  • Rethink everything you thought you knew about being a fearless man. Moreover, reimagine why being fearless is so important not just for how we show up in the world, but for how we can be the best fathers, too. In this episode, Dave Novak, author of Fearless Men, explains what it means to be fearless and how fearlessness leads to us becoming true men, not just real men. In this wide-ranging conversation, Dave shares powerful stories of men who have done the hard work to face their struggles and show up more authentically in their lives and families. In so doing, Dave reveals the mindsets and actions that will enable us to conquer the struggles, insecurities, and pressures that are threatening our souls.

  • Brett and Perry talk about how to handle the disappointment that comes from unmet expectations as they debrief their summer adventures and catch up on key happenings with their families. Things don't always go according to plan, especially when travel and the idiosyncracies of teenage kids are involved. Yet, how we help our kids navigate disappointment is an important role of fathers. We trust that you'll be able to relate to the stories Brett and Perry share in this episode and take heart from the realization that you're not the only one to experience setbacks with your kids despite having the best of intentions.

  • Brett and Perry, both of whom live in areas deeply impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Helene, share their experiences of the storm itself, the tragedy they've witnessed first-hand, and their families' efforts to help those in need. They then shift the conversation to an internal conflict Perry is wrestling with regarding a work opportunity for his son JP. As fathers, how do we balance prudence and wisdom with expanding our comfort zones to allow our sons to grow into men? In this episode, we tackle some heavy issues with an eye toward setting a good example for our kids, being the hands and feet of Jesus, and recognizing that ultimately He is in control and it's on us to walk by faith.

  • In this final episode of our 3-part series on legacy, we're joined by Dan Davis, founder of Animate Mentoring, to discuss aspects of our lineage and character that we don't want to carry forward in our families and that we don't want to be part of our legacy moving forward. Dan explains that for all the good a person may exhibit, there's always a shadow side that must be dealt with as well. How can we break free from that shadow and turn it to light? If there are negative through-lines going back generations in our family, how can we say "this stops with me" and chart a different path for moving forward? Legacies are complicated, as we've discussed in previous episodes, and part of crafting a legacy that we can be proud of involves coming to terms with the less-glamorous shadow side of our nature. Dan's wisdom and insight from years of counseling men from all walks of life add important color to our conversation about legacy and will help you walk out the sometimes challenging task of leaving behind the harmful in pursuit of a meaningful, lasting legacy.

    About Our Guest

Dan Davis is the founder and lead mentor at Animate Mentoring, which guides individuals and families so they can navigate life's transitions intentionally with wisdom and courage. After three decades of leading in the professional camping industry, Dan developed a keen sense of how important the relationship with a trusted mentor is. He saw firsthand how our modern society neglects mentoring through life’s most significant transitions, leaving many people lost and isolated. In 2020, Dan took a leap and launched Animate Mentoring so he and other team members can serve as guides through the stages of adolescence, parenthood, and mid-life passage, and provide direction and support so relationships can flourish as life changes over time.

  • Brett and Perry continue their discussion about Legacy by exploring the idea that we should begin something meaningful now that won't be completed in our lifetime. It opens up a conversation about King David and his son, King Solomon, and leads to a broader conversation about how to equip our kids to be better than we are in key areas. As we strive to leave a positive legacy for future generations, we trust that Part 2 of this Legacy series will challenge, motivate, and encourage you on your fatherhood journey.

  • Legacies are complicated. We all leave one, whether good or bad. For those of us trying to leave an impactful, positive legacy in our families, how should we set about doing that? How much control do we really have over the ripple effect of our actions today on future generations? What does the Word teach us about legacy, and how does our time on Earth fit into God's eternal plans?

It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of fatherhood and lose sight of the big picture. While our lives are but a vapor, according to the apostle James, they continue on through our kids, who are a big part of our legacy (Psalm 127). This episode is Part 1 of a series on "Legacy" where Brett and Perry begin to unpack important themes around legacy that may shift the way we think about our responsibilities as fathers in terms of our impact after we're gone. Our legacy matters, but perhaps not in the way you'd expect.

  • Music is the soundtrack to our lives, as Manny Montilla (aka Manny Digital) says in this episode of The Faithful Fatherhood Podcast. Good music can add color and flavor to our lives, provide commonality within a family, and enrich the human experience in meaningful ways. But what if the language and messaging in that music is questionable, explicit, or downright offensive? Should our kids be exposed to it? What is our role as father in filtering what our kids listen to? More broadly, how can we raise our kids to make life-giving choices on their own when it comes to the media they consume? These are questions without easy answers, but Manny sheds light on them as he shares a unique perspective having grown up around hip-hop culture in the Bronx and now raising kids who have an affinity for that same music while trying to balance faith and positive values.

    About Our Guest

Manny "Digital" made his bones in The Bronx, NY. A son of Dominican immigrants, he grew up observing the pitfalls of his BX environment and carefully applied the lessons he picked up to set himself up for a better outcome. One of those lessons came from his personal experience as part of a broken home. He knew early on the importance of a father's presence and how setting clear expectations with his eventual children would be the most impactful element of building his family. Manny is an AdTech advisor at B7 media, co-hosts The Father Hoods Podcast, and is co-founder of FlyDads, an Ecommerce brand creating fashionable accessories for dad’s journey through fatherhood.

  • As fathers, we desire to love our kids fully and unconditionally. If you're a father to adopted kids, is the desire of your heart any different? Of course not. But adoption does present unique challenges. As adoptive fathers, we need to understand those challenges and how to connect with our kids amid the unique nature of the adoptive parent-child relationship. In this episode we talk with Allison Douglas, Resource Center Program Director at Harmony Family Center, about her experience both professionally and as a parent of four adopted kids herself. We explore the inherent trauma present in all adopted kids and what it means for adoptive fathers, the 7 Core Frameworks for Adoption, why rejection hurts so much, how to tailor your relationship with each of your adopted kids, what "good outcomes" means when it comes to raising adopted kids, and how to grow personally so that we can best handle the challenges of adoption -- all with an eye toward loving our adopted kids well. Allison shares so many profound insights during this conversation that will encourage you, give you hope, and equip you with the tools you need to love your kids even better.

  • Imagine missing out on a $1 million grand prize by fractions of a second... not once, but twice! Then imagine finally standing on top of the podium after years of hard work, only to miss out on that same $1 million grand prize because it happened to be the COVID year. How would that impact your mindset? How would that test your faith? Are we living for the riches of this world, or do we have a more eternal vision for the impact of our lives? Daniel Gil, 2020 winner of American Ninja Warrior and 7-time Finalist, joins us in this episode to share his incredible story of triumph and heartbreak. His perspective on life and competition is a breath of fresh air, and the lessons learned that he shares from over a decade as a professional athlete will empower us all to be better men and fathers. A self-proclaimed Kingdom Ninja, Daniel reminds us that we're all called to live a life that is set apart. The stories and mindsets that he shares empower us to do just that.

    About Our Guest

Growing up, he spent a lot of time outdoors, climbing trees and playing sports. In 2015 he began his rookie year competing on season 7 of American Ninja Warrior and thus his journey to becoming one of the top athletes on the show. Daniel's success as an athlete has given him an opportunity to use his platform as a motivational speaker to help inspire people to get back up when they inevitably fall or fail, overcome the obstacles they will face in life, and never stop pursuing their God-given dreams.

  • Happiness. It sounds so enticing, so desirable. We want more happiness in our own lives, and we want our kids to be happy, too. Yet, joy isn't always the first emotion that comes to mind when we think about fatherhood. Being a father is challenging, and sometimes happiness gets lost in the day-to-day stress and challenge of fatherhood. According to Dr. Mark Leonard, founder of The Happiness Breakthrough, we are all capable of achieving more happiness -- and indeed, the formula for a happiness breakthrough is relatively simple. Simple doesn't necessarily mean easy, however. So join us in this wide-reaching conversation as Dr. Leonard walks us through the keys to happiness, why it matters in our fathering, and how to help our kids grow in joy as well.

    About Our Guest

Dr. Mark Leonard has been an entrepreneur and business owner for over 25 years, so you can be sure he has his share of worries, sleepless nights, and setbacks. For the past 20 years, Dr. Leonard has studied why some people are so successful, while others seem to struggle. As part of his quest, he earned a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University where he gained expertise in helping companies and their leaders achieve their sales and operational goals. That is his focus at The Happiness Breakthrough, where he has been blessed to coach thousands of business owners, leaders, entrepreneurs, and students to higher levels of success. • It seems like a pretty simple idea: A father should desire to give good gifts to his kids. Jesus said as much in Matthew 7:9-11. Yet, it's not always that easy. There are some deeper issues here. Should we give our kids every "good gift" they ask for? Does our Heavenly Father actually give us everything we ask for, as scripture suggests? What should our heart position be toward our kids when they haven't earned the gifts they're asking for? What is the interplay between discipline and freedom, and how does it line up with what Jesus discloses about the heart of a father in these profound verses from his Sermon on the Mount?

In this episode, Brett and Perry take a deep dive into several key verses from Matthew Chapters 6 & 7 that speak to God's heart for us, and how they translate to what our heart should be toward our own kids. We are instructed to "ask, seek, and knock" to received the blessings of our Heavenly Father. Do we believe that? And do our kids expect the same from us? There's a lot here, so buckle up and get ready to be challenged. As we're trying to be the best fathers we can be, the biblical truths discussed in this episode have the ability to move us further in that direction, if we'll internalize them.
