  • Our culture is highly individualistic, but is this the way of the Kingdom? When we look at the early church in Acts, there is a marked difference in how they lived beyond themselves. They lived for their community and God. In today’s show, Phil+Diane and Brook+Elizabeth talk about three key elements to living a life counter to our culture and our natural desires. Enjoy!

Three Things to Live Beyond Ourselves:

    1) Hospitality

    2) Generosity

    3) Service

  • We probably all have experienced a poor apology or even given one. On today’s show Phil+Diane and Brook+Elizabeth all sit down to discuss what a good apology looks like. It is so much more than the words you say or don’t say, although they are important. They unpack God’s heart for forgiveness and how it goes hand in hand with apologies. They also go through the 5 steps to apologize from the book, When Sorry Isn’t Enough by Gary Chapman and Jennifer Thomas. Enjoy!

    5 steps to an apology:

    1) Expressing Regret

    2) Accepting responsibility

    3) Making restitution

    4) Genuinely repenting

    5) Request forgiveness

  • A.J. Swoboda is back on the show today! A.J. and Brook sit down to talk and laugh about deep thoughts that are vulnerable and real. Their conversation gets into desires and how critical it is to live in a place of satisfaction in Christ. In this topic of desires, the conversation covers so many facets, from unwanted desires, practical desires, the balance of naming our desires and knowing when to die to them, how we bless our children, how we can learn from those closest to us to be transformed, and how we need to see Jesus in his humanity to relate to God. Enjoy!

  • Dallas Willard said it so well when he said, “Feelings are good servants, but they are disastrous masters.” We live in the “I feel, therefore I am” culture and no longer live in truth. In today’s show, we discuss how our emotions are tools given to us by God. God values emotions and feelings, but we must have them in the right order. We discuss how parenting is a space where emotions come up often, not just for our kids but for us as parents. We go over six big emotions that arise within us and our children, and then we explore different ways to relate to these emotions. Enjoy!

    6 Big emotions:

    1) Jealousy

    2) Fear

    3) Anger

    4) Grief

    5) Guilt

    6) Anxiety

4 Things we all need as humans:

    2) Acceptance

  • Today’s show explores the question, What is God’s Heart with our capacity? Just because we are capable of something doesn’t mean we have the capacity for it. The questions we discuss in today’s show will challenge you in self-awareness to help you discover your gifts, your capacity in them, and the season in which God is asking you to use them. We dive deeper into more areas around this topic, like our insecurities, how our community can help us discover our calling, and most importantly, how our calling is not about us. Enjoy!

    4 Questions to ask yourself:
    1) Am I striving?
    2) Am I living in fear?
    3) Am I accepting my limitations and my family’s limitations?
    4) Is it Obedience?

  • We have Michael Handler, the Chief Innovation Officer at Awana, on today's show. Brook and Michael talked about becoming emotionally healthy and safe parents when this was not the model they grew up knowing. Michael reminds us that Christ is in the business of redeeming our stories and how God often uses our children in this formation process. In this conversation, you will hear about how multigenerational churches are a gift, how it's essential, to be honest about your story while honoring your parents, how our children can be a mirror to help us gain understanding, how hurt can become our identity, how we can give our children safety even if we never experienced it and how when we bring our children safety God can use it to provide us with the safety we may not have received. Enjoy!

  • How long has it been since someone- anyone- poured into you?

In 2023, over 600 mothers gathered together to learn, to worship, to grow, to encourage, and to be encouraged. We are still in awe of what God did!

The Spirit moved, the Father spoke, and Jesus healed. It was so incredible that we can’t wait to do it again!

We want to invite you to join us October 3rd - 5th, 2024, for a three-day retreat designed to pour into you.

We know the task of motherhood is both beautiful and hard, life giving and exhausting, and we want to create a space for the Spirit to refresh you on your journey.

We will press into how motherhood gently leads us to spiritual formation, how relationships are essential for the journey, and how our connection with God spills over to our connection with our families.

Come to where we live, in Bend, Oregon… a place of startling beauty, a place to come away from it all.

Come with your best friend, your sister, your mom— come together, or come alone.

This is a retreat for any stage of motherhood you find yourself in… from mothers of infants to grandmothers and women who hope to be mothers someday. There will be something for all of you! We all need each other!

We truly believe that the greatest gift you can give your children, young and old, is your transforming self.

It was Dallas Willard who said, “If you don’t come apart for a while, you’ll come apart after a while.”

So come! Come apart for a while with us. Come, planning to be surprised by God, to find in Him the delight your soul craves.

What does conflict bring up internally for us and What do we do when we are overwhelmed with the feelings that surround conflict? We not only take a deep dive into what we feel when conflict arises but also how to see others in the conflict and how it affects them. When we interact with each of our relationships we are not just interacting with the person, but also with their story and their woundings. We hope today’s show helps you get a little more curious, have a little more compassion, and bring in a little more calm. Enjoy!

3 Ways people often handle or respond to conflict:

    1) Attack

    2) Ignore

    3) Manage

    3 Things to ask yourself:

  • Today we are covering the topic of one of the eight primary emotions, anger. Anger reveals what matters to us- both good and not good. Anger becomes a warning signal, compelling humble people to look inside to identify what emotion they are experiencing and why. Fear? Hurt? Sadness? Resentment? Anger is possibly the most important feeling we experience as emotional and spiritual beings because it is the first step to authentic living. It shows our yearnings and hunger for life. We will also cover five ways to start working on being aware of your anger and how to live in the power of the Spirit. Enjoy!

  • When we teach our children to accept the word no, we give them a gift to help them as they mature into adulthood. On today’s show, Phil, Diane, Brook, and Elizabeth share some recent events where teaching the word no has proven challenging and has also provided a ton of fruit in their family. Join us today as they unpack the stories and lean into how God teaches us to accept the word no, how welcoming the word no brings contentment in life, and how we can give our children a no without breaking their spirit. Enjoy!

    3 Dont’s:

    1. Don’t be avoidant, if you ignore these conversations it won’t help

    2. Don’t be dismissive, sometimes you have to slow way down to be fully present 3. Don’t be snarky or sarcastic, it’s belittling

    3 Do’s:

    1. Do put on compassion, you don’t have to feel it, put it on like clothes

    2. Do listen and reflect back, it’s powerful! “I hear you saying...Do I have that right?” Go into it with curiosity

    3. Do practice humility, be open

  • Today, we discuss all things digital. How does technology form us? How does technology influence our children? What is our responsibility? The primary thing technology does is change our minds, and God invites us into the renewal of our minds. If it feels hard not to be conformed to the culture around you, you are not alone. On the show today, Brook and Elizabeth share what a digital rule of life is and what their digital rule of life looks like in their home. We have some tools that we hope are helpful as you figure out what guardrails you and your family need.

  • In today’s show, we have Diane, Elizabeth, and Sally Lemos Lpc sharing a conversation about Christmas and all the expectations and pressures that can come up. So often, we strive to do everything, but do we know why we are doing everything? Is it to perform for others or even to prove something to ourselves? It’s so easy to make Christmas about what we want instead of focusing on something far more important: how we make others around us feel. We hope this conversation feels like you are sitting with Sally, Diane, and Elizabeth as they dive into some great stories of missing the mark and how it led them to ask these three helpful yet challenging questions:

    1. How do we not miss this Christmas?

    2. Who or how do I want to be?

    3. What kind of culture am I trying to create?

    Merry Christmas and Enjoy!

The first one we respond to is how to parent children who have the opposite personality as you; there is a challenge and a blessing that comes with that. Then, we discuss what repentance can look like after you have responded in anger to your kids. Listen in for some hope and helpful practices, even if you blew it. The last question for today is about how to have a conversation with your kids when someone is having a baby outside of marriage. We touch on so many common situations in parenting; there is something for every parent in this show today! Enjoy!

  • Phil+Diane and Brook+Elizabeth respond to a few great questions in today's show. First, they talk about what to do when you feel overwhelmed with the load God has given you. Do you constantly feel like you are living outside of your capacity with no margin? Secondly, they discuss how to navigate the subject of death with your kids. This can be a tough subject when your kids feel afraid and even harder when you, as a parent, have fears around death, too. Lastly, they respond to a question about fathers cultivating a vision for their family and what to do if you never had a good father to show you how to do that for your family. This episode has loads of hope to share! Enjoy!

  • Anger is a part of the human experience and can be unpleasant, but our anger can be a gift when we listen to what it wants to communicate. The incredible Sally Lemos, MS, LPC, is on the podcast again today. Sally shares some helpful ways to learn to be aware of our anger before it turns into rage. We discuss storytellers, limits, how to slow down to go faster, and the unforced rhythms of grace. We give you four practical tools in today's show that will help you as you practice becoming a peaceful presence in your home. Enjoy!

    Practical tools:

    1. Notice what is happening in us
