In this first episode, host Gerri Willis looks at how the outbreak of the Civil War changed the lives of women: their status, altered their roles and gave them new opportunities in the process. We will hear about the various reasons that drove them to participate in the war: political pride for the side they were on, financial reasons and slaves trying to end slavery. Also, outside of those direct roles in the conflict, we discuss how they began having a larger role running plantations and northern businesses when their husbands and sons went off to war.
