In this week's episode, we're joined by prominent epidemiologist Prof. Sunetra Gupta from Merton College, Oxford who specialises in the evolution of pathogens including parasites, bacteria and viruses and in modelling the spread of pathogens through populations. She is also heavily involved in the development of vaccines to control their spread. She has been an outspoken critic of the British government's approach to tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, and is here to discuss the concept of pandemic disease in general as well as lessons we have learnt from COVID and how we can improve our response to pathogenic outbreaks in future.
Prof. Gupta is currently fostering a collaborative effort to gain insights into the collateral effects of COVID-19 control measures globally and gathering ideas for how we can better approach pandemics in future. In this episode we are joined by guest speak Max Shaw - a final year medical student reading at the University of Bristol. The discussion varied subjects from causes of mental health, the role social media and philosophy plays in this speciality, and the association of whether one’s mental health is exclusively a cause and effect or both? Understand how a sock analogy can be used in this context, and top tips for how a student may begin to look after their mental health. The team found Max to be a charismatic advocate for mental health and a listener can hear throughout this episode the passion and interest that all parties have for mental health alongside the support that can be offered.
