Meet Jenny and Pavle Stojkovic, a power couple determined to shape the future of food with an arc towards justice and compassion. As you'll hear, Jenny and Pavle's story is marked with unimaginable tragedy--the kind that inevitably changes people, whether they like it or not. Whether you're vegan, plant-based, or a hamburger eating carnivore, I guarantee you, this episode is one you're going to want and NEED to buckle up for--we go from tragedy to clarity to activism to the future of not just food, but everyone who eats it. As is always the case on Are You Ready, we cover a LOT of ground, get deep, and take a good long look at some challenging issues.

“My knees began to smart and I started to feel “something” in my right hip-flexor–something that reminded me of those cartoons where Elmer Fudd tries to drive a car that literally falls apart with the wheels rolling away and the engine banging out with a “poof.”
Joanne recaps her awesome NYC Marathon experience, complete with the weekend nutrition that fueled her race: boiled potatoes, NYC bagels, pizza, ramyeon, and her favorite NYC restaurant. Plus, a nightmarish parting thought…

"As my brother learned the hard way when he once used the word 'negligee' instead of 'negligent,' it's probably a good idea to know exactly what a word means before you use it."
In this week’s episode, Joanne takes a deep dive into the meaning and etymology of words that might require some clarity, at least as they relate to the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.

"[Loneliness] is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death. The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and even greater than that associated with obesity and physical inactivity." -U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory (2023).
This week, Joanne tackles the subject of loneliness and wonders whether she can "fake out" the nation's current epidemic in the same way she tried to outsmart her imposter syndrome.

"You need to create a 'Joanne 2.0,' a Joanne that pretends that she knows she deserves to be there as much as everyone else."
I imagined donning the guise of a totally "new" Joanne--one who was confident, made people laugh, strode into rooms with her shoulders back and her gaze straight. Only, it wouldn't really be a "new" me so much as a "fake" me, like a character in a sitcom.
While looking to trick herself out of her own Imposter Syndrome during a recent trip to NYC, Joanne discovers the true meaning of confidence.

Meet Cassey Ho, the founder and creator of not one, but two powerhouse fitness brands: Blogilates and PopFlex, both of which were born out of Cassey’s stint as a certified pilates instructor back in the late 2000s. Discover how what started out as a way to pay the bills, soon turned into a community numbering in the tens of millions, and now, two 8 figure businesses.
Cassey was born a leader, but the thing I love about her is that she completely upends the stereotype that often adheres to women in a position of power. That we must be unapproachable, aloof, even a bit of a bully, and that it is a business no-no to wear our hearts on our sleeves. This was definitely the message I received—explicitly and implicitly—when I was trying to make partner at the Firm. But Cassey doesn’t buy into that—at all. She is openly emotional, about the triumphs and the losses, and she has leaned into that quality without a trace of artifice. In so doing, she has proven that success does NOT require you to be who you aren’t. Success will follow those who lead, even with their hearts. - Joanne

Meet Dr. Robynne Chutkan, one of the country’s most recognizable gastroenterologists and the veritable Queen of Gut! The author of four books on the microbiome (including my personal favorite--The Microbiome Solution), Dr. Chutkan is a graduate of Yale and Columbia College, has served on the faculty at Georgetown Hospital since 1997, and was once short-listed as a candidate for the U.S. Surgeon General's office. Dr Chutkan’s philosophy is based on uncovering and remediating the root cause of digestive distress, which is often the result of damage to the microbiome from excessive antibiotics, acid blockers, immunosuppressive drugs, and a suboptimal diet. Her work has had an immense impact on my life and it's an absolute thrill to share this highly informative conversation with all of you.
Enter to win a copy of Dr. Chutkan's The Microbiome Solution and The Anti-Viral Gut. Plus, this week's Recipe Inspo, Parting Thoughts from Sunday night's Streamy Awards, and What I'm... (Watching, Reading, Using).

"You tell yourself that tomorrow, or on Monday, or after the guests staying at your house leave, you will resume all those healthy habits that you thought you couldn't live without; but tomorrow, Monday, and your family's departure are no longer visible in the rearview mirror, and still, your blender remains forlorn, your kale now yellow, the cover of that little brown notebook untouched."
If you've ever found yourself in a slump, today's episode is for you! Joanne discusses getting back on track while establishing (or re-establishing) good habits. Plus, "Parting Thoughts."

"I counted the stones stacked together like rows and rows of broken teeth that encased us inside a cavernous mouth, wondering how many secrets they could tell if one decided to crack them open. How many loves and not-quite-loves had they witnessed? How often had they correctly predicted the outcome of the unions cemented inside a building that had truly tested the definition of "forever"? As I stood there waiting to become a wife, I decided to tell them my own secret, a story I hadn't yet shared with anyone--not even Anthony."
Back in Rome, Joanne reflects on her wedding day nearly five years ago, and dreams of a second home in Italy.
