Our guest for the evening is the Norwegian painter Kristine Onsrud. Many young, figurative painters can probably relate to her art school trauma, but there are probably few who have experienced that their painting got stabbed with a pair of scissors by their so-called colleagues. This is exactly what happened to Onsrud, who eventually left the London art school to get a proper education at the Florence Academy in Italy. But the "all you do is wrong"-mentality and lack of storytelling as an integrated part of the education at FAA, finally made her apply to the Nerdrum School where she has studied since.The conversation was produced by Bork S. After studying with Odd Nerdrum in the early 2000s, Knoop devoted her time to the frescoes of Pompeii and Antique sculptures. Spending a year in Italy, she copied masterworks in public collections, and shares her experiences. She talks about the importance of androgyny, clichés - and why you should paint self-portraits. As it turns out, the white walls of «The White Sea» are soaked in racism (a lot of white people have been in the room throughout the years).A «sin of the skin» easily proven by swapping empiricism, reason and rational arguments for emotional and subjective interpretations.In Denmark, a group lead by a professor threw a cast of a former king in the harbour, protesting past slave trade. Though fired from her job, the professor is supported by art world representatives. To understand this phenomenon, Jan-Ove Tuv turns to Catherine Nixey´s book «The Darkening Age. A feminist pledge seeks to correct the gender imbalance of museums, foundations and private collections. It is backed up by an organization representing over 100 culture-related organizations. However, their «fairness» hides a core tenet of Critical Theory: objective knowledge does not exist, but is merely "a male, Eurocentric construct". In the end, Critical Theory will only amplify the core principles of Fine Art in a shared zeal to end all ideas of meritocracy.Third-wave feminism will not catapult female classical-figurative painters into accepted collections. In Social Justice rhetoric they suffer from "false consciousness" and have "internalized the male gaze".
