On this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we’re thrilled to sit down with James Broadbent, an adventure elopement and portrait photographer who’s as passionate about scaling mountains for the perfect shot as he is about solving photographers' biggest headaches. Not only does James capture breathtaking love stories in the great outdoors, but he’s also the mastermind behind Narrative, an AI-powered software designed to simplify photo culling, editing, and publishing.
In our conversation, James shares his journey from shooting adventurous elopements in New Zealand and around the world to tackling the not-so-glamorous side of photography: managing endless files, sorting through thousands of images, and trying to keep up with demanding workflows. That’s where Narrative comes in—born out of every photographer's frustrations, it’s now a tool empowering photographers to spend less time behind a screen and more time doing what they love.
We also dive into the creative freedom that comes with elopement photography, the unique challenges of blending art with tech, and James’s vision for the future of photography tools. Whether you’re an adventurer at heart or someone who dreams of faster workflows, this episode is packed with inspiration and innovation.

In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we’re tackling a hot topic in the photography world: is gear really as important as everyone makes it out to be? Spoiler alert: not really. Sure, having nice equipment is great, but it’s far from the be-all and end-all of great photography. To be clear, that includes what camera brand you choose to work with as well!
We’ve all seen it happen—a photographer shows up to a shoot with a top-of-the-line camera, fancy lenses, and every gadget imaginable, only to produce images that… well… don’t exactly wow anyone. That’s because, at the end of the day, it’s the person behind the camera that makes the magic happen, not the equipment.
In this episode, we dig into why technique, creativity, and vision will always be more important than the gear you’re using. So, if you’ve been putting off projects because you’re waiting for that next big gear upgrade, this episode is for you. Grab your camera (whatever it may be) and get ready to be inspired!

Hello, my lovely Nerdy Photo Crew! In this inspiring and reflective episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, we discuss how photography can be a powerful tool for increasing mindfulness and being present in the moment.
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, often missing out on the beauty of the present moment. Our guests explore how photography can help us slow down, focus, and truly appreciate our surroundings. By looking through the lens, we can learn to see the world with fresh eyes and capture the fleeting moments that often go unnoticed.
The Art of Being PresentOne of the key takeaways from our conversation is the importance of being present. When you're behind the camera, you're not just taking pictures; you're actively observing and engaging with the world around you. This heightened state of awareness helps you notice details, light, and compositions that you might otherwise overlook. Photography encourages you to live in the moment and savor the experience, creating a deeper connection with your environment.
Practical Tips for Mindful PhotographyOur experts shared some fantastic tips on how to incorporate mindfulness into your photography practice:
Slow Down: Take your time to really see and appreciate your subject before clicking the shutter. This mindful approach can lead to more thoughtful and impactful images. Engage Your Senses: Pay attention to the sights, sounds, smells, and even textures around you. Let your sensory experiences guide your creativity and help you connect with your subject on a deeper level. Set Intentions: Before you start shooting, set an intention for your photography session. Whether it's to capture a specific emotion, explore a new perspective, or simply enjoy the process, having a clear intention can enhance your mindfulness. Embrace Imperfection: Mindful photography is not about perfection. It's about the journey and the experience. Allow yourself to experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them without judgment. Mindfulness Beyond the CameraThe benefits of mindful photography extend beyond the moments spent behind the lens. By practicing mindfulness through photography, you can develop habits that carry over into other areas of your life. You'll find yourself more attuned to the present, more appreciative of everyday moments, and more resilient in the face of stress and distractions.
