Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you’d leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution.

Ratings and reviews help with that (pssst, I read your 5-star reviews on the show!!) but nothing is better than a personal referral, it’d be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it.

Never forget, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage."

Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride.

  • Joyriders, Meet Maria!

An industrial designer and daily bike commuter since college, Maria wanted to make a product for women who were biking for transportation. She envisioned a better way to carry things on the bike that was both functional and stylish without hiding the fact that these were, in fact, bike bags.

Her first Interbike told her that guys were designing products for themselves, and ever since, she's been strongly committed to the idea of equipping women with the gear that they need to integrate biking into their lifestyle and continue to improve the product in service to that mission.

  • Howdy Joyriders!

    WELCOME TO SEASON THREE!

I'm joined on episode 31 by reformed backpacker-turned-bikecamper Dana Kroeck of the blog Blisters and Bugbites! We chat about her love of rail trails, a magical car-free island in..Michigan, and the most unlikely group ride you can possibly imagine.

But first.. UPDATES: Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling

I'm honored to have been included with some excellent voices in Elly Blue's 14th installment of her feminist bicycling zine Taking The Lane called Bikequity: Money, Class, and Bicycling:

Bicycling has the radical potential of equalizing our transportation system, creating more equitable opportunities from the personal to the societal, and being a vehicle for protest and social justice. But that isn't how it always works. The contributors to this volume of Taking the Lane zine tackle of the potentials and realities and unintended consequences of trying to create a better world using human-powered transportation.

    The Pedalshift Project: Episode 100!

Big thanks to Tim Mooney from the Pedalshift Project for the invitation to join him and the guys from the Sprocket Podcast for a live recording at Stream PDX for the 100th episode of the Pedalshift Project!

I was starting to get suuuper sick (hence the jar of orange/ginger/turmeric elixir) but still had a great time chatting with the Tim, Aaron, Guthrie, and Brock (not pictured, on account of him being the photographer) about type 2 fun, bike-it list items, and the future of bike touring.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

    Inspired to Ride

Inspired to Ride follows the inaugural TransAm bike race from Oregon to Virginia which took place in 2015. It is an ultra-endurance self-supported race across the entire country. It's mind-blowing what these athletes do to themselves.

Y'all. In digging up the trailer for this I discovered that Mike Hall was killed in 2017. He's prominently featured in the film and trailer below. He strikes me as a guy who did exactly what he wanted. May we all have the power to harness our own capabilities.

Also the gal who I referenced as a BADASS WOMAN ON A BIKE in the pod is named Juliana Buhring, the Guinness World Record for being the fastest woman to circumnavigate the world on a bicycle and she wrote about Mike in this article for Outside.

Here's the trailer. Ride in Peace, Mike.

A rail trail is the conversion of a disused railway track into a multi-use path, often including cycling and sometimes horse riding. Rail trails are typically flat and long, frequently running through historical areas, parks, or string together several of each kind.

Also, I read 5-star reviews out on the show because I love you.

Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it’d be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it.

Never forget, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage."

Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride.

    Forever Forward,

  • Howdy Joyriders!

On this episode of the podcast I chat with Elizabeth Cabral from the Street Trust, formerly known as BTA! As a "Roll Model" with WomenBike, I've been working with Elizabeth on planning this bike camping trip and I'm excited to sit down with Elizabeth to learn more about her bike love story and the power of the community she's building with WomenBike and a cycling group for Latinas called Mujeres en Movimiento.

  • Howdy Joyriders! This is a special show - just in time for Father's Day! One half of the father-daughter duo of fatherdaughtercyclingadventures.com, Jocelyn Rice is with us! On this episode we talk about cycle touring the world (28,000 miles, 37 countries, 33 months! for more awesome stats, click here!) with her dad! Their website features detailed blog posts, and they even have a book! I'm a little sentimental in the intro to this show, friends. It's Father's Day as I type this. I lost my dad, Frank, to pancreatic cancer in 2010. I started really getting into cycling while I was helping to care for him in 2009 after moving back to New Jersey from living in upstate New York. That was the summer I got my first real bike, and Lance Armstrong's return to the TdF was super heroic and personally inspiring. I watched Le Tour, and would go on rides, pushing out the mileage to explore more and go further. In no small way, this time was instrumental in the reclamation of my life and health. I talked about that with Brock and Aaron from the Sprocket Podcast here. I used to ride on the D&R Canal Tow Path a lot, and my dad told me a story about how when he was a Boy Scout, he and his troop went on a bike overnight! They took the D&R Canal up, probably to its' terminus in Frenchtown, camped overnight, and then came back the next day. I thought that was really cool, and he thought my new interest in bikes was really cool. Check out some vintage posts about this time from my other life here, here, and here. Later, while cleaning out my parents house, I found this fantastic photo. I believe this photo was taken in front of the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. After my father passed away (on my birthday, actually) in 2010, I ended up selling some of his workshop tools on Craigslist and to a friend of the family. I used a few bucks from that to purchase my treasured Ortlieb roll-top panniers and my Apex tent in 2011 for my first bike tour - the Midway to Cape May ride. (Read about that here, here, and here. I talked about that ride with Tim from Pedalshift here.) These are essential pieces of gear, and in this way, I am still held and supported by my dad. In this way, he gets to join me on every bike camping experience. While I wish it could have been more, I am so thankful. Oh, one cool coincidence is that Jocelyn is from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and her dad is an electrical engineer who worked on the Space Shuttle program. My dad was a computer guy who worked as a consultant on some component (a camera, I think?) that is on the Lunar Rover. Something my dad worked on is on the friggin Moon right now. How cool is that? Here's a moody-looking pic of him (complete with early 80's jorts - wonder where I get it from?) in front of a LVR replica taken at the Kennedy Space Center. Miss you, Pops* Happy Fathers Day. Xo

  • Howdy Joyriders! Welcome our first returning guest! Friend of the show Jasmine Reese is back! We first met Jasmine back on episode #4 of The Joyride, that was a vintage, launch week episode and a whole lot has happened since! Jasmine has pedaled more than 14,000 miles across North America with her lovely fur baby and best friend, Fiji, and met countless kind souls and fiddle strings along the way. On this episode we talk about barter culture and the kindness of others, her favorite stretch of road, why she’s transitioning to a recumbent trike, and plans for Jasmine and Fiji's next epic adventure. Learn all about Jasmine and Fiji's adventures over the years at FiJaPAW.com (short for Jasmine and Fiji Pedal Around the World) and click here to read her journals!

Before we get into that, a few things: >> First, it is June, and in Portland where every month is bike month, June is something special because of Pedalpalooza, a month long celebration where community members organize different themed rides. I went to the kick off ride this year and was so glad that I did! I ran into a gal who came on the bike camping trip that I co-hosted with friend of the show Mollie Futterman (Joyride003) last year. We had a great time rolling around Portland, including taking the lane on a few bridges with a few hundred new friends. Yes, there was one or two disgruntled motorists and I did feel bad for them. Traffic here sucks already, and you then add in all the extra riders that the sun draws out, and a whole calendar of rides all month long, and well….. Might I suggest cycling? Anywhoo Joyriders, maybe one of these bike fun events will inspire you to organize something cool in your town. I will be attending the Bikecamping 101 ride on June 12. Say Hi if you see me. >>If you’re listening to this within a few weeks of the release, June 2017, there’s still time to get in on the WomenBikePDX Bike Camping for beginners. That’s happening solstice weekend, it's for women and women identified folk, hosted by me, yours truly. it’s a 24 mile casual ride suitable for any skill level, $10-$15 sliding scale includes camping, firewood, two meals, and a whole lotta good company. We’re having an info session on June 13 at the Street Trust formerly known as BTA on NW Glisan in Portland. Join the Women Bike PDX Facebook group and register here. It’s gonna be rad. >> Speaking of Rad, you might recall when Aqua Dublavee and I were having Coffee Outside a few shows back on Ep 24, I mentioned that Veni Vidi Velo was not happening this year, but I am so pleased to report that this is no longer true! V3 IS Happening it’s the first weekend in August. it’s for women trans femme bike glamping weekend in the Portland area. I will not be there this year, unfortunately, but I think YOU should go, and have a fantastic time. Email venividivelo[at]gmail[dot]com for questions or to register.

On this episode, we hang out at the Bluffs and chat about her new ride affectionately known as QueenB, the shopping experience, going fast, how to carry stuff including our pups!, random parking lots in North Portland, stump town cold brew, and what backgammon, bikes, and South America have in common. • Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I chat with the one and only Ayesha McGowan, who you may also know as A Quick Brown Fox. You may remember her name first mentioned by guest Monica Garrison, Founder of Black Girls Do Bike, back on episode #8 of the Joyride. Ayesha discovered competitive cycling in 2014 and has since been on a mission to become the first professional female african american road cyclist. Ayesha has been featured in Bicycling Magazine, Bicycle Times, BBC World, and Vice Sports.

In other news, I want to give a quick shout out to Brock and Aaron of the Sprocket Podcast who kindly hosted me as a guest on their show last week. We talked about GirlEatsBike, Portland, and of course women on bikes. I had a lot of fun chatting with them and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how other podcasters make stuff happen. Link to that right here!

I’m so excited about this show, folks. I’ve been following Ayesha for a while and am totally stoked to get to hear about her journey. On this episode of the Joyride we’ll hear about Ayesha's evolution from commuting into advocacy and then competitive racing, using the bike to conquer your fears. inception of A Quick Brown Fox, as well as the Do Better Together rides, and why building community is so important.

Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I meet up with Aqua Dublavee for a long-awaited coffee outside. On this super conversational episode, we talk about the magnetic pull of Portland Oregon, talk about tips for finding your tribe, I confess about passive aggressive responses to road rage, and we do LOTS of day dreaming about bike camping. This show is a little different folks - it’s the first time I’ve recorded face to face as well as outside with all of the elements you might expect to hear in an urban park. You’ll get some ambiance like birds and the sound of camp stoves, as well as some guy yelling in the background, and there’s a fairly loud fountain nearby! I tried to clean it up to have our voices stand out as strongly as possible, but I apologize in advance if it’s hard for anyone to hear. First time, ya know?

Dude, this was rad. Big thanks to Aqua for hanging out and sharing the bike love with us! Connect with her on the Instagram or on Twitter. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it’d be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Remember, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C

Meet Angie, Amy, Heddy, and Made Victoria!

I cannot even believe how much I smiled while recording and listening back to this podcast! It was so much fun to chat with this inspiring group of gals. You can't see Amy in the screenshot below, but she was there :)

From the Toxic Shocks Cycling site:

"We strive to promote and encourage women's cycling in Houston.

This group is a conglomeration of ladies and friends who ride bikes. The rides stop at bars and other fun places, to drinky drank and talk girl smack. To be clear, we welcome anyone who identifies as a woman and/or is non binary and/or trans! The goal of this group is to provide a safe space for women to enjoy Houston's growing cycling community. The meet-up is every Monday evening around 7 p.m. Carnegie Van Guard High School (Taft/West Gray) on top of the parking garage. Roll out is about 7:15 p.m. New riders, please note that it is necessary to bring a bike lock, lights for riding at night, drivers license or ID (for bar entry) and cash or credit card." Make sure to visit ToxicShocksCycling.com or link up with their FB group for information on their weekly ride and other events like MS150, Alley Cats, Bike Around the Bay, Cranksgiving, and more.

    WomenBikeCamping!

If you are here in the Portland area, yours truly is going to be hosting a bike camping overnight at the end of June with WomenBikePDX. This will be similar to the ride I did last year with friend of the show Mollie Futterman (check out her episode here). For details on the Roll Models program, click here. WomenBike PDX is an inclusive group organized by the Street Trust, meant to bridge the gender gap for Portland bikey-folk. I’m super proud to be one of their Roll Models, a peer-mentoring program to help get more women on bikes. So if you’re a gal or gal-identified in the Portand area and want to try bike commuting, or want to run errands but need some help with figuring out how to carry stuff, or maybe you're in the market for a new ride and want someone to be your wing-women or whatever when you go shopping - then I highly recommend you check out the WomenBike PDX Roll Models program. if you have any questions about the camping event here in Portland, or want to connect with me as a Roll Model, or with any other questions or comments - you can email me at THEJOYRIDEPODCAST[at]GMAIL.com or click here to learn more about the program from the Street Trust.

A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel. The first ghost bikes were created in St. Louis, Missouri in 2003."
