal underlying patterns that determine health, imbalance, and therapeutic strategy.
Here's what you'll learn:
What "constitution" means in holistic medicine β and why it's foundational
Why treating symptoms without constitutional assessment often fails
The difference between prakruti (core constitution) and vikruti (current imbalance) in Ayurveda, and how they relate to the natal chart
The #1 mistake beginners make in medical astrology
Why the rising sign is the true constitutional doorway
How to assess constitution through: the rising sign's element, mode, and ruling planet, planets conjunct the ascendant, the ruling planet's placement, strength, and dignity
How the 1st house and 6th house form a quincunx, revealing health vulnerabilities
A breakdown of the GeminiβScorpio elimination axis as a case study
When the rising sign can be overridden (stelliums, stationary planets, elemental dominance)
Why constitutional knowledge should guide herbal formulation

In medical astrology, the Sun represents the gravitational center of the psyche and of the body. Just as the planets orbit the Sun, so too does our physiology organize itself around a central core of vitality, expressed through the heart, the circulation of blood, and the distribution of warmth throughout our organism.
When the solar principle is strong, we see resilience, clarity, steady immunity, and a sense of inner coherence. When it is weak, patterns of fatigue, coldness, poor circulation, and psychoemotional instability may emerge.
In this episode, I'll explore four medicinal plants that are powerful expressions of the solar archetype. Through the lenses of heart, warmth, vitality, and spirit, we'll examine how Hawthorn, Angelica, Ashwagandha, and St. John's Wort restore the solar force within us, bridging alchemical philosophy with grounded clinical application.
Here's what you'll learn:
The deeper alchemical and medical astrology meaning of the Sun as the center of the psyche and the body
The Sun's rulership of the heart, cardiovascular system, and core vitality
How solar vitality influences immune strength and resilience
Why Hawthorn is a primary cardiovascular trophorestorative and Shen stabilizer
How Angelica restores warmth, circulation, and digestive fire in cold, deficient patterns
How Ashwagandha builds steady, calm vitality rather than overstimulation
How St. John's Wort protects and uplifts the psychoemotional "solar spirit," including its liver and nervous system connections

Most traditions of herbal medicine across the world use the fundamental principle of antipathetic medicine in their approach to therapeutics. But in the practice of alchemical medicineβbased on Paracelsianismβ and in astro-herbalism, another approach is commonly used: sympathetic medicine. In this episode, we'll explore some of the principles of sympathetic medicine, how it differs from the antipathetic approach, and how we can work with it to deepen our understanding of plant to planet correspondences.
Here's an overview of what you'll learn:
The key differences between sympathetic and antipathetic medicine
How to think through planetary correspondences in plants and more importantly, in practice
The various layers of herbal sympathy to planets such as organ affinities, energetics, and herbal actions
How herbs can paradoxically embody both sympathetic AND antipathetic qualities to a singular planetary force
Refining clinical application through the Triune System
Warning: this is a slightly more advanced discussion relating to astro-herbalism and planetary correspondences in plants. If you're not familiar with this topic it might be a bit complex!

If you've ever wondered how astrology can interface with medicine, and whether it really works, you're in for a treat!
I am delighted to share my interview with Judith Hill, who has been my teacher and mentor for over 15 years. Since we first met, she has profoundly influenced me as an herbalist, practitioner, and individual. Her guidance has been instrumental in helping me comprehend the profound impact of the celestial realm on us as humans, constantly inspiring my practice of integrating clinical herbalism and medical astrology.
Judith is the founder of the Academy for Astrological Medicine and an award-winning author of fourteen books, including her latest, The Twelve Zodiac Sign Syndromes of Medical Astrology: Expanding Our View of the Seasonal Wheel. She produces The Renaissance Medicine Conference and has created many well-known astrology courses.
If you've ever been curious about how astrology intersects with medicine or questioned its efficacy, this interview is for you!
We covered a lot of ground in this conversation, including:
Using astrology as a means for potentizing herbal remedies from harvesting to preparation, to administration
Techniques for working with the Moon
How to talk to skeptics (there are many people who "don't believe in astrology!")
The classification of plants astrologically, the issues we inherited from the ancients, and how we can modernize astrological medicine
How astrology reflects health patterns across the human being
The interrelationship of physical and psychological health conditions
Practical ways doctors and practitioners can integrate astrology into their modern clinical practices
Timing interventions, choosing remedies, and patient-practitioner compatibility using astrology
Real-life case studies demonstrating astrology uncovering hidden causes of illness
The intuitive and mechanical insights astrology provides for modern healthcare

In honor of Valentine's Day, celebrated as a day of love and friendship, we're focusing on Venus. Venus is the planet associated with archetypes of love, beauty, and relationships. Valentine's Day is often seen as being for lovers, but let's broaden the Venus archetype to include reflecting on the beauty in your life and the love you have for everyone in it. In this episode, we explore Venus in excess and deficiency through the lens of medical astrology and herbalism, examining how this archetype shapes the kidneys, reproductive system, circulation, relationships, and the deeper work of balance and self-understanding.
Here's what you'll learn about:
How Venus patterns show up physically: urinary and reproductive manifestations of Venus excess and deficiency
The tissue states behind these patterns (lax/leaky vs. dry/tense/depleted)
Herbs used to balance Venus patterns β from urinary tract remedies to reproductive support strategies
How excess/deficiency works as a spectrum (not a binary) in both astrology and clinical herbalism
The VenusβMars polarity and why Venus issues often involve Mars dynamics
The AriesβLibra axis as a map of self vs. other and how imbalance affects relationships
The TaurusβScorpio axis as a map of values, depth, transformation, and intimacy

Most herbalists begin with books, teachers, and tradition, but genuine clinical mastery comes from organizing what you know into something you can actually use.
In this episode, we will look at why the clinical herbal monograph is the most powerful tool for studying medicinal plants and how to build one that supports real-world practice rather than just theory.
Here's what you'll learn:What defines a clinical herbal monograph
The essential elements every useful monograph should include
How to think in terms of patterns, rather than "good for" lists
Which information is helpful β and what only creates clutter
Why writing your own monographs helps you to learn herbs deeply
