U.S. conquest has usually happened as a result of the influence of oil and gas corporations, the same corporations that have thrown their support behind Trump. Organizing exhibitions with wildfire and flood survivors, progressing dialogues for energy democracy and the Rights of Nature, concrete victories for the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale and for Québec green spaces vital to biodiversity, as well as progress on national and local climate policy - Sierra Club Canada’s work in 2024 was connected to all of this. Despite all the political theatre, most Canadians continue to want concrete action aimed at lowering corporate oil and gas pollution and at addressing climate change.
We discuss these wins and what it will take to win in the future.We also discuss issues like the cost of living and life struggles and why systemic solutions that go after big polluters are more important than ever. Finally we look to 2025, and our plans to keep working on the above, to keep doing outdoor education, film screenings we’re organizing on Line 5 early in the new year, and building out our resources for the whole environmental movement.

We discuss food security lessons from personal experiences in the Yukon and, on an unrelated note, share the audio version of our past webinar with the Yukon Conservation Society on their Yukon South Beringia Priority Place initiative. The Priority Place spans 89,000 square kilometers between the Ogilvie Mountains to the north and Dezadeash Lake and Carcross to the south. Because it was never (or only occasionally) glaciated during the ice ages, it is home to some of the oldest landscapes in Canada and contains a variety of unique and endemic species, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
For anyone concerned about how climate change will impact our ability to feed ourselves we share some advice on how to make our food systems more resilient in the second half of today's episode. Thanks to the oil and gas CEOs behind the coming U.S. Administration tariffs might be coming soon to a Canadian economic sector near you, but likely oil and gas itself will be exempt from tariffs (no surprise there). Meanwhile an emissions cap on oil and gas corporations could save thousands of Canadian lives through air pollution reductions alone and the cap will NOT hurt Canada's oil and gas competitiveness.

We interview survivors of wildfires and floods in Canada who lost businesses, communities, or had property damaged. They are calling for the Canadian Government to enact an emissions cap on oil and gas corporations. That emissions cap is now out in draft form as of yesterday. We also get into the new policy, how it looks, how it can be strengthened, why it needs to be implemented rapidly.
The emissions cap will NOT harm our economy, nor jobs, nor grocery prices and oil and gas lobbyists do not care about you - that much is clear.
We also recently held exhibits of artefacts from climate disasters which featured testimonies from survivors calling for an emissions cap entitled Protect What We Love in both Ottawa and NYC: https://www.protectwhatwelove.ca/

Conor talks about why the emissions cap will NOT hurt Canada's economy, prosperity, nor hurt jobs with Aaron Cosbey, a development economist with 30 years of experience, and Jessica Kelly, a Senior Policy Advisor, of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). They discuss how one of the main drivers of inflation in Canada is our overdependence on oil and gas and what we can do to change that, how climate policy is not to blame for inflation, and tips for journalists covering climate policy issues and reports.
There's also a breakdown of all the problems and faulty reasoning contained in the Deloitte and S&P Global analyses of the emissions cap and calls to scrap it.

Thirteen Canadian oil and gas companies, including five of the six that make up the Pathways Alliance oil sands lobby group, are on the list of 88 big carbon polluters called out for a major share of the forested lands lost to wildfires in North America between 1986 and 2021.

We held an exhibition of wildfire and other climate artifacts at New York Climate Week in NYC on September 24, 2024. Climate survivors are also present to tell their stories. We get into that exhibit, why we need an emissions cap on wealthy oil and gas corporations, and what goes on in the heads of the public relations professionals who work for those corporations. Draft regulations for a cap on corporate oil and gas emissions have been delayed repeatedly because of oil and gas lobbying, and we are still waiting for those regulations.

Technology alone will not save us. Paris Marx joins us to discuss how the drive to grow the artificial intelligence (AI) industry without moderation could have some seriously negative consequences for the climate and how the debate on AI tends to emphasize false concerns over genuine ones (like misinformation and impacts on journalism quality). We get into how journalism is changing and the importance of public funding.
We also discuss how a lot of AI hype is being driven by some bizarre theories about the future. These theories value a few very wealthy peoples' quest for immortality over the benefit of generations of human beings (and maybe one day artificial beings) to come.

Taylor talks with Kaitlyn Trudeau about her recent research on how climate change made high temperatures at least twice as likely before the Jasper wildfire and how without the impacts of human-caused climate change the fire wouldn’t have been as severe as it was. They go over why there’s no substitute for dramatically reducing carbon emissions and how we can now tie specific events directly to climate change. They also discuss how a prescribed burn in New Mexico turned into one of the largest wildfires in state history because of unseasonal weather made more likely by climate change and what this means for dealing with fires at the local level.
For the Q&A section we answer your question: Is arson a major factor for wildfires in Canada? The answer is no, it is not a major factor. We discuss the myths around arson and chemtrails, and how climate disinformation distracts from addressing the genuine issues of climate change and environmental degradation.
