  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, we are blessed with the presence of NY Times bestselling author, chef, TV personality, and entrepreneur Cristina Ferrare!

Cristina’s most recent book, Food For Thought: Recipes for Ultimate Mind and Body Health was inspired by her mother. Cristina discovered that certain foods looked like body parts that were actually good for those body parts! After extensive research and working with a nutritionist, she began writing a cookbook on how food affects the brain and other parts of the body. Cristina wants you to eat happy and healthy!

She also shares with us her time at Home and Family and how that immediate exit was just one chapter of many in her journey. “Life is full of chapters” and Cristina has learned plenty of patience and faith along the way. With the support of her daughters and husband, she’s embracing change and living at peace.

Currently 6 years in remission, Cristina has made it a point to remove all the BS in her life in order to live and love fully. Life can change in a moment, so it only makes sense to live in your most authentic way.

“Heal your body, protect your mind, and enrich your life.”

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, we’re stepping into the fashion scene with Zac Posen, the internationally renowned fashion designer and author of Cooking with Zac: Recipes From Rustic to Refined: A Cookbook.

Starting at the age of 4 years old, Zac started designing in sketchbooks and was constantly influenced by the world around him. His father’s oil paintings were even inspirational with their fabric details. What a childhood that must’ve been!

Zac also recollects his first design with fashion icon, Naomi Campbell. After seeing his work out in the wild, she reached out to collaborate. And before you know it, they were bonding creating something incredible.

He loves, loves, LOVES designing dresses for those close to his heart. These special projects take on a very intimate labor of love for Zac. They are just as special and significant to him as they are for his clients. As he mentions, “you gotta love what you do. Being a designer is a lifetime investment.”

Zac doesn’t know what the future holds for him yet, but he’s hoping that sustainability will play a larger role in the fashion industry. As the world changes, it’s important to start focussing on reducing excess waste and searching for more accessible, sustainable materials. He wants those timeless pieces AND to save the environment, too!

Be sure to follow Zac on Instagram (@zacposen) and Twitter (@zac_posen). And even just Googling “Zac Posen designs” is a great rabbit hole to go down too!

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins. On this episode of the LoDown, we get to enjoy the ever so thoughtful Travis Van Winkle. Some of you may know him from season 3 of Netflix’s You as Cary Conrad or even as Danny Green from The Last Ship.

We take a dive into learning more about Travis’s career and how he went from a 20 year old model for Ambercrombie & Fitch to acting in movies and television alongside fellow peers such as Justin Long and Penn Bagdley. I mean, the man was made for the screen!

No one can deny that Travis is a total heartthrob, but did you know that he’s all about the Baháʼí Faith? Well, Travis takes us on a philosophical journey through his discovery of the enlightening religion. He talks about how he found a community that inspires him and focuses on giving back to others.

Which brings us to another amazing fact about Travis: He’s a global ambassador for Build On, a non-profit organization that builds schools in developing countries.

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois leaves no stone unturned in her interview with Julia Haart, the author of Brazen: My Unorthodox Journey from Long Sleeves to Lingerie.

If you haven’t seen Julia in her Netflix show, My Unorthodox Life, where have you been?? Julia blesses us with the experience of what it was like to leave an extremist religious background and start a new life as an independent woman.

She opens up about her childhood (or lack thereof) and about raising all of her siblings until she got married at 19. She even mentions one of the naughtiest things she did as a kid and it’s not what you’d think!

Even though married life was no walk in the park, she still found joy in her children. They truly give her the strength to keep fighting for freedom and achieving her dreams.

Julia is and always will be a fighter and that’s just one of the many reasons why we love her! We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did and don’t forget to check out her book!

  • Welcome to the LoDown: a podcast, hosted by Lois Robbins, exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the talented and fierce Wendi McLendon-Covey, who just so happens to be joining from the comfort of her closet floor.

Wendi reflects on 9 seasons worth of raising TV children as the iconic Beverly Goldberg. Even off-screen, she can’t help but check up on them! Wendi’s also so grateful to have some of Beverly’s can do and WILL DO attitude rub off on her in real life.

Lois and Wendi also reminisce on Wendi’s early years at The Groundlings and how she went from having a class with Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy to doing a table read of Bridesmaids.

Wendi also shares some tough love when it comes to auditions. They can smell the desperation from a mile away. So you just need to hide your neediness. Easy, right? Once she changed her mentality about auditions and stopped second guessing herself, it made them that much more enjoyable!

Thanks for listening! To learn more about Wendi McLendon-Covey, follow her social media adventures:

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the multiple Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress, Sharon Gless! Generations of fans know her from her iconic roles such as Christine Cagney (Cagney & Lacey), Rosie O’Neill (The Trials of Rosie O’Neill), Debbie Novotny (Queer As Folk) and Madeline Westen (Burn Notice), among many others.

Without giving too much away from her book, Apparently There Were Complaints, Sharon talks about some of the most memorable moments from her career. Even though it took her 7 years to write it, the juicy stories inside were well worth the wait.

Sharon also discusses the journey of her Cagney & Lacey character’s alcoholism and how there were times her acting was a little too convincing for the media. She opens up about the realities of her personal struggles with alcoholism and how she’s an even stronger person because of it.

Lois and Sharon also reminisce about the groundbreaking show, Queer As Folk. At a time when the LGBTQIA+ was scarcely represented, Sharon was so grateful to be part of a show that supported the gay and queer community. She never forgot all the fan letters thanking her for giving them the support they needed.

Sharon is a firecracker gal with an incredibly big heart. This episode is definitely one for the books!

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the hilarious Beth Hall!

Beth recently played Wendy Harris on CBS’ sitcom, Mom. She has a knack for playing captivating roles in television. Her catalog includes short stints on Murphy Brown, Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Parks and Recreation. She played a recurring character in Mad Men and, if you haven’t watched her in that. Well, you should.

On the show, Beth shares her love for working on Mom - the cast and writing. She really appreciated a space where a major sitcom can handle difficult subjects and still stay funny. Those are truly special gems!

Lois and Beth also discuss the ebb and flow of being a mom in the industry. Beth opens up about her adoption journey and raising a kid in quarantine. Shoutout to all the parents who survived quarantine with their kids.

Also, ageism towards women in Hollywood is still on the top of Lois and Beth’s minds. While Mom had a great group of “advanced” women, the instrustry still has a lot of work to do to show that representation of older actresses.

We’re hoping to see Beth star in her own sitcom in the near future!

  • On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the infinitely beautiful and unmistakably badass Marisol Nichols.

Lois kick things off asking Marisol about her experience acting alongside Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in Spiral before reminiscing about Beverly Hills 90210 and remembering Luke Perry.

The two recount her experiences playing Nadia Yassir, a counter-terrorist agent in the smash hit 24, and Victoria Santiago in Resurrection Blvd. - a role she delighted in because her character “had balls!”

Lois and Marisol take listener questions (some are really really good!) and share a bit of nutrition talk before getting into the deeper parts of Marisol’s life - how being a mom has changed her as an actress and ignited a drive to challenge preconceived notions about parenthood.

But, what’s most fierce about Marisol is her courage to put herself - her life - in harms way to combat sexual abuse. Marisol shares with Lois how she became an undercover sex-trafficking agent and, in a vieled-but-honest way, illustrates the threats and scenes she witnesses doing this type of work.

Marisol’s story will be the subject of a TV series that she’s starring in and executive producing.

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with D.B. Woodside who, despite having a beautiful radio voice, is not a voice actor! D.B. was born in Queens, N.Y. Growing up there meant he was at the center of one of the most diverse places in the world.

Lois and D.B. kick things off with some history behind his name and his journey into acting. We find out just how curious D.B. was at a young age and how impressive his attitude was towards adversity.

D.B. attended Yale School of Drama and he shares what that experience was like and how his education prepared him for a career as an actor, and not just a job acting. The two discuss this difference in-depth and in a way, it’s the nugget of wisdom D.B. holds closest and shares most liberally with young actors.

D.B. shares how he got his start in acting and how he eventually pivoted into directing and writing. Not only that, he can sing and dance #triplethreat! We also hear about his experiences acting in Lucifer, Suits, and The Temptations, how he rehearses his material, and what might be on the horizon for an actor’s actor.

But, maybe what’s most poignant about D.B. is listening to his sense of collectivity and camaraderie between artists all working on the same project.

This interview is best served with a stiff glass of Bourbon or a chilled glass of Rosé and, of course, a plate of pasta with marinara!

    We hope you enjoy!

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, we travel the path of sensitivity and awareness with the quietly strong Jason Scott Lee.

Born in Los Angeles, but raised in Hawaii, Jason’s story spins like a sage’s tale of growth and wisdom that we tap right at the beginning of this episode.

Lois and Jason start at the beginning: a distinctly different childhood in Hawaii, then Fullerton Community College in California in the 1980s.

It wasn’t long until Jason started landing small roles in some 80’s classics: Matlock, The A-Team, and Back to the Future II. By the 90’s, he had established himself both as a martial arts actor and an endearing performer with his portrayal of Bruce Lee in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and as the heartfelt and skillful Mowgli in Disney’s first live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book.

And then, Jason stepped away from acting all together and returned to Hawaii to build a homestead on 25 acres with no electricity. After studying the life of one of the greatest martial artists of all time, Jason sought something else.

Lois and Jason explore the journey he took to seek a life with more sensitivity and awareness, the transformation that journey created, and how living in the boonies was welcomed lifestyle change both before and after COVID.

We’ll hear about Jason’s return to acting, including the challenge he faced taking on his first ever evil role and the joys he has shooting his new project, Doogie Kamealoha, M.D., in his backyard - yes, that 25-acre back yard in Hawaii.

It’s a jam-packed conversation that will make you want to plant some flowers or book a farm for your next vacation (you’ll understand soon enough).

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, we settle into a matinee show.

Put down your work, set aside your unfolded laundry, close your briefcase.

Make yourself an afternoon cocktail and sink into this lovely conversation with the extraordinary theater director, Karen Carpenter. For decades, Karen’s creative mind and personable touch has turned scripted words into immersive on-stage experiences for actors to relish in.

Lois and Karen immediately dive into the fascinating and ever-challenging role of directing theater, exploring the value of using a stage to help change the world. Karen shares her experience bringing projects to life for audiences and actors across the world. Projects like Period Piece, an anthology dedicated to destigmatizing menstruation, and Nora & Delia Ephron’s adaptation of Love, Loss, and What I Wore.

The two discuss the strengths and shortcomings of rehearsing theater over Zoom during the pandemic, the power of empathy and the courage it takes to step away from work you love in order to take a job that could change your life. Be sure to stay tuned for Karen’s advice for people who are just starting out, plus a salad recipe to blow your mind.

For many of us, the theater has seemed like a distant place these past two years. But, we hold onto hope. It won’t be long before the stage comes alive again. We believe that a renaissance of theater is possible in the near future, locally, in smaller theaters across the world. May this interview keep the fire going for all of you who can’t wait to get back into your seats or onto the stage

    Bravo!

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with Brooke Shields. Yes, Brooke Shields!

We are with you on the double take.

Brooke has been an icon for generations of people. For some, it was her childhood years on the screen in Endless Love and Blue Lagoon. For others, it was her indelible role as Susan on Suddenly Susan or even her memorable roles in That ‘70s Show or Hannah Montana. No matter where you’ve seen her, you know just how versatile she is as a performer… especially if you’re lucky enough to see her perform on stage.

But, she is also a world class human being and mother.

Brooke has grown her career into so many different facets, that it’s kinda become her motto. When asked what her headline would be, she responded “Keep Going” without missing a beat.

Lois and Brooke tackle so much in this episode. They dive into Brooke’s early experiences finding and developing her humor and the very real value in talking about sexuality and postpartum depression. They explore what makes a career strong and resilient and the value of good work ethic. Plus, we hear about Brooke’s latest film, A Castle for Christmas, and her new brand, “Beginning is Now.

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins.

On this episode of the LoDown, we hit the time machine and travel back a few decades to a time when two actors met and began a friendship.

Lois is joined by her long-time friend, Corbin Bernsen and my-oh-my do they cover some ground.

For starters, you might remember Corbin from his early years on NBC’s “LA Law” where he played Arnie Becker on the show that virtually created the ensemble drama as we know today. Or maybe you know him as Henry Spencer from USA’s hit series “PSYCH.”

But the conversation doesn’t stay on acting. Between exploring the trials and joys of building a healthy career and the value of good story and character development, Lois and Corbin travel into deeper themes: family commitment, the unspoken gratitude parents and children share, and some keys to a happy relationship.

To top it off, it’s entirely wrapped in laughter and devilish humor and some anecdotes of George Clooney and Richard Downey Jr. to boot!

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry and hosted by Lois Robbins. How many of us got through the deepest, darkest moments of the quarantine with the help of Schitt’s Creek? The characters and stories were the perfect comic relief and warm-hearted fun for the months-long period many of us experienced (often accompanied by solitude and contemplation). On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with the beloved Karen Robinson. Many of us met Karen in this darling television series playing the role of Ronnie Lee - the no-bullsh*t, straight talking contractor and city councilwoman.

Between conversations about swimming with whales and singing “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” Lois and Karen get right into it. We learn about the toughest theater role Karen has ever played: The Love Boat (a prequel to Othello). We also hear Karen share one of her greatest professional challenges and, of course, we hear about the joys she experienced playing Ronnie Lee in Schitt’s Creek.

The conversation doesn’t stop there and it’s filled with deep-hearted laughs, the deliciousness of oxtail stew, and how to approach life with love and not fear.

Hailed by? Yes, hailed by none other than Halle Berry.

  • Welcome to the LoDown, a podcast exploring the voices in and outside the entertainment industry. Hosted by Lois Robbins. On this episode of the LoDown, Lois speaks with… well… none other than Fran Drescher! Yes, the dynamo we all came to love back in 1993 when she starred in the CBS hit sitcom, The Nanny.

Fran began acting back in the seventies in movies like Saturday Night Fever - “So, are you as good in bed as you are on the dance floor?” - American Hot Wax and Summer of Fear. Since then, her resume is endlessly studded with film, television, stage, and voice acting gems that one can’t help falling in love with.

But Fran Drescher came up in Queens, NY. She is so much more than an actress.

She’s been a bright and inspiring role model - both in her fight against cancer and as U.S. Envoy for Women’s Health Issues for the State Department. She even had a hand in passing federal legislation to raise awareness of gynecologic cancer.

Lois and Fran get right down to brass tacks about everything from processing grief to making each other laugh.

We get our dose of “Neu Yawk” grit and then some. It’s a hoot.
