  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

Last weekend I hosted some of our clients for our last Incubator Mastermind retreat of the year, and during those retreats I always start our first session by sharing a variety of lessons and thoughts on business ownership, which as you can imagine comes from my own experience running a business and the lessons I have learned along this journey. One of the lessons I shared was about the importance of building a business that reflects what we want in life and who we are as individuals and business owners, including our own core values and beliefs. With that being said, given the timing with the holidays I thought it would be a good topic to share with you all on today's podcast episode.

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Why we need to build a business that reflects what we want from itWhat would entail to build that business and the impact it have in our livesWhy corporations in veterinary medicine are unable to build this style of business and how that impacts the field of canine rehabilitation How do I see that impacting our field and how rehabpreneurs can benefit from it

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

One of the things I often hear from canine rehabpreneurs is the challenging on managing our time in an efficient and effective way, especially when we are seeing patients while trying to run a business at the same time. Yes, that is a challenge, and it often gets in the way of us doing the things we need to do to help our business grow because we end up getting so ingrained with the day-to-day of what needs to be done, both with patients but also with administrative tasks.

The reality is that our biggest challenge is not the time it takes to complete a certain task, but usually the time it takes for us to get emotionally ready or in the right head space to do so. That is the key concept to understand and the reason why we so often think “I don’t have the time”... we do have the time, but we don’t have the time to get emotionally ready to do so. No else is blessed with more time, and that is both the beauty and the curse of it… we all have the same amount of time in a day or in a week, but it comes down to how we are optimizing our time based on what we need from ourselves and our business, and that is what we will discuss today.

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Why we cannot manage the time and instead need to shift our focus towards optimizing the time that we have available to usHow busy activities are important and need to get done, but do not help drive our business forwardWhat are "high payoff activities" and how we can focus on them to drive business growth and revenueThe importance of "high leverage work" and why in the long run is what will help us build a successful canine rehab business

Most of us are familiar with P.T. Barnum due to movie "The Greatest Showman" with Hugh Jackman, and just from that movie alone there is already so many lessons that we can take away. However, as you start to read and learn more about P.T. Barnum and understand how ahead of his time he was you realize that there is a lot more to him beyond the movie which helps us understand how much of a visionary he truly was. For today's episode we discuss some of those business and marketing lessons there are still super relevant today, even though that all took place 150+ years ago!

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

The importance of us filling a gap in the market and how that applies to canine rehabilitationWhy it is vital that we learn how to stand out from the competition so you can stand out in the market by offering something unique to an audience who has been looking for what you have to offerThe importance of developing our "sales pitch" and learning how to communicate the value that we offer through both conventional and non-conventional waysThe power of marketing and promotion when developing strategies that help you stand out from the competitionWhy we need to start to look at marketing and business with a different perspective than what it has been done in canine rehab as a whole, and the importance of adapting our strategies to both conventional and digital marketing strategies

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

I bet many of us will have goals and aspirations of what we want to achieve in 2025, and a lot of us will get excited for a new year and the premise of a new beginning, but at the same time, we must ask ourselves "what are we doing to plan for that?". If you want 2025 to be different than 2024, then the first step you need to take is review what you have accomplished this year, both from a number and metrics perspective, and reflect back on what went right and why that worked, what went wrong and why it went wrong, what you can learn from it, what stopped you from having a better year….basically, before we look forward we need to look backwards, and then we can start planning as to how we want 2025 to pan out.

With that being said, a goal without a plan is just a wish and at the same time as we make our plans, we also need to some things in mind that I wanted to share with you all today. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

How do we keep momentum going and why our daily actions will lead us towards our goalsWhy we need to be careful with instant gratification, and instead need to set realistic timelines and expectations Why achieving what we want requires a series of continuous, steady, consistent actionsHow generalizations kills clarity and the importance of setting up a game planThe difference between tactical and strategic planning, and how to leverage them to our advantage

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

Over the last few months, I have chatted with many canine rehab therapists who are thinking about opening their own business, some of them are not even finished with their certification yet, and a common question I get is when do I think would be a good time to start working on their business.

To be honest, when starting a business the easy part is creating the LLC, getting the equipment that you need, and make sure you have the basics set up so you can start seeing patients… the hardest part is actually building up the marketing and sales strategies that will be vital for someone to build a successful business, and of course those things don’t happen overnight, and just as important will be for someone to start working on their mindset and personal development which will also shift when we go from being an employee to becoming a business owner.

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

The mindset shift needed once we become entrepreneursSequential vs continuous thinking, and how that affects our success in entrepreneurship When is the right time for you to start working on your business Learning how to cope with failure and how that helps us move forward The importance of finding mentorship, guidance, and a community of like-minded individuals who are coming along this journey with you

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

Last week I asked my business coach why he thought some business owners and entrepreneurs succeed while others don't, and his simple answer was focus and execution. As I thought more about it I realized how much that has affected not just my life and business, but also how I have seen a similar trend through the years with our coaching programs as well. The truth is that it can be so easy for us to get distracted and lose focus, but how do we go about overcoming those distractions so we can build a successful canine rehab business?

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Why we need to be careful about "shiny object syndrome"Why we need to be careful taking advice from someone who has never built or accomplished what we want to accomplishThe trap behind "passive income" and how to approach thatHow a lack of a game plan leads towards us minoring on small things (and what to do about it)The importance of making the main thing the main thing

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

During a recent call I had with our Incubator Mastermind mentees we discuss the concept of embracing our reality so we can turn our pain and challenges into growth opportunities. Personally, I am not a big fan of the whole “no pain, no gain” mentality. I get where it came from and how that is meant to make us want to push harder, but that mentality with entrepreneurs and business owners usually leads towards a mindset of simply working harder and harder rather than focusing on working on the right things, and ultimately this mindset of simply thinking that working harder and harder will get us where we want to be is what often lead towards us getting stuck in a hamster wheel of business ownership where we are just going through the motions.

I wanted to share with you all a couple of takeaways from that call with our mentees, so listen to the full episode as we discuss:

The importance of accepting reality as it is, and not as we wish it to beHow failure to accept our reality will lead towards cloudy judgement and decisionsWhy we need to seek our truth as uncomfortable as that may beHow our pain and challenges reveal our limitations and help expose our own weaknessesTurning our pain and challenges into growth opportunities

If you have been in business long enough then you more than likely have experienced the caseload rollercoaster, which is the ups and downs of having a period of time where your schedule is busy and full followed by another period of time when you don't seem to get as many new patients. Does that sound familiar?

It is one of he most common challenges canine rehab therapists are facing when they seek my help and guidance, and also a huge source of stress and anxiety as business owner as it brings a lot of unpredictability to the business. But what can we do about it?

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

How I overcame the caseload roller coaster back and built a sustainable flow of new patientsThe importance of knowing and understanding the fundamentals of marketing and salesDeveloping strategies and implementing systems that make your marketing and sales as streamlined, predictable, and scaleable as possibleWhy we need to be able to diagnose the real problem within your business

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

As we get near the end of this year and the beginning of a new year, many canine rehab therapists start to wonder and worry about how to go about raising their fees once the new years starts. As we start to have those thoughts we also start to feel anxious and stressed about having to have a money conversation with clients while worrying about what they will think of us. Does that sound familiar?

I used to feel the same way, but over time worked on my money mindset and learned strategies on how to raise our fees without feeling guilty or anxious about it. I understand that this can be an uncomfortable topic and situation to handle, but we need to remember that at the end of the day we are running a business and not only we have bills to pay but, most importantly, we need to be paying ourselves!

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

What does it mean for us to have affordable fees?Understanding how affordability is a relative concept and how to implement payment plans into your businessWhat does selling really mean and  why it is not a negative thingIf you provide above average services and deliver above average results, then why are you charging average prices? Why we need to be careful developing a business model that places us as the "walmart in canine rehabilitation"

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

There is commonality amongst canine rehab therapists who are business owners and entrepreneurs: the fact that the majority of us actually never entered our profession with a goal of becoming a business owner. More often than not we have found ourselves in a situation where we have to become a business owners in order to make canine rehab work for us, but the challenge then becomes the fact that we have prepared ourselves to become a great clinician but never truly devoted enough time into learning the ins and out of business ownership.

I have shared my story before and that was exactly how I became a business owner back in 2017, and now that is the reason why I love help coaching and mentoring canine rehab therapists into understanding the business side of things so they can grow a profitable and successful canine rehab business of their own. During this journey I have found my passion in learning more and more about business, marketing, sales, operations, leadership, people management, and many other aspects of business ownership… and also through the years, both from my own learning and experience, I have found 2 key things that any canine rehab business owner and entrepreneur needs to keep in mind when it comes to achieving the success in business that they would like to achieve. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Finding a business model that works for what you want and that can be profitable The importance in determining how you will structure your fees and how much you will charge for your servicesHow marketing is where it all starts and how it can go beyond just attracting new clientsWhy the cost you try to save on marketing will actually cost you a whole lot more in the long runHow marketing will be key to set yourself apart and for overall business success so you don’t have to rely on anyone else sending you

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

I recently had a call with our Incubator Mastermind students about finishing 2025 strong while setting ourselves up to succeed in 2025, and that message seem to have resonated so well with them that I wanted to share some key things from it with you all for today’s podcast. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Why in order for us to set ourselves up for success in 2025 we need to start setting that in motion todayWhat can you do TODAY to start setting yourselves up to accomplish what you want (and hopefully more) in 2025Remember the year has not ended and we still have one more quarter to playThe importance of to picking one key thing to focus on over the next quarter that will set yourself up to start things right in 2025 (and some examples of what that means in marketing, raising prices, nurturing processes, etc)What you need to focus on to start working on each one of those things today

Over the last couple of weeks, I have gotten on numerous strategy calls with canine rehab therapists all over the world interested in hearing more about our Business Sherpa and how it could potentially help them achieve their goals. During those calls I always leave room for questions, and to be honest I love when people ask me questions because it gives me valuable insight into what canine rehab therapists are dealing with… a couple of folks asked me a question that really got me thinking afterwards, which lead me to writing down some of my thoughts on it for today’s podcast episode. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

What are key characteristics and personality traits from canine rehab therapists business owners who achieved success fast with their business? What did they do to accomplish more in a shorter period of time? The importance of becoming great problem solvers and strategic thinkersWhy we need to work on overcoming our fearsWhy we need to be careful with the false beliefs we are telling ourselves as business owners and canine rehab therapists

More often than not, when canine rehab therapists seek my help or advice, they are looking for growth within their business. That growth is usually about revenue because they want to pay themselves more or make canine rehab their full-time thing, or about increasing their caseload and getting their schedule busier (although the growth in caseload is often tied up with them wanting to increase overall revenue). But, although I understand the entrepreneurial drive and the human desire to always want more, we need to ask ourselves: is growth only about increasing our revenue or our caseload?

Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

Why we can't fall into the trap of thinking that growth is always about moreThe importance of finding out what growth means for you, based on what you need from the business and, most importantly, what you want in your lifeDigging deeper to figure out what the real issue is inside our business so we can have a better a plan as to how to address it Why business growth will never outpace our own personal growth along this journey of entrepreneurshipAsk yourself: what does growth means to you over the next 3 months?

As canine rehab therapists and entrepreneurs we are often battling our own insecurities, either clinically for from a business perspective. That is totally normal and quite often we tend to underestimate what we know and overestimate what we don't know, but a challenge that will come from it will be the fact that this self-doubt makes it easy for us to follow through on what we know we hav to do to keep things moving forward, especially when it comes to our business. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

There are many pieces of a puzzle that need to come together for us to gradually build a canine rehab business that is profitable and sustainable. During our recent Incubator Mastermind retreat we had a session on "The 8-layer Growth Funnel for Canine Rehab Therapists" where we discussed the 8 different systems that need to come together for us to achieve that, and for today's episode I wanted to discuss the first step: find, build, and deliver . Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

The importance of understanding the average customer does not understand what canine rehab entails, nor do they have a passion for it like we doWhy we need to to connect with our target audience in a deeper level and have an in-depth understanding of their fears, frustrations, goals, and aspirationsHow to build the solution for what they need rather than selling "canine rehab", "underwater treadmill, or "laser therapy"The importance of figuring out the business model that matches the results you can deliver along with the customer service you would want to provide

  • Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!

For today's episode we discuss the roller coaster of being a business and entrepreneur in the field of animal rehabilitation. This rollercoaster can be so stressful as many of us got into physical therapy or veterinary medicine simply looking for a steady job, but suddenly have found themselves having to be an entrepreneur just to be able to practice animal rehabilitation in our own terms. So, how do we deal with that? Listen to the full episode as we discuss:

The importance of self-acceptance and how that relates to dealing with the challenges we face as entrepreneurs Why do we get stuck and lose momentum, and what can we do to just keep moving forwardThe importance of turning an emotional problem into a logical challengeHow developing our "courage muscle" will help us deal with those challenges and be better prepared for the future Switching from a victim mentality to shaping our own lives with how we decide to face and deal with whatever life throws at us
