  • Episode 419 - Unlocking Your Back Catalog - The Art of Podcast Playlists

Leveraging playlists to organize your podcast’s back catalog is a powerful strategy for helping listeners quickly find content that matches their interests-especially when you have a large library of episodes. Playlists group similar topics, themes, or guest types, making your podcast more accessible and binge-worthy.

Where to Create and Share Podcast Playlists

Beyond YouTube and Spotify, consider these platforms:

Podbean: Allows for both audio and video playlists, integrating with your main podcast feed and website

Vimeo: Great for high-quality video podcast playlists with customization options

Dailymotion: Supports easy video uploads and playlist creation for a diverse audience

Twitch: Ideal for live and pre-recorded podcast content, with playlist-like collections for episodes

Wistia & SproutVideo: Offer advanced playlist features and analytics for both short and long-form video episodes1.

Listen Later (by Listen Notes): Lets you curate podcast episode playlists and provides an RSS feed that listeners can add to any podcast app, making it easy to share themed collections

Acast, Buzzsprout, Podomatic: Many podcast hosting platforms offer playlist or episode grouping features, plus embeddable web players for your site

    Where to Promote Your Playlists

Podcast Show Notes: Include direct links to playlists in your episode notes so listeners can easily find related content

Your Podcast Website or Blog: Create a dedicated “Playlists” or “Start Here” section, and embed playlist players for easy navigation

Social Media: Promote playlists on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X (formerly Twitter) with engaging visuals, episode highlights, and direct links

Email Newsletters: Feature playlists in your regular emails to subscribers, highlighting new or themed collections.

Podcast Directories: Some directories (like Apple Podcasts and Listen Notes) allow you to create and share curated lists or collections

Community Groups: Share playlists in relevant online communities, forums, or groups where your target audience gathers.

By creating and promoting playlists across multiple platforms like Podbean, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Listen Later, and your own website, you make it easier for listeners to discover and enjoy your content. Promote these playlists in your show notes, on your website, and across social media to maximize reach and listener engagement

  • An Easy Way to Resurface Past Podcast Episodes Buried in the Past - Daily Dave - Podcast Tips

As your library of past episodes grows over time, great episodes, content and conversations with past guests get buried in a back catalog that many new listeners may never discover. So how do we keep our back catalog alive for newer audiences?

You can create a curated playlist of like content, you can design an online magazine of themed content, you can add a link to your show notes highlighting a past episode or you can do what I just did - check out the episode next to this one in your list of episodes, look at the episode number and compare that episode number to the other numerical episode numbers on your screen - what do you see?

I took the single best episode from all of my content and moved it up the list from the past by simply changing the date - an episode from 2 years ago is now right up at the top of the list with all the other recent episodes - I didn't upload a duplicate episode, I simply changed the release date thus mainitaining my listener stat history over the past 2 years and made this episode more visible to new listeners instead of leaving this buried in the past.

At any time, I can push this episode back to where it was originally released on 5/5/2023

So, if you have a great episode or an episode that didn't perform as well as you had hoped, try bringing that episode back from the past to see how your new listeners respond.

Play with your back catalog - your audience would love to hear something new that once was old - try it and let me know the results!

  • Episode 415 - Live Podcasting, is it Just a Fad, A Flashback, or the Future of Podcasting

Why Live Podcasting Is Captivating (Even for On-Demand Fans)

    Real-Time Audience Interaction

Live podcasting lets you engage with your audience as the show happens. Listeners can ask questions, offer feedback, and even steer the conversation in real time, creating a dynamic, two-way experience

This immediate feedback loop isn’t possible with traditional, pre-recorded podcasts. It fosters a sense of community and makes listeners feel truly seen and heard

    Community Building and Shared Experience

While on-demand listening is solitary, live podcasting creates a collective event. Fans gather at the same time, interact in chat, and share the excitement of being part of something unfolding in the moment

This “appointment listening” can actually strengthen loyalty, as listeners bond with each other and the host over a shared experience

    Enhanced Engagement and Authenticity

Live shows are unpredictable and spontaneous. That energy—laughter, surprises, even mistakes—can make for compelling, authentic content that stands out in a world full of heavily edited audio

The adrenaline of performing live often brings out the best in hosts, sharpening their skills and boosting their confidence

    Unique Content Opportunities

Live podcasting is perfect for big announcements, special events, or timely discussions—think election night coverage, Q&A sessions, or live interviews with breaking news

It also opens the door to multimedia integration, such as live video, real-time polls, and even VR/AR experiences, making your show more interactive and innovative

    Revenue and Brand Growth

Live events can be monetized through ticket sales, exclusive access, sponsorships, or merchandise drops. They also help elevate your brand, adding credibility and attracting new listeners who crave interactive experiencesAddressing the “But Isn’t This Just Radio?” Argument

Yes, live podcasting shares DNA with radio, but it’s fundamentally different in its flexibility, interactivity, and the power it gives creators. You’re not bound by station formats or commercial breaks.

Unlike radio, live podcasts can be repurposed—record the live show, edit it, and release it as an on-demand episode for your regular audience

The tools and platforms available now (live chat, video, analytics, audience polls) offer a level of engagement and data-driven customization that old-school radio never could

Is Live Podcasting for Everyone? Not necessarily. The traditional, on-demand model isn’t going anywhere—most listeners still prefer it for multitasking and convenience. But live podcasting offers a unique, high-engagement layer for those who want to deepen their connection with their audience, experiment with new formats, or create buzz around special moments.Final Challenge

If you value community, crave real-time feedback, or want to create unforgettable, interactive experiences for your listeners, live podcasting is worth a try. It’s not about replacing on-demand episodes—it’s about adding a new dimension to your podcasting toolkit. You might just find that the energy, authenticity, and connection of live shows bring a whole new level of excitement to your work

  • Episode 414 - Skate to Where the Podcasting Puck Is Going - The Future of Podcasting

In this forward-looking episode, we explore where podcasting is headed, the big ideas shaping its future, and how creators can position themselves to benefit as early adopters. Framing our conversation is Wayne Gretzky’s iconic advice: “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been”

We’ll discuss how podcasters can anticipate the next wave, not just follow the crowd, and carve out unique opportunities in the evolving landscape.

Wayne Gretzky famously said, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been”

This mindset is crucial for podcasters who want to thrive in a rapidly changing industry. Instead of simply reacting to current trends, successful creators look ahead, anticipate shifts, and position themselves at the forefront of innovation

Wayne Gretzky’s Wisdom: Anticipating the Next MoveBig Ideas Shaping the Future of Podcasting

    Video Podcasting & Multi-Channel Content
Video is becoming central, with platforms like YouTube and Spotify investing heavily in video podcasts. Creators who embrace video (and its analytics) will have deeper audience engagement and more promotional opportunities

    AI and Automation
AI-driven tools are transforming editing, transcription, and even content creation. These advancements lower barriers to entry and free up creators to focus on storytelling and community-building

    Interactive and Always-On Content
The rise of interactive podcasts—where listeners can ask questions or influence the show—and always-on formats are making podcasts more engaging and community-driven

    Niche Communities and Direct Monetization
Smaller, focused podcasts are thriving through direct patronage, memberships, and community-building, rather than chasing mass-market appeal

    Format Innovation and Hybrid Shows
Hybrid formats (mixing narrative, documentary, and interviews) are gaining traction, allowing creators to stand out and deliver richer experiences

How to Get Ahead: Applying the Gretzky Principle

    Adopt Early, But Thoughtfully

  • Episode 412 - 4 Business Principles Every Podcaster Should Apply Whether Your Podcast is a Hobby or a Business

4 Business Principles Every Podcaster Should Apply

Loving your podcast as a hobby is essential for long-term motivation, but treating it like a business is what elevates your show’s impact, reach, and potential for growth. Here are four foundational business principles that translate seamlessly to podcasting, helping you enjoy the creative process while building a sustainable, professional operation:

Define Your Purpose and Target Audience

Every successful business starts with a clear purpose and a well-defined target market. For podcasters, this means knowing why you’re podcasting (educate, entertain, inspire) and who you’re speaking to. This clarity guides your content, marketing, and growth strategies, ensuring your episodes resonate and build loyalty

    Consistency and Professionalism

Businesses thrive on reliability. For podcasts, this means sticking to a regular publishing schedule and maintaining high production standards. Consistency builds trust and anticipation with your audience, while professionalism (from audio quality to episode structure) sets you apart in a crowded space

    Strategic Content Planning and Organization

Just as businesses plan their products and services, podcasters should plan content in advance. This includes outlining episodes, preparing interview questions, and scheduling releases. Using organizational tools (like calendars and to-do lists) helps manage multiple tasks and ensures you deliver value with every episode

    Marketing and Monetization Mindset

Treating your podcast like a business means actively promoting it and exploring monetization opportunities. Develop a marketing strategy using social media, collaborations, and guest appearances to grow your audience. Once you have a loyal listener base, consider sponsorships, affiliate marketing, or premium content to generate revenue and reinvest in your show

“Building a successful podcast business takes time and consistency. Stick to a regular publishing schedule, continuously improve your content, and be patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with dedication and hard work, you can turn your podcast into a profitable business.”

By blending your passion for podcasting with these business basics, you can love your show as a creative outlet while building it into something that lasts and grows.

  • Episode 410 - Beyond the Mic - Branding, The Importance of Consistent Podcast Art

Podcast artwork plays a vital role in attracting listeners and visually representing your show. Here’s a breakdown of the different types of podcast artwork, best practices, and common pitfalls to avoid:Types of Podcast Artwork

    Show Artwork:

Represents the entire podcast and is displayed across platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and directories.

Typically includes the podcast name, logo, and a visual theme that reflects the show's identity

    Episode Artwork:

Specific to individual episodes, often featuring guest names, topics, or unique visuals tied to that episode.

Adds a personalized touch and helps episodes stand out in feeds

Example: A travel podcast might use location-specific imagery for each episode.

    Chapter Artwork:

Used within episodes to visually represent different segments or chapters.

Common in podcasts with detailed narratives or educational content

    Other Forms:

Season Artwork: Represents a specific season of the podcast, distinct from the overall show artwork.

Promotional Artwork: Designed for social media posts, ads, or merchandise.

Best Practices for Quality Podcast Artwork

    Follow Technical Specifications:

Use dimensions of 3000 x 3000 pixels (72 dpi) for show art to ensure compatibility across platforms

Save files in JPG or PNG format with RGB colorspace

    Design for Versatility:

Ensure artwork looks good at various sizes, from thumbnails to large displays4.

Test designs against dark mode backgrounds for visibility

    Keep It Simple and Legible:

Avoid clutter; limit text to five to seven words for readability

Use sans-serif fonts for clarity on smaller screens

    Use High-Quality Images:

Opt for high-resolution visuals to avoid pixelation

    Incorporate vector graphics for scalability

    Leverage Color Psychology:

Choose colors that evoke emotions tied to your podcast’s theme (e.g., warm tones for positivity)

    Maintain Branding Consistency:

Use consistent fonts, colors, and imagery across all artwork forms to strengthen brand identity

    Experiment with AI Tools:

AI can generate unique episode-specific art quickly by analyzing themes and tonesWhat to Avoid

    Overused Imagery:

Avoid generic icons like microphones or headphones unless directly relevant to your podcast’s topic

    Poor Quality Visuals:

Steer clear of blurry, pixelated, or mismatched images

    Excessive Text:

Too much text can overwhelm the design and reduce readability

    Explicit Content:

Do not include profanity, nudity, or references to illegal activities in artwork as it violates platform guidelines

    Ignoring Platform Requirements:

Ensure compliance with Apple Podcasts’ rules (e.g., no placeholder images or Apple logos)

By adhering to these guidelines and avoiding common mistakes, podcasters can create compelling artwork that enhances their show’s appeal and professionalism!https://podcasters.apple.com/support/866-promotional-artwork

  • Episode 408 - The Forgotten History of Video Podcasting and Its Comeback Story

The history of video podcasting via RSS feeds demonstrates that while video in podcasting is currently resurging, it is not a new concept. Here's an overview of its origins and the current resurgence:Early History of Video Podcasting

RSS Enclosures and Early Experiments (2000): The concept of attaching media files, including video, to RSS feeds was proposed in 2000 by Tristan Louis and implemented by Dave Winer. Winer introduced the "enclosure" element in RSS 0.92, allowing media files to be syndicated. This innovation laid the groundwork for both audio and video podcasting

First Video Podcasts (2003): The first known serial video podcast, Dead End Days, was released in 2003. It showcased the potential for distributing video content episodically via RSS feeds

Technical Evolution: Early tools like iPodderX (later renamed Transistr) enabled users to access podcasts with graphical interfaces, making it easier to consume both audio and video content. However, video podcasting remained niche due to technical limitations like slow internet speeds and low-quality video playback

    Resurgence of Video Podcasting

    Current Trends (2024–2025):

Platforms like YouTube, Spotify, and TikTok have driven the adoption of video podcasting by integrating video capabilities directly into their ecosystems. YouTube's dedicated podcast section and Spotify's support for video uploads have made video podcasting a mainstream format

Enhanced audience engagement is a key driver. Video allows for visual storytelling, fosters deeper connections through non-verbal cues like facial expressions, and creates a more immersive experience

Monetization opportunities have expanded with video, as creators can leverage ads, sponsorships, and premium content on platforms optimized for visual media

    Shifts in Content Creation:

In contrast to earlier static formats, modern video podcasts often include dynamic elements like B-roll footage and on-screen graphics. Short-form clips optimized for platforms like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts have also become popular for promotional purposes

Video podcasting has evolved significantly since its early days in the 2000s when it was pioneered alongside audio podcasting via RSS feeds. While the medium faced initial challenges due to technological constraints, its resurgence today is fueled by advancements in internet speeds, platform support, and audience demand for visually engaging content. This resurgence underscores that while video podcasting feels innovative now, it is deeply rooted in the foundational history of podcasting.

Record a video of yourself reading and talking, then, the challenge is to:

    - listen to your recording playback without watching the screen, just listen, what do you hear yourself doing?

    - watch the video playback with the sound off - what do you see?

    - grab a transcription of the words you said - what can you clean up when you speak? Crutch words, are you an umh machine? Too many tangents?

Take one thing that you noticed that you can improve on, address that one thing and make a positive change, then repeat this process again, and agan, and... again - keep improving everytime you do this and your audience will notice!

Next episode features Sani from PodPacer.com - a cool tool for podcasters and a free "Roast My Show" AI tool - if you are nervous about roasting your own show, roast mine!

The creator of this process is Vinh Giang - here is a video of Vinh teaching this process which inspired this episode

  • Episode 404 - CO-HOST - Cassian Bellino - Biblically Speaking Podcast, and an Impressive List of Tools That Can Help Your Podcast

    Meet the Founder, Cassian Bellino

When I felt the pull to start the Biblically Speaking podcast, it wasn’t a dramatic revelation, but a persistent nudge. Over the years, I had countless conversations about faith—what began as casual discussions often grew into deeper reflections.
I realized that people asked the same questions I once asked, wrestled with similar doubts, and shared insights that resonated with me. I realized I wasn’t just interested in theology—I was driven by it, needing a space to unpack and connect with others around the questions that kept me up at night.

With every conversation and every page of Scripture studied, the Bible became clearer, simpler, and, most importantly, transformative. Now, through hundreds of hours of interviews and insights from some of the world’s most respected scholars, Biblically Speaking exists to make the Bible understandable, approachable, and powerfully relevant to everyday life. It’s been a journey of learning, one that has completely changed me—and I’m here to share it with you.Biblically Speaking - The Bible has been a bestseller for millennia, yet learning about Christianity can feel daunting. I felt the same way. So, as I asked questions, I hit "Record." Biblically Speaking is for curious Christians seeking clear answers to big Bible questions.

Each episode unpacks Scripture with theologians, breaking down passages, parables, and prophecies to make the Bible relatable and easy to understand. If you're looking to grow in faith with real insights and a fresh perspective, this podcast is your guide to understanding God's Word simply and meaningfully.
