  • In a poignant and deeply personal episode of The Jar, we had the privilege of meeting Lisa Perez in the comfort of her bungalow, nestled within the Northern Arizona University campus. As we settled around TV dinner trays with The Jar between us, Lisa began to share her remarkable life journey.

Hailing from Idaho, Lisa's family roots run deep, with both her mother and father's families having lived there for generations. Growing up alongside her older brother, her family's frequent relocations due to her father's government contract negotiations eventually led them to settle in the Santa Barbara area of California. Lisa's quest for peace and understanding led her on a spiritual journey, where she grappled with her beliefs and sought answers about God and existence.

She went on to build her own successful businesses, mirroring her father's career, and became a high achiever, always on the move. However, this relentless pace took a toll, leading to a sudden breakdown that resulted in her losing everything. Lisa found herself homeless and eventually in a psych ward, where she began to confront the trauma that had haunted her for years.

Lisa's journey of healing involves facing painful memories, from enduring hurtful names from her family to surviving a traumatic assault during a sleepover at a young age, a secret she carried for four decades. One of the most challenging aspects of Lisa's story is her struggle to reconcile her love for her father, whom she admired deeply, with his inaction in protecting her from abuse that occurred under his roof. Her complex relationship with her son and her ongoing mourning for her father further complicate her path to healing.

This episode is a testament to Lisa's resilience and strength as she navigates the difficult terrain of her past. Join us as we listen to Lisa's story, a journey towards peace, self-discovery, and letting go of the burdens of the past. The Jar continues to bring you real conversations with real people, and Lisa's story is a powerful example of the transformative nature of these conversations.

  • We had the privilege of meeting Haven Seltmann in her home in Phoenix. Originally hailing from Portland, Oregon, Haven's life took her to the charming town of Silverton during her formative years. She grew up as an only child, her younger brother sadly passing away at a young age. This early experience set the stage for a profound spiritual journey.

Haven's upbringing was steeped in church and spirituality, evolving over the years as she learned to follow the universe's cues. Her relationship with her parents has been somewhat unconventional. Her dad feels more like an uncle, while her mom and sister play significant roles in her life.

During our conversation, we delved into the notion that as we grow and become parents ourselves, we often gain a deeper appreciation for our own parents' struggles and imperfections. Haven humorously referred to herself as the "poster child for the benefit of the doubt," reflecting on the judgments we cast on our parents as we mature and gain more understanding.

One poignant theme that emerged from Haven's story was the hope that children harbor for their parents to simply be present. She emphasized that being there for your children doesn't require trying to be more than what you are; it's about genuinely showing up.

Haven's journey is one of introspection, growth, and evolving perspectives. Join us as we sit down with Haven, traverse her life's path through The Jar, and gain insights into the complexity of family dynamics and the profound impact of parenting.

  • On a Thursday morning in North Vegas, we ventured to meet our next guest, Marcel. As we approached Marcel's street, a striking sight greeted us – a bright red pickup truck covered in what seemed like infinite graffiti, intentional graffiti that reminded us of the work of New York artist Renda Writer.

We parked the van across from Marcel's house, and almost instantly, a booming voice and a warm greeting echoed from the driveway. Marcel welcomed us, setting the tone for what promised to be a profound conversation.

Marcel hails from Ocean Beach, California, growing up with one brother and one sister in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. However, his childhood was marked by financial struggles, drugs in the household, and barely scraping by. His father, a charismatic Rolling Stone-type figure, eventually retired as a nurse at the age of 73.

We learned that the graffiti-covered truck outside belonged to Marcel, and it was more than just a vehicle; it was a canvas for his work. Marcel reaches out to strangers on the internet, engaging them in conversations about their mental health. If he senses someone isn't doing well, he gets in his truck, drives to them, has a talk, and they leave their mark on his truck.

What motivates Marcel to do this? The heartbreaking tragedy he endured on March 26 several years ago when he found his daughter in the garage, having taken her own life. Determined to prevent others from suffering a similar fate, Marcel has become a grief and trauma specialist. He's transformed his pain into purpose and his trauma into tools.

Marcel is a man with an unshakable mission to offer love, support, and help to those who need it. His dedication to saving lives is born from the heart-wrenching experience of not being able to save his own daughter. Marcel is a remarkable human being doing incredible work, and we invite you to join us, Marcel, and The Jar for another real conversation with real people.

  • In this touching episode of The Jar, we had the privilege of meeting La’Erica Simms in her apartment in Lake Havasu City, where her five-year-old daughter was home sick, making her an honorary guest. La’Erica, a self-described introvert, initially approached the conversation reservedly. However, as the conversation unfolded, she gradually opened up, revealing her remarkable life journey.

Originally from Inglewood, California, La’Erica grew up with her mom and older brother, as her dad was absent from their lives. Her mother, despite battling mental illness, was deeply loved and respected by La’Erica. Nevertheless, she suffered under her mother's abuse, surviving a harrowing murder-suicide attempt that left her with both physical and emotional scars.

Following this traumatic event, La’Erica was placed in foster care and eventually sent to live with her grandmother on her mother's side on the East Coast. Unfortunately, this new environment did not offer the stability and support she needed.

The conversation delved into La’Erica's experience as a single parent, a topic that weighed heavily on her. She shared her desire to break the cycle of single parenthood due to her past experiences, revealing the guilt and difficulty she faces in finding grace for herself.

Despite these challenges, La’Erica finds herself in a good place today. She has a fulfilling job where she is valued, enjoys being part of a recovery group, and is a loving mother to her two children. Her journey through The Jar is a testament to resilience, strength, and the power of transformation. Tune in to hear La’Erica's story, as The Jar continues to engage in real conversations with real people.

  • In this heartwarming episode of The Jar, we had the pleasure of visiting Stephen Wright in his beautiful Flagstaff home, nestled on a hillside with a picturesque view.

Stephen's life journey is a tapestry of experiences that spans multiple locations and spiritual exploration. Born in 1979 in Pittsburgh, his family's journey took them from Ohio to Atlanta to Denver, finally landing in Scottsdale. Stephen humorously shared anecdotes about his move from Atlanta to Denver as a young boy, where he quickly shed his southern accent to adapt to his new surroundings, resulting in a now "vanilla" accent that doesn't give away his origin.

His spiritual journey began in his youth, where he immersed himself in church activities, youth groups, and even music, learning to play the drums and guitar. He fondly remembered his time attending a black church in Decatur, Georgia, a unique and enriching experience that left a lasting impact. As Stephen matured, he started asking deeper questions about Christianity and began exploring other religions, leading to a broader and more profound spirituality.

Stephen's family includes two siblings who are significantly younger. His journey eventually led him to Flagstaff in 2004, initially for a camping trip with old friends. However, during this trip, he found not only a beautiful natural setting but also a sense of community and belonging that inspired him to build his tribe.

In a delightful turn of events, Stephen, who became a father at the tender age of 18, now has the opportunity to savor fatherhood once again, this time with a five-year-old son. The joy on his face as he shared this experience is palpable, highlighting the unique perspective and appreciation that comes with being a father at different stages of life.

Join us as we delve into Stephen's journey through life, his diverse experiences, and his newfound sense of fulfillment and joy in fatherhood. The Jar continues to bring you real conversations with real people, and Stephen's story is a testament to the richness of these conversations.

  • In the outskirts of Flagstaff, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Holly Jaleski, at her fascinating factory, Nova Kinetic, which she co-founded with her husband, Nolan. Holly's journey is one filled with adventure, wildlife, and a passion for the outdoors.

Holly originally hails from western Kentucky, but her family had strong ties to New York. Her father was drawn to the outdoors, particularly working on barges, so they eventually settled in Key West. Growing up, they seized every opportunity to explore the natural world, indulging in pursuits like hunting and fishing. Holly had one brother, and she quickly became known as the outdoorsy one in the family. She even climbed her first mountain at the tender age of 9.

As she ventured into college, Holly formed connections with Native Americans. These friendships would later inspire her travels to India, and then back to places like Tucson and Florida. However, her true passion was working with wild animals, and she began her journey in this field.

It was during her conservation work that she crossed paths with her future husband, Nolan. Both were coming out of previous relationships and were a bit older, so they initially started as friends. Their connection deepened over time, and after eight months of dating, they realized they had fallen deeply in love.

Today, Holly and Nolan run Nova Kinetic together, where they build things and solve problems collaboratively. Their partnership has resulted in the creation of a beautiful life together. Join us, along with Holly and The Jar, for another engaging conversation with a real person who has lived a real, adventurous life.

  • We had the pleasure of visiting Andrew Camp in his beautiful home nestled on a serene hill in Flagstaff. Andrew's origin traces back to Colorado Springs, but his childhood took a significant turn when his family relocated to Orange County, California, where he grew up alongside three sisters. Interestingly, the youngest sibling was initially expected to be another boy, but to everyone's surprise, she turned out to be Andrew's fourth sister.

After completing college, Andrew embarked on a unique adventure. He spent three years in China, living in a small city, serving as a minister. Upon his return to the United States, he found himself on a blind date in Park City with a chef, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Andrew eventually returned to ministry, got married, and started a family. He landed a fulfilling job with a church in Flagstaff. However, as life unfolded, the challenges of relocating, adapting, and settling in took a toll on the church's attendance and financial stability. Unfortunately, Andrew found himself in the position of being the last hired and the first to be let go.

The loss of community, especially when intertwined with one's work, can be profoundly challenging. Andrew likened it to the feeling of "God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Yet, through this struggle, he recognized that life is an ever-evolving journey, one that presents both challenges and promises. Join us as we sit down with Andrew, listen to his story, and explore his ongoing journey through The Jar.

  • In a cozy little manufactured house in Flagstaff, we had the pleasure of meeting the dynamic duo of energy and creativity, Jason and Billie. These two young filmmakers have a story that's as unique and diverse as their talents.

Their journey began on the big island, where they both found themselves working on organic farms. Despite having little in common initially, they discovered a shared passion for music that formed a strong bond between them. Each time they parted ways, life had a funny way of bringing them back together.

Billie, a jack-of-all-trades and serial entrepreneur, even decided to obtain a commercial driver's license to drive trucks for reasons known only to him. This decision led to more conversations and sparked ideas. In 2022, they officially incorporated their venture, which combined elements of music, comedy, trucking, and a touch of tech, all with a little Canadian and Texan influence.

The episode opens with Jason and Billie in their movie characters, providing hilarious entertainment for the first 20 minutes. However, as The Jar delivers a real question, they transition into a genuine conversation. Beyond their humor and creativity, Jason and Billy reveal their depth as real individuals. They discuss marriage, relationships, life, and love.

Join us, Jason, Billie, and The Jar for an engaging and entertaining conversation with these two talented individuals who embody the spirit of indie filmmaking and artistic expression.

  • In a heartfelt and introspective episode of The Jar, we had the pleasure of meeting Dale Briggs at his trailer on the outskirts of Flagstaff. The picturesque setting, with foothills and mountains in the distance, served as the backdrop for a candid conversation.

Dale's journey begins in Sharonville, a tight-knit community near Cincinnati. He hails from a family deeply rooted in American heritage, with a lineage dating back to the Daughters of the Revolution. His upbringing was marked by a strong sense of law and order, instilled by his father, a prosecutor, and his mother, true cole miners daughter from Eastern Kentucky, the ones heralding from the American Revolution who began shipping moonshine when Dale was just 11 as "medicine" from hi Aunt & Uncle who made it from their still.

Despite the challenges and colorful stories of moonshine, drugs, and a family with its share of complexities, there was a constant thread running through Dale's life—a yearning to be accepted for who he truly was. Amidst all the tumultuous experiences and substances within his family, he longed to find that one person who would embrace him unconditionally.

Dale's life unfolded in three distinct phases, with one-third spent in Ohio, one-third in Tampa, and now the final third in Flagstaff. He grapples with self-forgiveness, striving to be the best father he can be while also reconciling his feelings of exclusion from his youngest child's life. His determination shines through as he strives to be the best grandparent possible.

Join us as we sit in front of Dale's trailer, surrounded by the beauty of wildflowers and distant mountains, reflecting on two-thirds of his life and the hope he holds for redemption and acceptance. The Jar continues to bring you real conversations with real people, and Dale's story is a poignant reminder of the power of self-discovery and the possibility of finding peace through these conversations.

  • In South Phoenix, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Dan Collins, a true product of the Southwest Chicago area. Dan shared some insights into what it was like growing up in the heart of the Midwest, which offered him a somewhat typical Midwestern childhood experience.

As the only boy in the family, Dan's upbringing had its share of unique experiences. His father was a dedicated union worker, which undoubtedly left an impression on young Dan. Around the sixth grade, the government implemented a busing program, reshuffling children from one part of the city to another for school. Dan found himself attending a Catholic school to avoid being bused into the inner city, but this move didn't shield him from youthful mischief.

At the tender age of 13, Dan ventured into some questionable activities, including pilfering Valiums from his grandma's medicine cabinet and even getting caught selling "black beauties." This led to a tumultuous period that culminated in a 90-day stay in a psychiatric ward. His stay was etched in his memory, from the names of the counselors to the doctors who attended to him. After his release, he entered high school and fell into a life of gang involvement, distancing himself from his family.

A pivotal moment came when Dan found his passion in sports, particularly track, and believed he was on the right track (pun intended). However, a series of mistakes led to him losing his eligibility, pushing him down a darker path. Despite enduring hardships, including struggles with alcoholism, Dan managed to achieve sobriety in 2013, embarking on a journey of recovery.

Remarkably, Dan is now an ordained minister who dedicates his life to working with addicts and alcoholics, offering support and guidance. His story is one of struggle, resilience, redemption, and ultimately, service. Join us in this powerful episode as we delve into Dan's life, filled with its share of trials and triumphs, and discover the inspiring journey of a man who found a higher calling in helping others. This is The Jar, where we engage in real conversations with real people, sharing their compelling stories.

  • In the heart of Phoenix, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Ron Cortez, at his charming coffee shop that he co-owns with his wife, Judith. Ron's story is a testament to the American dream, with its origins in Costa Rica.

Born in the 1960s in Costa Rica, Ron embarked on his journey to America in the 1980s as an immigrant. His parents had always been entrepreneurs, instilling in him a strong work ethic and a drive to succeed. Ron grew up with two brothers and a sister in a Catholic household, where he was shaped by his family's values.

Upon arriving in the United States, Ron leveraged his background in banking to secure a job, a career path he pursued for eight years. However, life had its twists and turns, and Ron found himself at the lowest point he had ever experienced. But judging by Ron's resilience and determination, it's evident that not much can keep him down.

Ron faced adversity earlier in his life when he lost a leg while navigating the challenges of street life. However, he had a strong, influential figure in his life—his grandmother, who lived to the remarkable age of 107. Hailing from Panama, she played a vital role in shaping Ron's character and values.

Despite the obstacles he faced, Ron discovered love and built a beautiful family, including two daughters and a son. Alongside his family, he ventured into the coffee and cocoa business, which has become an incredible success story. Ron's journey as an immigrant who has created a thriving family and business is truly inspirational.

Join us in this episode of The Jar as we engage in a real conversation with Ron, a remarkable individual who has forged his path in pursuit of the American dream. His story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the beauty of building a meaningful life and business.

  • Nestled down a peaceful dirt road off a main highway in Sonoita lies Muriel's Wild Oak Farm, a haven of tranquility and renewal. Muriel's story is one of transformation and resilience, and her farm reflects the beauty she's created amidst life's challenges.

Originally a Staten Island, New York native, Muriel always felt the call of the countryside, yearning to escape the city's hustle and bustle. She grew up with one brother, navigating her family's evolving religious beliefs, from staunch religiosity to atheism and then a return to spirituality through a unique "Dog church." However, her mother's job at the University of Arizona led the family out west, away from the city she longed to leave behind.

Muriel married and had two daughters, devoting herself to her family and her marriage for 27 years. Amidst her dedication to making her marriage work, she ran several businesses. However, in 2015, Muriel faced the painful reality of divorce, which brought significant changes to her life.

At Wild Oak Farm, Muriel cultivates over a thousand lavender plants, tends to her goats, and is in the process of creating a glamorous camping (glamping) facility. Guests can take goats for tranquil walks on the rolling hills and meditate in the fragrant lavender fields. The farm reflects her unwavering determination to build a place of beauty, peace, and renewal.

During the Blakely Ranch Equine Retreat, we had the privilege of touring Muriel's farm, taking her goats for strolls, and experiencing the serenity of her lavender fields. She also offers a selection of wonderful farm products for sale, reflecting her deep connection to her land.

Muriel's journey is a testament to her resilience and her pursuit of a fulfilling life. Despite the challenges she's faced, her indomitable spirit shines through. Wild Oak Farm is not just a place; it's a testament to Muriel's ability to create a sanctuary of beauty, serenity, and renewal right where she is, at home.

Join us, Muriel, and The Jar for a heartfelt conversation with a remarkable person who has found her piece of paradise and her path to a good life amidst life's trials and tribulations.

  • In a picturesque and historic home nestled on the edges of Sonoita, we had the pleasure of meeting our next guest, Tami Blakely. Her stunning property, complete with an expansive view and a pack of six Ridgebacks, set the stage for our conversation.

Tami is a true Arizona native, hailing from a family with deep roots in the state—fifth generation, to be precise. Her family's journey began with the ownership of the only original general store in their area. Over time, they transitioned into the oil and gas industry, becoming prominent players in the Wickenburg, Arizona region as the state developed.

Our introduction to Tami came through another guest on the show, Terri Malloy. We had the privilege of participating in a three-day equine therapy retreat at the Blakely Ranch, an experience that left a profound impact on us. Equine therapy, for those unfamiliar, is a powerful and transformative healing modality. It allows clients to communicate and connect with horses in profound ways, leading to personal growth and insights.

Tami's role in this retreat was multi-faceted. First and foremost, she's a bona fide cowgirl, contributing a deep knowledge of equine interactions. Secondly, her coaching skills are top-notch, helping clients navigate their emotions and experiences during the therapy. The third, and perhaps most remarkable, attribute is her gift of sensing people's emotional states and the presence of things seen and unseen.

Our conversation with Tami was nothing short of fascinating. She effortlessly responded to our questions, often revealing the answer before we finished reading them. Her personal story, while tragic and at times unimaginable in its hardships, has shaped her into the extraordinary person she is today. She's estranged from her family due to circumstances beyond her control, yet she's taken every life challenge and turned it into her life's purpose. Tami Blakely serves as a shining example of how to transform adversity into strength and purpose. Join us, Tami, and The Jar in this captivating episode that showcases the power of resilience and the human spirit.

  • In the picturesque hills of Sonoita, Arizona, we had the privilege of meeting our next guest, Annaliese, in her beautiful home nestled into the hillside.

Annaliese's life journey began in Kingston, Jamaica, where her family had relocated due to her father's work as a builder of factories. Growing up in Kingston provided her with a unique and vibrant childhood, complete with all the challenges of a developing country. Yet, amidst those challenges, Annaliese had the opportunity to experience life in a different culture.

The family had their own brush with fame, as they became acquainted with the Bob Marley family, particularly the daughters. Eventually, life led them to a small town in Oregon, where Annaliese fell in love with the simplicity and charm of rural living, especially her deep connection with animals. She shared the challenges of growing up in a household marked by her father's struggles with alcohol and abuse, a situation that eventually led to her mother's departure, leaving behind three brothers.

Annaliese's journey took an exciting turn when she joined the Blakely Ranch Equine Retreat, working alongside our other guest, Tami Blakely. This retreat allowed her to tap into her incredible hosting skills, opening her home to participants and exploring her catering expertise by partnering with events like this. Her wife, Deanna, also played an essential role by graciously opening up their home to support Annaliese's endeavors.

During our conversation, Annaliese opened up about a profoundly personal and touching moment regarding forgiveness. She candidly discussed her decision to have an abortion and the complex emotions that often accompany such decisions, especially when reflecting on them in later years. We also delved into the delightful story of how Annaliese met her wife, which added a touch of humor and warmth to our conversation.

Annaliese's story is that of a truly beautiful human being, and we are grateful to have met her on this journey with The Jar. As she embarks on a new chapter in her life, we had the opportunity to reflect on who she is today and how her unique journey has shaped her into the remarkable person she has become. Join us in this insightful and heartfelt episode.

Jasmine's story begins in Las Cruces, where she grew up with her brother and loving parents, deeply rooted in their community. However, her pursuit of a dream took her thousands of miles away to upstate New York for a college internship on the path to becoming a veterinarian. Little did she know that this journey would lead to a period of introspection and, ultimately, self-discovery.

During her time in upstate New York, Jasmine found herself working at an animal clinic, where she thrived professionally. However, she also realized that she was slowly slipping into depression, grappling with loneliness and uncertainty about her life's direction. The turning point came in 2019 when her father had a life-altering accident, prompting Jasmine to return home to assist in his recovery.

Back in Las Cruces, she explored a career in real estate, which unexpectedly opened the door to a fulfilling insurance job that profoundly changed her life.
