  • Every organization is plagued by destructive friction—the forces that make it harder, more complicated, or downright impossible to get anything done. Yet some forms of friction are incredibly useful, and leaders who attempt to improve workplace efficiency often make things even worse. Drawing from seven years of hands-on research, The Friction Project by bestselling authors Robert I. Sutton and Huggy Rao teaches readers how to become “friction fixers,” so that teams and organizations don’t squander the zeal, damage the health, and throttle the creativity and productivity of good people—or burn through cash and other precious resources.

Sutton and Rao kick off the book by unpacking how skilled friction fixers think and act like trustees of others’ time. They provide friction forensics to help readers identify where to avert and repair bad organizational friction and where to maintain and inject good friction. Then their help pyramid shows how friction fixers do their work, which ranges from reframing friction troubles they can’t fix right now so they feel less threatening to designing and repairing organizations. The heart of book digs into the causes and solutions for five of the most common and damaging friction troubles: oblivious leaders, addition sickness, broken connections, jargon monoxide, and fast and frenzied people and teams.

Sound familiar? Sutton and Rao are here to help. They wrap things up with lessons for leading your own friction project, including linking little things to big things; the power of civility, caring, and love for propelling designs and repairs; and embracing the mess that is an inevitable part of the process (while still trying to clean it up).

  • Surrender The Outcome is a leadership fable that follows the progress of a longtime basketball coach, Mick, through his traditional, transactional approach to coaching to a new refreshing, impactful, and transformational approach to life. Along the way he receives great wisdom from those closest to him.

Mick is your typical coach to start: focused on winning the next game while appearing to maintain complete control of his team. In his chase for wins, he wins some and loses some like all coaches. Regardless of the record, Mick always finishes the season frustrated and disappointed that his team couldn't squeeze out a few more wins.

Through many failures and much self-reflection, Mick moves beyond the race for wins and discovers a better way to gauge success-on the court and in life. As he begins to focus on his values outside the coaching box, Mick realizes this new approach isn't only better for his team but also for his family and personal life.

Mick's journey towards his own definition of success leads him to the realization of a powerful process that can transform the impact of all leaders regardless of their area of influence. By focusing on gaining self-awareness

  • Public speaking is difficult because you’ve never been taught the proper techniques.

Fascinated by the possibility that speech training could foster the kind of psychological well-being more commonly sought through psychiatric treatment, and intrigued by the notion that words can serve as medicine, Bowe set out to discover the origins of speech training—and to learn for himself how to speak better in public.

What would it mean for Americans to learn once again the simple art of talking to one another?

Bowe shows that learning to speak in public means more than giving a decent speech without nervousness. Learning to connect with others bestows upon us an enhanced sense of freedom, power, and belonging.

The result: an easy, humorous read that explains the subject considered by the Greeks and Romans to be the cornerstone of education: the art of connecting with others.

  • What makes a story perfect?

How do you tell the perfect story for any occasion?

Stories are a memorable and engaging way to differentiate yourself and build connections. They are integral to forming trust, creating new thinking, and even influencing decision-making. But it isn’t enough to tell a story. The way you tell a story makes a difference in the outcome for your audience. Most people aren’t natural storytellers. They see others tell stories with ease and feel they weren’t given that talent or don't have the perfect story to share.

In The Perfect Story, Karen Eber—leadership consultant, professional storyteller, and TED speaker—evolves the conversation on storytelling. She explains how to leverage the science of storytelling to create an engaging story. Without relying on complicated models or one-size-fits-all prescriptions, The Perfect Story makes storytelling accessible with practical and impactful steps for anyone to tell the perfect story for any occasion.

  • Pouring yourself into a single full-time job is the riskiest move you can make. Your parents’ advice to focus on one career path? It doesn’t work anymore, for reasons ranging from recessions to student loan debt, the gig economy, climate disasters, and a global pandemic (to name a few).

We need a dramatically different relationship with work, one that allows us to define ourselves beyond our paid labor. The answer? A Portfolio Life. An anti-hustle, pro-rest approach to work-life balance, a Portfolio Life is built on three tenets.

    1. You are more than any one role or opportunity.

    2. Diversification will help you navigate change and mitigate uncertainty.

    3. When (not if) your needs change, you can and should rebalance.

In The Portfolio Life, Harvard professor, serial entrepreneur, and self-described "human Venn diagram" Christina Wallace adapts tried-and-true practices from entrepreneurs, creatives, and successful freelancers to help you eschew the cult of ambition and experience the freedom of building the flexible, fulfilling, and sustainable life you want.

Whether you’re sick of being told your worth is inextricably tied to your work, or that setting boundaries and protecting your personal life means you aren’t “all in,” this book will walk you step-by-step through the process of designing a strategy for the long haul. Because you deserve rest, relationships, and a rewarding career — not someday, but today. After all, you only live once.

  • From social disruptions like economic recessions, pandemics and new technologies, to individual disruptions like getting married, career transitions and becoming a parent, we undergo change in transformation, both good and bad, regularly. Change is not the exception, it's the rule. On today's program, we welcome Brad Stulberg, bestselling author of The Practice of Groundedness and his new book, Master of Change: How to Excel When Everything is Changing - Including You. While we endlessly fight change, often viewing it as a threat to our stability and sense of self, we can flip the script on its head. Brad's book offers a path for embracing and even growing from life's constant instability.

Drawing on cutting edge science, ancient wisdom, and daily practice, Stulberg offers concrete principles for developing a mindset called rugged flexibility, as well as habits and practices to implement it. Along the way, listeners will learn how to be in conversation with change instead of it happening to you. The importance of expectations, why cultivating a rugged yet flexible sense of self is key to a strong identity, and how to take productive action during uncertainty. I'm so excited to welcome Brad to the show today inside another episode of the Burleson Box.

  • To most of us, learning something "the hard way" implies wasted time and effort. Good teaching, we believe, should be creatively tailored to the different learning styles of students and should use strategies that make learning easier. Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head. Drawing on recent discoveries in cognitive psychology and other disciplines, the authors offer concrete techniques for becoming more productive learners.

Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems never before encountered and drawing inferences from facts already known. New insights into how memory is encoded, consolidated, and later retrieved have led to a better understanding of how we learn. Grappling with the impediments that make learning challenging leads both to more complex mastery and better retention of what was learned.

Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive. Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly. More complex and durable learning come from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another. Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes, Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement.

On this episode of The Burleson Box, we hear from Professor Henry L. "Roddy" Roediger III, author of Make it Stick about the importance for students and teachers to know whose advice to take on how best to go about learning, what should we really be asking if we want to solve complex problems, the concept of massed practice and why our faith in it is misplaced, how learning and experience come together, how to avoid illusions of knowing, and how we can be more mindful about how mastery really works.

  • Life is full of paradoxes. How can we each express our individuality while also being a team player? How do we balance work and life? How can we improve diversity while promoting opportunities for all? How can we manage the core business while innovating for the future?

For many of us, these competing and interwoven demands are a source of conflict. Since our brains love to make either-or choices, we choose one option over the other. We deal with the uncertainty by asserting certainty.

    There's a better way.

In Both/And Thinking, Wendy Smith and Marianne Lewis help readers cope with multiple, knotted tensions at the same time. Drawing from more than twenty years of pioneering research, they provide tools and lessons for transforming these tensions into opportunities for innovation and personal growth.

Filled with practical advice and fascinating stories—including firsthand tales from IBM, LEGO, and Unilever, as well as from startups, nonprofits, and even an inn at one of the four corners of the world—Both/And Thinking will change the way you approach your most vexing problems.

  • In this episode, Dustin talks with Amy Gallo about her book, Getting Along: How to Work with Anyone (Even Difficult People).

Amy shares the 9 principles for getting along with anyone, why we must focus on what we can control and avoid wasting time trying to convince our colleagues to change; people change if they want to. Focus instead on what you can do differently.

We discuss why work relationships are so hard and whether or not they are really worth the trouble. Amy gives excellent advice on how to monitor our stress and how our minds often work against us in moments of conflict with a colleague. Listeners will discover how to use the brain science in their favor.

We don’t have to grin and bear bad behavior at work. This book shares the best ways to change our approach, improve our interactions, and even turn enemies into allies. Dig into this episode of The Burleson Box Podcast and learn how to build interpersonal resilience so that you can bounce back quicker from negative interactions and have less stress going forward.

Ozan has an exceptional track record at helping people create work that matters, especially in the face of enormous uncertainty and potential failure.

Whether you are a business leader looking to unlock the full creative potential of your employees or an individual who is ready to stop following the crowd and clear your own path, Awaken Your Genius will give you the tools. Genius isn’t for a special few. It can be cultivated.

  • Despite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable.

In this episode, Dustin talks with Christine Porath about her latest book, Mastering Community: The Surprising Ways Coming Together Moves Us from Surviving to Thriving.

Christine's research shows, “as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too.” Leaders, organizations, and managers of all stripes may recognize how to implement the cure: community and civility.

Christine and I talk about the six characteristics of companies and leaders that best build community, how to unleash your people and embrace radical candor. We share a few great book recommendations, some wonderful case studies, examples and stories from Cisco, Marriott, The Motley Fool and even the world of improv comedy at Second City.

  • In this episode, Dustin talks with Chris Bailey about his latest book, How to Calm Your Mind: Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times.

You'll discover How the analog and digital worlds affect calm and anxiety in vastly different ways. How our desire for the neurochemical dopamine eventually leads us to feel anxious and savor everyday experiences less. How the pursuit of productivity and accomplishment is more addictive than we think. How there are countless sources of hidden stress buried within our days. How conducting a “stimulation fast” can rebalance our mind to feel less anxious and calmer. And how “busyness” is as much a state of mind as it is an actual state of life

From battling work-life balance issues to developing a more expansive reservoir of energy, How to Calm Your Mind is full of tangible takeaways to overcome anxiety and live a fuller, more balanced life. Being calmer ultimately leads us to become more engaged, focused, and deliberate—while making us more productive and satisfied with our days and lives. Counterintuitive though it might sound, in an anxious world, investing in calm is not only a helpful strategy for self-care, it’s also one of the best productivity strategies around.

  • In this episode, Dustin talks with Gabriella Braun about her book, All That We Are: The Hidden Truths Behind Our Behavior at Work.

We examine how work does far more than occupy our time and provide our livelihood. It provides an outlet for our intelligence and skills. It’s part of our identity, a source of belonging and exclusion, of pleasure and pain.

Listeners will discover why the dynamics of different relationships in the workplace, giving rise to issues of power, status, equality, camaraderie and competition, touch every one of us and every part of us. Much as we may want to, we cannot leave aspects of ourselves outside the building or virtual space when we go to work.

Gabriella explains what it means to work while being human and how we can learn more about the hidden motivations that drive our behavior at work. The book will move you and awaken a new respect for your colleagues and employees. It may force a rethink of many of the attitudes you hold about others, especially those who annoy or intimidate you at work. It can help you build a workplace that is more creative, inclusive and humane, where people and their work flourish.
