Episode 268 - Career Transitions: A Guide for Corporate Professionals Seeking Change
The end of the year often sparks reflection. For corporate professionals, it’s a time to assess the past 12 months, consider new directions, and perhaps make big decisions about the future. This year, those reflections feel more urgent. Economic uncertainty, shifting workplace norms, and the relentless pace of technological change have left many seasoned professionals questioning their career paths.
The idea of a career transition is nothing new. But what feels different in 2024 is the sheer complexity of it. For years, career advice was dominated by stories of bold leaps—dramatic pivots into entirely new industries or ventures. These tales are inspiring but rarely reflect the nuanced challenges that mid- and senior-level professionals face. Transitioning isn’t about abandoning everything you’ve built; it’s about rethinking how your experience, skills, and passions align with the opportunities of tomorrow.

Episode 267 - 2024 Was the Toughest Year for Job Seekers and Recruiters in Decades – with Geoff Slade
As a career coach, I’ve spent years guiding corporate professionals through the ups and downs of job searching, but 2024 is proving to be one of the most challenging years I’ve ever witnessed. During a recent conversation with Geoff Slade, a recruitment veteran with over five decades of experience, it became clear that this is not just another cyclical dip in the market. This year feels unprecedented in both its difficulty and unpredictability.
What we’re seeing is a job market that’s simultaneously contracting in certain sectors while shifting toward new priorities in others. Job ads are down 13% overall, with the ICT sector seeing a shocking 23% decline. Banking, traditionally a stalwart in corporate hiring, is also feeling the pinch. So where does this leave the corporate professionals I work with—those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, who have always been able to rely on their expertise and experience to secure their next role? Unfortunately, many of them are finding that the old rules no longer apply.

Episode 266 - The Career-Building Power of Rest in a Burnout Economy
In the relentless grind of today’s professional world, “hustle culture” reigns supreme. For corporate professionals, especially those navigating job searches or career transitions, this often means working tirelessly to stay relevant and competitive. Yet, despite all the energy poured into applications, networking, and interview preparation, the results often fall short.
The problem? We’ve misunderstood the value of rest.
As a career coach working with corporate professionals for years, I’ve seen a troubling trend. High-achieving individuals—many of them seasoned executives—are burning themselves out during what should be a time of reinvention and opportunity. Rest, the cornerstone of resilience and creativity, has become the most overlooked aspect of their strategy.
And the consequences are stark: poorer decisions, missed opportunities, and, perhaps most damaging of all, the erosion of their confidence.
In a labor market as competitive as today’s, where layoffs remain frequent and economic uncertainty looms, it’s time we reconsider how we approach rest—not as a retreat from ambition, but as its fuel.

Episode 265 - The Challenges and Rewards of Transitioning from Corporate to Nonprofit Leadership
As I reflect on my latest podcast interview with Nick Grono, CEO of The Freedom Fund, I am struck by the growing interest among corporate professionals to pivot into nonprofit leadership. It's a topic I often discuss with my clients—seasoned executives who, after years of building a career defined by financial success, now seek purpose and fulfillment. This desire for purpose has never been stronger, as we navigate an economic landscape where layoffs and corporate restructuring are leaving professionals questioning the sustainability of their paths.
But making the switch from corporate to nonprofit leadership isn’t as straightforward as some might think. As Nick and I discussed how the nonprofit sector operates with different rules, mindsets, and measures of success. And for those accustomed to traditional corporate roles, understanding these differences is crucial to making a successful transition.

Episode 263 - Finding the Right Job and Building a Personal Brand
Professionals face an ever-growing set of challenges as they navigate career transitions, seek advancement, or re-enter the workforce. Finding the right position and standing out as a candidate can be challenging, even for experienced professionals.
Recently, I had a conversation with Russell Ayles, a recruitment expert with nearly two decades in the industry, specializing in retail, fashion, and e-commerce. Our discussion shed light on themes that resonate deeply with the corporate professionals I coach. These include the importance of transparency in the hiring process, the value of personal branding, and a rising emphasis on ethics in recruitment practices. As we discussed these topics, I couldn’t help but reflect on how they connect to broader trends shaping the current employment landscape.

As the year comes to a close, even the most experienced professionals seeking a new job will often face what I call the “end-of-year heebie-jeebies.” It’s a feeling of anxiety and uncertainty that creeps in during the holiday season. The workplace has transformed dramatically in the past few years, and many corporate professionals are finding themselves wondering, What’s next? Will remote work remain viable, or are we heading back to the traditional office environment?
In light of recent decisions from major companies like Amazon, which plans to bring all employees back to the office full-time by January 2025, these questions have become even more pressing. While some organizations push for a return to in-office work, there is mounting evidence suggesting that hybrid work will continue to be a key model for corporate professionals. In this blog, we’ll explore why hybrid work is likely here to stay, and how corporate professionals can thrive in this evolving landscape.
For many professionals, hybrid work has been a game changer since the pandemic began in 2020. The flexibility to work from home, reduced commuting time, and better work-life balance have made remote and hybrid models highly attractive. But is it sustainable long-term?

How to Find Career Clarity When You're Feeling Stuck
As a career coach, I often work with professionals who, despite having decades of experience, find themselves uncertain about their career direction. They’ve climbed the corporate ladder, led teams, and made significant contributions to their organizations—but now, they feel stuck. Many of them come to me not because they lack experience or skills, but because they no longer know what they want to achieve next. This is an increasingly common challenge among experienced corporate professionals, and I believe it’s crucial to address this issue with a structured, thoughtful approach.

Since the pandemic, corporate professionals across the globe have been reassessing their career goals, purpose, and interests. Many are no longer content with simply climbing the corporate ladder; instead, they are seeking roles that align with their values, provide fulfillment, and offer flexibility. In both the US and Australia, professionals are changing industries, pursuing career pivots, and prioritizing work-life balance more than ever before.
A recent survey by McKinsey revealed that over 40% of employees are considering leaving their jobs in search of better opportunities that reflect their new priorities. Similarly, research from PwC Australia shows that a significant number of professionals—especially those in their 40s and 50s—are actively seeking career changes, with many citing the pandemic as a catalyst for reevaluating what matters most to them.
As a career coach, I work with corporate professionals who are not only looking for job advancement but are also asking deeper questions about what they truly want out of their careers. In this article, I’ll explore the most pressing concerns job seekers face today and share insights I’ve gained from working with professionals navigating these transitions.

The job market in 2024 remains complex and competitive, especially for experienced professionals. Whether you’re in the US or Australia, senior-level roles are becoming harder to land, and even seasoned executives find themselves in uncharted territory.
In the US, the labor market has shown signs of slowing growth. While the unemployment rate has remained relatively low, many companies are opting for cautious hiring practices, particularly for higher-level positions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, sectors such as finance and technology have seen a reduction in the number of open executive roles as organizations focus on cost-saving measures and operational efficiencies.
Australia faces similar challenges. Experienced professionals are navigating a job market that is still feeling the effects of recent economic shifts. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that while job vacancies remain, many organizations are tightening budgets, particularly for senior management and leadership positions. As companies restructure or downsize, professionals with decades of experience are increasingly finding themselves in a crowded job market, vying for fewer opportunities.
In this environment, many seasoned professionals are asking, “How do I stand out?” As a career coach specializing in job searching and career advancement for experienced professionals, I’ve heard this question countless times. Having coached executives, managers, and directors navigating these uncertain times, I’ve come to understand the specific challenges they face. In my latest podcast episode, I answer the most common and pressing questions from corporate professionals and offer actionable advice to help them regain control of their job search and career trajectory.

In today’s hyper-competitive job market, your resume is your personal marketing tool. Therefore, choosing a good template is quite a challenge for many professionals. Especially due to the fact that the first "thing" looking at your resume most often is a bot, not the human eye. Most employers now rely on Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to sift through countless resumes, which means the template you choose can significantly impact whether or not your application ever gets seen by human eyes.
As a career coach with years of experience helping professionals apply for jobs and advance their careers, I’ve encountered countless resumes that looked great on the surface but were fundamentally flawed in terms of ATS compatibility. To investigate whether freely available resume templates are up to the task, I conducted an in-depth analysis of some of the most popular sources for free resume templates online. The results were enlightening—and in some cases, alarming.

Recent incidents involving leadership communication failures, such as the global IT disruption caused by CrowdStrike and the mishandling of security by the U.S. Secret Service, offer valuable lessons for corporate professionals on the importance of crisis communication.
In July 2024, CrowdStrike—a leading cybersecurity firm—released a faulty software update that triggered widespread system crashes on Windows devices globally. This incident disrupted vital sectors including healthcare, finance, and transportation, leading to significant operational chaos. Despite the technical nature of the issue, CrowdStrike's leadership struggled to effectively communicate the situation, which amplified public concern and shook confidence in the company's ability to manage crises.
Similarly, the U.S. Secret Service faced severe criticism following their response to a security breach in July 2024 during a campaign rally for former President Donald Trump. The mishandling of communication in the aftermath, coupled with delayed and unclear public statements, eroded trust and led to calls for leadership changes within the agency.
These examples underscore the critical need for leaders to be prepared with clear, empathetic, and confident communication strategies during crises. Whether it's handling the pressure of a job interview or navigating a major organizational crisis, the ability to communicate effectively during tough times is a skill that can set you apart as a leader. This blog will explore essential strategies for mastering crisis communication, helping you advance your career and make informed decisions during critical moments.
