Mishlei 15:21 - Mishleic Heartlessness, Understanding, and Happiness (Part 2)
Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/6/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's approaches, but instead of returning to Metzudas David and Rabbeinu Yonah, we developed an approach I came up with based on Ralbag and Hoil Moshe. After that, we developed another original approach, then learned the Malbim's explanation and concluded with the Meiri. This ended up being a REALLY insightful pasuk with many real-world applications!

Mishlei 16:25 - How to Avoid the Paths of Death ... Again?!
Length: 1 hour 20 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/3/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that seems really obvious AND which I've taught many times in my high school Mishlei classes. For these reasons, I was worried we wouldn't come up with any chidushim (new insights) tonight. My worries were compounded when I realized that this exact same pasuk showed up two chapters earlier, and I gave shiur on it on 12/24/23! Thankfully, we came up with some really nice ideas AND reviewed the old ones!

Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/27/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing what we covered yesterday. Then we learned through the commentaries of Metzudas David, R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak, and Rabbeinu Yonah. We came up with some really nice practical ideas, several of which exemplified Mishlei's unique approach for dealing with counterproductive emotions.

Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/26/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began a NEW section in Mishlei (at least, according to R' Sheishes ben Yitzchak). This pasuk bears a striking resemblance to the introductory pasuk of "Mishlei proper," in 10:1. We came up with some nice ideas of our own and read Metzudas David's commentary. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll attempt to define Metzudas David's idea, then see what the other meforshim have to say.

Mishlei 15:19 - The Thorn Fenced Way of the Mishleically Lazy (Part 2)
Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/20/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began with a quick review and refinement of what we covered yesterday. After a few additional ideas from the group, we delved into the meforshim and we were rewarded not only with excellent ideas about our pasuk, but huge methodological insights for how to approach Mishlei as a sefer, thanks to R' Sheshes. I went into this pasuk hoping for chidushim in Mishleic laziness, and we got plenty of that and more!

Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/19/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we revisited one of the most important Mishleic archetypes: the atzel (lazy person). After encountering a surprising degree of difficulty in reading and translating the pasuk, we reviewed Saadia Gaon's definition of Mishleic laziness and discussed its implications. We only had time to venture one interpretation of our pasuk before we had to end shiur. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll see what the meforshim have to say.

Mishlei 15:18 - To Stoke or Silence Strife (Part 2)
Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/13/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we had a different kind of "Mishlei Part 2" shiur than we usually do. I was bothered yesterday by the lack of specificity in our approaches. My Mishleic intuition told me that we were hovering around the general topic, but hadn't yet discovered the chidush (novel insight). We engaged in a VERY in-depth review of what we covered and ended up hitting a goldmine of insight into the nature of interpersonal conflict. While I'm still not sure whether we ended up with a complete explanation of the pasuk itself, that's almost unimportant to me. I feel like we really leveled up in our understanding of this (unfortunately) important topic, and I'm already eager for the next pasuk about strife, whenever that may be!

Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/12/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing a new pasuk on what appears to be a new topic. We quickly encountered the challenge that crops up in Mishlei quite often: a seemingly obvious statement about an exceedingly broad topic. While it was relatively easy to come up with insights about the relevant phenomena, we had difficulty pinning down the scope of the topic in our pasuk, or even the decision-making scenario. We'll attempt again tomorrow with the help of the meforshim (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:24 - Chochmah as Honeycomb
Length: 1 hour 9 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (2/10/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk featuring a curious metaphor. I was actually surprised by how quickly the idea flowed tonight. We came up with a couple of approaches on our own and learned a few from the meforshim. Many of the practical applications we discussed pertained to pedagogy. Next time, it appears we'll be moving on to an entirely new topic. Hope to see you then!

Mishlei 15:17 - Salad with Love vs. Hate-filled Bull (Part 2)
Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/6/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing wand refining what we covered yesterday. We then spent the rest of the time learning the several explanations given by the Meiri - some of which were nigleh and some of which were nistar. We didn't fully develop all the ideas, but we learned enough to make them actionable. Juicy ideas, as always! Felt like more than a humble salad.

Mishlei 15:17 - Salad with Love vs. Hate-filled Bull (Part 1)
Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (2/5/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we started learning a pasuk which compares two meal scenarios (reminiscent of Mishlei 17:1, one of my favorite "starter pesukim"). We developed a few approaches which focused on enjoyment and a couple more that focused on objective good. Tomorrow we'll see what the meforshim have to say (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:23 - The Mind-Mouth Positive Feedback Loop
Length: 1 hour 9 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (2/3/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which seemed almost exactly like the one we learned two weeks ago. Much to our delight, we came up with six ideas - three of our own and three from the meforshim! Lots of practical applications all around, all of which have to do with learning and teaching.

Mishlei 15:16 - Financial Standing and Fear of Hashem (Part 2)
Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/30/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's ideas and comparing them with meforshim who took similar approaches. I'm glad we spent a good deal of time discussing practical applications. At the very end, we speculated on what the Meiri might say for his derech nistar, and then we read what he actually said. Great pasuk, especially if you're planning on trying to get rich!

Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/29/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which clearly has SOMETHING to do with the relationship between yiras Hashem and wealth. Figuring out what it's talking about and what it's teaching us was a bit trickier. We came up with 2-3 approaches, and (בג"ה) we'll delve into the meforshim tomorrow.

Mishlei 16:22 - How Fools Relate to the Fountainhead of Life
Length: 1 hour 23 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (1/27/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a surprisingly difficult pasuk about what seems to be the bread and butter of Mishlei: how fools relate to intelligence and mussar. We came up with three approaches on our own, then learned Rabbeinu Yonah's (after not getting anywhere with Metzudas David). The pasuk ended up being relevant to everyone in more ways than usual, and left us with a useful metaphor which can help apply this idea to our lives.

Mishlei 15:15 - How to Party Constantly (Part 2)
Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/16/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed the approaches we came up with yesterday, developed one more approach, then got to work on the meforshim. We explored two out of the three "camps": one which held that our pasuk was about sameach b'chelko, and the other which held that it was about wealth and poverty of knowledge. Although our focus was more on a bekius overview of these ideas than our usual iyun, we still came away with some valuable, practical insights.

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/15/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk which, on its surface, seems to provide a strategy for how to experience life as a perpetual party. What this means, how to do it, and why Mishlei is telling us this is a more complicated story. We started coming up with some approaches today, but we're anticipating a flood of good ideas from the meforshim tomorrow (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:21 - How to Become a Navon
Length: 1 hour 22 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (1/13/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that was both syntactically awkward and somewhat of a non sequitur. Despite only having a few people in shiur, we managed to come up with some nice approaches. The real shock came when we realized that all three of the "go to" meforshim we learned ended up on the same page with the same takeaway lesson, which is a rarity! I'd tell you what I'm most happy about with this idea, but that would be a spoiler (unless you regard the entire shiur as a spoiler)!

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/9/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing the excellent approaches people came up with yesterday, supplying examples which clarified and refined them. We then did a full analysis of Metzudas David, a partial analysis of Rabbeinu Yonah, and a tantalizing read-through of Malbim's. It was a great pasuk with an interesting type of common theme, despite the different ways of reading and translating the pasuk!
