Welcome to the sex therapy talk you didn't know you needed! In this week's episode, Brittney and our guest Dr. Camden tackle the complex effects of purity culture, a movement that peaked in the 1990s-2000s and used shame and fear to promote abstinence until marriage. We explore the long-lasting consequences of this messaging on peoples' sexuality, faith, and relationships- and share our own stories. This episode underscores the importance of honest conversations about sexuality and encourages us to critically examine the messages we received and seek healing from the lingering effects of purity culture. Including:
The definition of purity culture vs a healthy personal sexual ethicHow effective abstinence pledges actually were according to researchThe gendered impact of the purity culture message on women and menMyths and misconceptions of purity culture that often lead to unrealistic expectationsThe need for rebuilding a healthy mind-body connection and reclaiming sexuality as a natural and positive part of life.and much more! This is a conversation for all listeners whether single or married!
Dr. Camden is a licensed clinical psychologist with nearly fifteen years of experience as a therapist. She draws on both her personal and professional experience with purity culture recovery—using psychological research, practical exercises, and therapy case studies—to help the hurting reject toxic beliefs, understand trauma and its effects, and break free from shame.
