    Shaykh Ubaydullah Evans is ALIM’s first Scholar-in-Residence. He converted to Islam while in high school. Upon conversion, Shaykh Ubaydullah began studying some of the foundational books of Islam under the private tutelage of local scholars while simultaneously pursuing a degree in journalism from Columbia.  

    Since then he has studied at Chicagoland’s Institute of Islamic Education (IIE), in Tarim, Yemen, and Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, where he graduated from its Shari’a program.

    Shaykh Ubaydullah also instructs with the Ta’leef Collective and the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), and Miftaah Institute.  

    As the ALIM Scholar-in-Residence, Shaykh Ubaydullah is a core instructor at the ALIM Summer Program. He teaches History of Islamic Law, Shama'il, and Aphorisms of Ibn Ata'illah along with other courses.

    Shaykh Junayed Ahmed grew up in New York and completed the memorization of the Qur’an at Darul Uloom New York. He had the opportunity to participate in multiple international Qur’an competitions after completing his memorization. Thereafter, Shaykh Junayed started his pursuit for higher learning at DUNY for and completed 4 years of studies. He was then accepted into the College of Qur’an at the Islamic University of Madinah. He is the second American graduate from the College of Qur’an at the Islamic University of Madinah and is an Ashara Qari. Shaykh Junayed currently serves as a Religious Director in Dallas.

    Mawlana Osman Fuad was born and raised in Houston and began his studies with memorizing the Quran at Masjid Bilal. Soon after completing his hifz he began studying Arabic locally while teaching hifz. He embarked on a six-year study of the Islamic sciences starting in Chicago, and then in Karachi, Pakistan. He studied under many luminaries, the most prominent being Mufti Taqi Uthmani, Mufti Rafi Uthmani, Maulana Mahmoud Ashraf amongst others. Since graduating from Darul Uloom Karachi, he returned to Houston and has been actively teaching in the community.

    Mufti Hussain Kamani is an instructor at Qalam. He is a faculty member at the Qalam Seminary. He gives lectures, conducts seminars and workshops, teaches Intensives, and leads Hajj & Umrah groups at Qalam. You can listen to the numerous series that he has recorded on the Qalam Podcast.  

    He currently resides in Dallas, TX with his wife and four children. He also serves as a resident scholar for the Islamic Association of Carrollton (Masjid Al-Rahman).  

    Mufti Hussain Kamani was born and raised in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. His journey to pursue sacred Islamic knowledge began at age 6. By the age of 9, he completed the memorization of the Holy Quran. To further advance his studies in the Islamic Sciences, he traveled to the United Kingdom and pursued formal Islamic authorizations (ijazahs). For 7 years, Mufti Kamani studied a rigorous curriculum covering the Arabic language and literature, Islamic jurisprudence, Tafseer of the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, Islamic Philosophy, and Aqeedah. Afterward, he was selected for a post-graduate level course in Islamic Law and Legal Verdicts, which he completed within two years. He later earned his graduate degree in Business Management from the University of Coventry in the UK.

    Mufti Asif Umar was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his memorization of the Holy Quran and the intensive Alim course program at the Institute of Islamic Education (IIE) in Elgin, Illinois. At IIE, Mufti Asif received extensive training in Arabic, Quran, Hadith, and Islamic Jurisprudence (including the laws of inheritance), among other subjects. Mufti Asif was fortunate to be among the final students of Shaykhul Hadith Maulana Muhammad Na’eem (Rahmatullahi Alayhi).  

    Following his graduation in 2007, Mufti Asif enrolled at Madrasah In’aamiyyah in Durban, South Africa, where he completed a 2-year postgraduate course (Iftaa) specializing in Islamic Law, where he acquired the ability to issue legal verdicts under the tutelage of Mufti Ebrahim Desai. Following his time there, he spent several months studying Arabic at Al-Diwan Center in Cairo, Egypt, and independently under the tutelage of scholars at Al-Azhar University.  

    Upon his return to the United States, Mufti Asif taught Quran and Fiqh at Madinatul Uloom in Virginia before returning to his hometown, St. Louis, where he has served as Imam of the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis since 2012.

    Mufti Wasim Khan was born in Dallas, Texas, and began his journey in Islamic knowledge at a very young age. After spending considerable months improving his Quran recitation at Jami’atul ‘Ilm Wal-Huda in the UK, Mufti Wasim embarked on a decade-long ‘Aalim training program. After studying in 4 different continents, Mufti Wasim graduated in 2010 from Darul Uloom Zakariyya. After graduation, Mufti Wasim studied for an additional 2 years at Darul Uloom Zakariyya to complete the iftaa course (for learning the discipline of giving fatwa) and to further specialize in the sciences of Tafseer, Hadith, and Fiqh – fields in which he holds multiple ijazaat.   

    Mufti Wasim currently holds the second shortest sanad in the world to the Prophet Mohammed (s) through the sanad of Maulana Makki Hijazi. Amongst his most prominent teachers are Mufti Radha ul Haq, Sheikh Makki Hijazi, Sheikh Shoaib Arnaoot, Sheikh Muhammed Awwamah, and Sheikh Mohammed Ali Saabuni.  

    In addition to currently serving as the Director and Dean of ISRA Foundation, Mufti Wasim is a regular speaker across North America at conferences, workshops, youth programs, social services events, and development programs. In 2014, Mufti Wasim joined the Institute of Islamic Education in Illinois as a full-time teacher, teaching Aqeedah, Hadith, and Fiqh among other subjects. In 2015, Mufti Wasim presented his thesis on abortion at the American Muslim Jurist Assembly (AMJA), making him the youngest presenter at this conference. Mufti Wasim is extensively involved in Houston and Dallas, TX communities, active in counseling, interfaith work, community representation, and teaching classes at various institutions.  

    Some of Mufti Wasim’s projects over the past few years include the founding of ISRA Foundation and Khateeb Notes. Mufti Wasim serves as the Vice-President of his family business, Caravan Travel, through which he takes regular Hajj and Umrah groups.

Mawlana Yasir Khan founded Al-Misbaah in 2015 with the hopes that it will be a means of Muslim youth preserving their Iman and working to serve their communities. In addition to building the Iman of the people, one of Al-Misbaah’s goals is to serve as a means of dawah, to invite others to the beautiful religion.

    Mawlana Hamza Mehter was born and raised in New York. He completed his hifz and went on to pursue an education in the Islamic sciences. He dedicated nine years to these studies in Canada, after which he continued to study at Madrasa Arabia Islamia Azaadville in South Africa. He had the good fortune of spending a lot of time in the company of Mawlana Fazlur Rahman Azmi. Thereafter in 2012, he served as imam at the Islamic Society of West Contra Costa County, Masjid Al Rahman, Richmond, CA, where he remains today. He currently serves as the principal of Universal Mercy Academy.

    Mufti Wahaajuddin Mohammed is one of the imams of Tawheed Center in Farmington Hills, MI. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee and completed the memorization of the Quran at the Institute of Islamic Education (Illinois) in 2003. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he began the formal study of the Islamic sciences and completed his Bachelor’s in Management from Georgia Tech in 2010. He briefly served as the Head of Quranic Studies at the Good Tree Academy in Dallas, Texas before relocating to Farmington Hills, Michigan in September of 2012, where he has since served the Tawheed Center community. In 2018, he completed the Shahaadtul ‘Alimiyyah program at the Masjid Madinatul Ilm in Canton, Michigan, receiving formal authorization (‘ijaaza) in the major books of Hadith and Islamic sciences, and received a separate formal authorization in the ten modes of Quranic recitation. He resides in Michigan with his wife and children and continues to serve the Tawheed Center and greater Detroit community by teaching, leading, and speaking throughout the area.

    Mawlana Yousuf Ahmed was born in Karachi, Pakistan. He completed the memorization of the Quran while in high school and subsequently enrolled in the Alim program at the Institute of Islamic Education, where he completed a formal Alimiyyah Degree. He currently serves as an Islamic studies teacher at Darul Arqam North for grades 6-12 in Houston, Texas.

    Shaykh Rizwan Ali is currently the Imam and Religious Director of the Islamic Center of Naperville. He completed his bachelor’s degree from Benedictine University in Social Sciences and a minor in Secondary Education. He completed his master’s degree from Saint Xavier University in Curriculum and Instruction. He completed his doctorate in Educational Leadership at Creighton University. He completed his Islamic Studies degree from Al Azhar University in Cairo. He works very closely with the youth at CPSA as an Islamic Studies Teacher for boys from 7-12th grade, and Head of the Arabic and Islamic Studies Department. He also is an instructor at Mishkah University and part of the Academic Committee.

    Shaykh Hamzah wald Maqbul was born in Whittier, California, and lived in Southern California until the age of ten when he moved to Blaine, Washington. After graduating from Blaine High School, he went on to attend the University of Washington and in 2004 completed a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and a Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations.    

    During his study at the university, he was active on campus, serving as the president of the UW Muslim Students Association. After 9/11 he was also listed by the University of Washington as an expert on Islam and was invited to address various groups from all walks of life from universities to high schools to community groups as well as all forms of media (TV, Radio, Newspaper, Internet).  

    After graduation, Shaykh Hamzah went on to pursue traditional Islāmic studies, which took him to a number of countries, including Syria and Egypt where he studied the Arabic language, Morocco, Mauritania, and UAE, where he studied the madhhab of Imām Mālik, grammar, usul al-hadith, and the two renditions of the qira’ah of Imam Nāfi’, Warsh and Qālūn, and finally, Pakistān where he had the opportunity to study tafsīr, Usūl al-Hadīth, Hadīth, ‘Ilm al-Rijāl and Hanafī Fiqh. All of these studies culminated in him receiving an Ijāzat al-Tadrīs, literally meaning “a license to teach” which is the equivalent in Pakistānī Islāmic seminaries to a MA in Arabic and Islāmic studies, as well as an unbroken chain of transmission by which to narrate the Hadīth of such books as the Muwatta' of Imām Mālik, the Sihāh al-Sittah (Bukhārī, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī, Nasā'ī, and Ibn Mājah), and the Sharh Ma'ānī al-Athār of Imām al-Tahāwī.  

    After his return to the United States, Shaykh Hamzah spent five years as the resident scholar of the Thawr Institute, a non-profit religious and educational organization based in Seattle, Washington, teaching, giving khutbahs in local Masājid, and traveling through America promoting the knowledge and practice of the sunnah. In parallel with his work at Thawr, he worked closely with Islamic Relief, CAIR Seattle, and a number of other non-profit organizations that serve the Muslim Community. He is currently the resident scholar for Ribāt, a center for learning and remembrance in the Midwest United States.

    Mawlana Kamil Uddin was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. He completed the memorization of the Qurʾān while in high school and subsequently enrolled into the ʿĀlim Program at the Institute of Islamic Education. At the Institute, Mawlana Kamil completed a formal ʿĀlimiyyah Degree. After graduating in 2011, he began educating students in the ʿĀlim Program at that very institute for four years.   He has a special interest in tafsīr and ʿulūm al-Qurʾān and has regularly been teaching courses in the Department of Qurʾānic Exegesis and the Department of Qurʾānic Studies & Recitation at Darul Qasim since 2014. Additionally, Mawlana Kamil completed a BA in Organizational Leadership from Benedictine University and an MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) from Dominican University.

    Mufti Hisham Dawood completed ḥifẓ al-Qurʾān (the memorization of the Qurʾān) at the age of fourteen. In January of 2007, he enrolled at the Madrasah Inʿāmiyyah in Camperdown, South Africa. He completed the final three years of the ʿĀlimiyyah program at the renowned Dārul ʿUlūm Zakariyyā under the tutelage and mentorship of Shaykh al-Hadīth Muftī Riḍāʾ al-Haq who is counted among the world’s leading contemporary scholars. Mufti Hisham completed his iftāʾ studies at Dar al-Iftāʾ Maḥmūdiyyah under Mufti Ebrahim Desai and Mufti Husain Kadodia. In 2015, he joined Darul Qasim where he continues to serve as a full time member of its faculty and Dār al-Iftā department.

    Mawlana Shamaas Nyazee was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. After high school he decided to take a year off before college to Memorize the Qur’an. He finished the memorization of the Qur’an with Shaykh Haroon at Darul Qur’an Foundation in January 2010 in a span of about 8 months. He then travelled to Pakistan to study at Jamia Hasnain Faisalabad and studied for 6 years. He graduated in 2016 and is currently teaching at Madrasah Al Hussnain in Indianapolis, IN.

    Mufti Nabbil Khan began studying Islamic studies in 2011 by enrolling in the Alim course at Ma’had Ta’lim al-Islam (Elgin, IL).  For his final year of extensive hadith studies, Mufti Nabbil traveled to Pakistan and enrolled at the renowned Jami’ Darul Uloom Karachi, where he studied under and receive authorizations from Mufti Muhammad Taqi Uthmani, Mufti Muhammad Rafi Uthmani, Mufti Abdur Rauf Sikhrawi and others (may Allah lengthen their lives). Upon returning to Chicago in 2018, Mufti Nabbil was accepted into Darul Iftaa Chicago to specialize in the field of issuing legal verdicts (iftaa) under the tutelage of Mufti Abrar Mirza (may Allah protect him).  He received authorization in the field and continues to remain active therein, in addition to managing various business ventures.

  • Mufti Abrar Mirza graduated from Benedictine University in 2006 with a degree in Information Systems. He simultaneously began formal studies at Darul Qasim in Glen Ellyn, IL. He completed his ‘Alim course in 2007 from Ma’had Ta’lim al-Islam in Elgin, IL. Thereafter, he enrolled at Madrasah In’aamiyyah (Camperdown, South Africa), to specialize in the field of issuing legal verdicts (fatwas). In 2009, Mufti Abrar completed his Iftaa training under Mufti Ebrahim Desai, a world renowned jurist and expert in Islamic finance.    

    Mufti Abrar is the founder of the American Fiqh Academy and is the head of Darul Iftaa Chicago.

  • Mawlana Atiq Taiyab completed his hifz at the age of sixteen. He began his studies under Mawlana Aziz Ahmed. Thereafter he studied at DarusSalam for two years. He then went to Darul Uloom Zakariyya in South Africa for one year and Madrasa Ibn Abbas in Karachi for one year. After returning to America, he completed his studies at Darul Qasim. Mawlana Atiq is currently teaching the Shaykh al-Hind program at Darul Qasim.
