Mishlei 15:7 - The Lips of the Wise vs. the Heart of Fools (Part 2)
Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/7/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed and refined yesterday's approaches, which translated יזרו as "spread" or "scatter." Today we focused on two other translations: "winnow" and "crown." Not only did we come up with some nice ideas, but we unwittingly stumbled upon a Grand Theory of how Mishlei uses terms for speech (e.g. lips, mouth, tongue, etc.). I'm happy with the ideas we learned from this pasuk, but even happier about that Grand Theory!

Mishlei 15:7 - The Lips of the Wise vs. the Heart of Fools (Part 1)
Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (11/6/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a "classic" sounding Mishlei pasuk about chachamim, ksilim, speech, and knowledge. The pasuk proved to be surprisingly rich in questions and we developed three approaches based on one of the two translations. Tomorrow, we'll see if we come up with our own approaches based on the other translation, and then we'll delve into the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:13 - The Kind of Speaker (that Should Be) Favored by Kings
Length: 1 hour 20 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (11/4/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned another pasuk about kings. I was a little worried because so many of our go-to meforshim had such little to say, but we ended up developing some nice approaches on our own and we learned a few from the meforshim. Despite being about kings, all the ideas we came up with were widely applicable to our daily lives.

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (10/31/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing, clarifying, and developing some of the approaches we took yesterday. We then learned three new approaches from the meforshim: R' Sheshes ben Yitzchak Gerondi (our newly published friend!), Rabbeinu Yonah, and the Meiri's derech nistar. Great yield, as usual!

Length: 46 minutes

Length: 1 hour 29 minutes

We tackled it anyway, hoping we'd be rewarded with a timely idea for Aseres Ymei Teshuvah, and we ended up working out THREE such ideas, plus a couple from the meforshim. Mishlei 16:10 - The Charm on the King's Lips
Length: 1 hour 37 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/30/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up a VERY strange pasuk. It was difficult to translate, difficult to contextualize, but we managed to come up with some really nice approaches and learn a few of them from the meforshim as well! Sadly, we didn't end up getting an idea about Rosh ha'Shanah, which was a possibility in my mind, but the ideas were nice and surprisingly far-ranging in their application.

Mishlei 15:4 - How Speech Can Vitalize or Break a Spirit (Part 2)
Length: 48 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/26/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing and refining what we came up with yesterday. We then learned a completely different approach from Rabbeinu Yonah, another approach from Ibn Ezra, and a radically different approach from the Malbim. This pasuk really exemplified how different readings of the pasuk result in completely different realms of practical application.

Mishlei 15:4 - How Speech Can Vitalize or Break a Spirit (Part 1)
Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/25/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing an enigmatic riddle-of-a-pasuk. I was pleasantly surprised that we came up with two nice ideas, corresponding to two ways of reading the pasuk, and we ended off with a theory about Metzudas David's approach. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll see what the other meforshim have to say.

Mishlei 16:9 - Man Plans and Hashem ... Prepares Footsteps?
Length: 1 hour 39 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/23/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we ended up having a masterclass on how to avoid learning cliché ideas from pesukim that seem like clichés. I was concerned this might happen, especially since this is the third pasuk in this chapter we've encountered along these lines, but we managed to develop several nuanced ideas and subtle Mishleic techniques. The meforshim helped us even more! If you listen to this one, I REALLY encourage you to pause the recording before we start giving answers and see what you come up with on your own.

Mishlei 15:3 - Hashem's Super-Vision (Part 2)
Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/19/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by raising a problem we missed yesterday which many of the meforshim grapple with. I shared my own approach to the pasuk in response to that problem, then we learned the (fake?) Radak, Ralbag, and Malbim, all of whom take their own approaches to this problem. We came away with some nice ideas, despite our ongoing uncertainty about how hashgachas Hashem works.

Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/18/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a pasuk which sounds VERY non-Mishleic, and seems to be more fitting for Tehilim, Koheles, or Iyov. We came up with far more questions than I thought - including one based on a Christmas carol - and explored a variety of approaches. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll take stock of what we came up with, then delve into the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:8 - The Superiority of Small-Scale Tzedakah
Length: 1 hour 39 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/16/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we took up concise pasuk about tzedakah and mishpat - and boy did we come up with interpretations: thirteen in all! There was some overlap in some of these explanations, but they all had unique angles or applications. And we only looked at one of the meforshim! I guess we ended up with abundant produce after all!

Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This past Friday morning (9/14/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur (which I forgot to post until now), we refined our analysis of the pasuk from the day before, developing three categories of approaches, each with several variants, and each useful in its own way. I honestly don't remember much of what we covered, so if you happen to listen to the shiur and can tell me what sources I quoted, I'd appreciate it!

Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/12/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began analyzing a "classic" style Mishlei pasuk about the wise, the foolish, and their respective types of speech. The difficulty of such pesukim is to discover the non-obvious, non-cliche ideas therein. We ended up getting a LOT of possibilities onto the table. Tomorrow (בג"הw), we'll refine today's findings under the guidance of the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:7 - How to Recruit Hashem to Make Your Enemies Be At Peace With You
Length: 1 hour 33 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (9/9/24), in our first Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we took up a Mishlei pasuk about how to make peace with our enemies. The overarching questions are "What are the parameters of this pasuk?" or, to put it more bluntly, "Under what circumstances is this true?" We ended up with some nice insights into decision-making and some useful strategies for navigating potentially contentious relationships in life. We even learned a nice "derech nistar" (esoteric) idea about how to govern our inner lives!
Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!

Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (9/5/24), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed what we did yesterday and developed a unified approach based on Metzudas David and Aristotle. We emerged with a VERY practical idea for how to respond when someone is angry at you, regardless of why or whether that anger is justified. We also discussed some nice Mishlei methodology along the way.
