In a heart-to-heart chat, our host Marianne Bailey and her guest, the ever-inspiring Debbie Weiss, author of "Available As Is: A Midlife Widow’s Search for Love" take us on a journey through the world of dating after 50, all from a woman's viewpoint. They open up about the rollercoaster of emotions and experiences that come with stepping back into the dating game, especially after a significant loss. For Debbie, this new chapter began after the devastating loss of her dear George to cancer.
They go on to share that grief isn't always tied to the loss of a loved one through death. Sometimes, it's the end of a relationship, like a divorce, that can leave a deep emotional scar. The aftermath of such life-changing events can be just as heart-wrenching, and the thought of dating again can seem like a mountain to climb.
Navigating the maze of dating apps is another topic they delve into. They laugh about the challenges of trying to decode the true meaning behind people's words on these platforms. The world of online dating can often feel like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces, making the quest for a compatible partner all the more adventurous.
Wrapping up their enlightening conversation, they discuss alternatives to the traditional dating apps. They highlight platforms like meetup.com, where you can dive into activities you love while also meeting people who share your interests. They cheerfully remind us of the importance of staying active and following our passions, as it could lead us to stumble upon a partner who truly understands and appreciates us.

Welcome back to another episode of The HIP Senior Podcast, where we dive into the deep end of life after 50, with a rubber duckie of humor for good measure. Our host, Marianne Bailey, is joined by Turner Grant, author of "To Venus and Back, One Man's Quest to Rediscover Love." If that title doesn't scream 'romantic escapade', we don't know what does. Turner's here to share his experiences with the wild world of online dating, a topic that Marianne, as a newly single woman, is keen to explore.
Turner's journey into the realm of online dating was less of a gentle nudge and more of a full-on cannonball dive. After two years of grieving the loss of his wife and focusing on his family, he was 'encouraged' (or, more accurately, catapulted) into the digital dating scene by his mother-in-law and a persuasive neighbor. The promise of online dating, with its easy access to potential partners, seemed enticing. However, Turner soon discovered that swiping for love was more like trying to find a needle in a haystack... a haystack full of left swipes.
Marianne and Turner also discussed the various dating apps available, with a particular focus on the ones that offer free services. Marianne, with her dreams of a romantic grocery store encounter thwarted by home delivery, is considering giving online dating a shot. However, she's quickly learning that while setting up a profile might be easy, finding a genuine connection is a whole different ball game.
The conversation took a turn towards the effectiveness of different dating apps for the 50 and above demographic. Bumble and Match, once the reigning champions, seem to have lost their luster. But fear not, because Tinder, the rebel of the dating app world, might just be the place for those of us with a few more miles on the clock. So, buckle up, because as Turner's story shows, the road to love might be a wild ride, but it's one heck of a story to tell!
In the end, Marianne and Turner's humorous discussion about online dating and apps serves as a reminder that finding love, especially in the digital age, can be an adventure. Whether you're swiping left so much your thumb cramps, or you're surprised to find that Tinder might be the place for those 50 and above, the journey to love is always worth it. So, keep swiping, keep laughing, and remember, it's never too late to find love.

Welcome to another episode of The HIP Senior Podcast with your host, Marianne Bailey. Today, we have a special guest joining us - Ryan Herd. Ryan is not just the founder and CEO of his own business, but he's also an author and a speaker for Ted Talks. We're thrilled to have him on the show today to discuss the intersection of technology and senior care.
Ryan has an extensive background in smart home technology, having been in the field for the last 30 years. He's been involved in this industry even before terms like 'Smart Home' and 'IoT' became mainstream. His expertise in the field led him to write a book titled "Join the Smart Home Revolution". In his TED talk, he discussed how smart technology can help us age in place, emphasizing the idea that technology should work for us as humans, rather than just being a gadget.
The inception of his company, Caregiver Smart Solutions, was born out of a personal necessity. When his father was undergoing chemotherapy treatments, Ryan found himself constantly worried about whether his father was taking his medication, eating properly, and moving around. He realized there was a gap in the market for a solution that could provide this kind of information and give peace of mind to those who can't always be there for their loved ones. This led to the creation of Caregiver Smart Solutions, a company dedicated to using technology to enhance the care and safety of seniors.
In today's episode, we'll delve deeper into the topic of technology and its role in preventing common issues faced by seniors. Ryan's insights promise to be enlightening for anyone interested in senior care, technology, or both. Stay tuned for an engaging and informative discussion.

In the HIP Senior Podcast, Marianne hosts Terri Mongait, the founder of Begin Again Coaching Strategies and owner of Begin Again Ranch, a six-acre property located in Sedalia, Colorado. The ranch, initially in California, was moved to its current location to provide a more private and personal environment to Mongait's clients. The premise of her work involves partnering with horses to facilitate breakthroughs for her clients in a safe, uninterrupted setting.
Terri's clientele is diverse, ranging from business owners to couples struggling with communication or grappling with the "empty nest" syndrome. She explains that many times, her clients aren't sure why they're stuck in their personal or professional life. By partnering with horses, she helps them unravel their stories, identify what is holding them back, and guide them toward embracing their true selves.
Terri further highlights how her approach can also be beneficial for single individuals, particularly those dealing with significant life changes such as their children leaving home or going through a divorce. She explains the challenge of self-discovery and self-relationship as people transition from defined roles like being a parent or a spouse, to living alone. The goal is to help clients rediscover their identities before these life changes and to understand who they're meant to be.
Lastly, Terri emphasizes the importance of understanding personal triggers and reactions. She uses the example of a seemingly innocent comment about a blouse triggering an intense reaction due to childhood experiences. Terri's work with her clients and horses aims to address these deep-seated issues, understand their origins, and ultimately help her clients move forward with a better understanding of themselves.

In this episode of TheHIPSenior Podcast, we welcome Kay Coghlan, owner and founder of Facilitator on Fire, and host of the podcast "From One Caregiver to Another." A passionate advocate for family caregivers, Kay aims to help those with caregiving responsibilities maintain their own identities and find the right balance between work and caregiving.
Kay's background as a business coach for solopreneurs and small business leaders may not immediately seem related to her role as a family caregiver advocate. However, she sees many parallels between running a business and managing caregiving responsibilities, emphasizing the need for organization, delegation, and scheduling in both domains.
By introducing the concept of the "care pool," Kay encourages caregivers to view themselves as managers rather than sole providers of care. This mindset shift can help family caregivers recognize the importance of seeking assistance and asserting their own boundaries when faced with overwhelming demands.
As many caregivers struggle to establish and maintain boundaries, the conversation in this episode highlights the importance of remembering that caregivers are people first. By prioritizing their own needs and desires alongside their caregiving duties, caregivers can maintain a healthy balance and avoid burnout.
Join us for this insightful conversation with Kay Coghlan, and learn how to better navigate the challenges of caregiving while preserving your own identity and well-being. You'll discover practical strategies for managing the "care pool" and tips for setting boundaries that empower caregivers to lead fulfilling lives beyond their caregiving roles.

Josh Pettit's family has a heartwarming story of lifelong love and companionship. Bob and Betty, high school sweethearts from Buffalo, New York, met as fifth-graders and began dating in 1955. Betty became a devoted stay-at-home mom to their three sons, with Josh being the youngest, while Bob worked as a civil engineer.
After Bob's retirement, the couple decided to travel around the country and live the RV life, finally enjoying the warm sunshine in Florida. But Betty's health soon took a turn for the worse. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery, followed by the discovery of kidney cancer, which required the removal of one-third of her kidneys. She also had a hip replacement and a few other medical procedures, which Josh believes may have sped up the onset of her Alzheimer's disease.
To ensure that Betty receives consistent medical care, Bob and Betty moved in with their youngest son Josh in North Carolina. It was a big change for the family, but they knew it was the right decision. Over time, they began to notice Betty's memory loss, a hallmark symptom of Alzheimer's disease. The family came together to provide the best care possible for Betty, with Josh taking on an increasingly important role in her daily care.
In this podcast, Josh shares with us the journey of caring for his mother Betty, including the challenges and joys of having his parents living with him, and how they manage to provide daily care for Betty. It's a touching story of love, family, and dedication to a loved one in need. Click the play button above to listen to the full podcast and learn more about their heartwarming journey.
