In this episode Marion seems to have mastered teaching in Millville but is still unimpressed with the town. She’s showing some entrepreneurship her father would be proud of—but I think it just indicates how poorly teachers are paid. Some things never change.
Her social life isn’t suffering though.

In this episode John voices his concern about the mail. I’ve been so impressed with the mail delivery in the early part of the 20th Century. Sometimes the mail from Earlville arriving overnight or even the same day. It’s certainly one area of life in which technology hasn’t improved service. John also notes his concern that Sue is being overworked by requests for sewing from her daughters.

In this episode John is travelling to Bath, New York. He finds it one of the nicest towns in New York and is especially impressed with the Presbyterian church. John makes a point of commenting on his clothes as he has done before with Sue. I get the idea he was something of a dashing guy for his time.

In this episode we will transcribe three letters home to Sue from John. He has his usual complaints, loneliness and a lack of business. He still isn’t aware he’s in the middle of an economic depression. These letters seem to have a rhythm now and sometimes it’s hard to tell one form the other. However there are always a few surprises.

In this episode we again hear from Betty, close to the end of the first year in college. This time she’s writing to her older sister, Marion, not home to mother. Her letter seems more vibrant, and filled with more details--just as today an email between sisters might be more intimate than one from a daughter to her mother or father.

In this episode John writes a short letter home. I selected this letter as John seems to be moving up in the world. He’s travelling by car. If you’ve been reading along, you know John travels hundreds of miles each week and until now, has done so by private car hire, grabbing a ride with a colleague or, mostly by train. Upstate New York clearly had an outstanding train system in the 1920’s that allowed John to get from town to town with relative ease.
