  • Greetings from across the pond. I sit down with Dr. Liz Oโ€™Riordan (@oriordanliz), a UK-based breast cancer surgeon by training turned advocate after her own invasive lobular breast cancer diagnosis at age 40. She has since dedicated her life to educating and empowering people affected by breast cancer. She is an international speaker and author of โ€œThe Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Controlโ€ and her memoir, โ€œUnder the Knife: The Rise and Fall of a Female Surgeon.

We discuss how her diagnosis changed her perspective and purpose, and she shares wisdom after having been on both sides of breast cancer.

We hope you love this episode as much as we do.

  • I am so excited to introduce you to my cancer besties, Missi and Alice, who turned their breast cancer journeys into purpose!

Cancer Besties is an incredible online toolbox that translates your imaging & lab reports into plain English, & also provides a list of follow-up questions to ask your provider. ๐Ÿคฏ (When I posted about it on @theboobiedocs, you all went crazy with good reason!)

We talk about each of their breast cancer journeys & how this inspired them to create Cancer Besties. Missi was found to carry a BRCA 1 mutation and underwent a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. She then helped her friend Alice, who was diagnosed with breast cancer after her first mammogram.

We cover a lot in this important conversation, including:

โ€ขWhat to expect for your mammogram & biopsy

โ€ขUnderstanding your imaging & biopsy results

โ€ขHow to calculate your own breast cancer risk score using the Tyrer-Cuzick calculator

โ€ขThe real reason you canโ€™t wear deodorant during a mammogramโ€ฆ

    And so much more!

  • It is my incredible honor to introduce you to my friends at the Pink Eraser Project, a newly launched nonprofit to help accelerate the development of the breast cancer vaccine, which thanks to their support & top cancer researchers around the country, could be a reality in the next 5 to 10 years. (Yes you read that right!!) ๐Ÿคฏ

I joined by cofounder, Kristen Dahlgren, an Emmy nominated NBC reporter & medical correspondent for nearly 3 decades, who recently stepped down from her role to launch the Pink Eraser project, which as a breast cancer thriver, is a project so dear to heart.๐ŸŽ€

Their mission, to support the ongoing clinical trials & cancer vaccine researchers including Kiran Dillon, PhD, Executive Director of the University of Washington Cancer vaccine Institute, who joins me on the podcast as well.

I promise this podcast episode will leave feeling hopeful, inspired, & wanting to support their mission of erasing breast cancer.

  • Now is the right time to share this important conversation that I recorded back in May, 2023 with Lizzy Savetsky & Dr. Ira Savetsky.

@drirasavetsky is a Manhattan based plastic surgeon. @lizzysavetsky is a digital fashion influencer, matchmaker, mother if 3 & one of the most outspoken advocates for Israel. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

We discuss the antisemitism that their family has been subjected their family to, particularly during their premature departure from the most recent reboot of the Real Housewives of New York & over prior conflicts in the Middle East.

This conversation is even important now given recent world events & the rise in antisemitism. โœก๏ธ

But this is mainly an open conversation about breast health. We talk all about breast implants (spoiler alert, Dr. Savetsky did Lizzieโ€™s breasts himself!), the rise in young breast cancer, & the increased risk of BRCA mutations in the Ashkenazi Jewish population. We also talk about finding balance in social media & Lizzyโ€™s sobriety journey.

I also offer my best breast cancer screening advice for those at higher-than-average risk for breast cancer.

I am thrilled to be offering free genetic screening for the first 25 listeners thanks to @getjscreened & @kickbrca! ๐Ÿ™Œ

I hope you learn something from this conversation. I wish you peace & safety wherever you are. ๐Ÿ’•

And, of course, we dedicate the last part of the episode to her area of expertise, cancer during pregnancy.

  • I am so happy to be chatting with three incredible women from The Breasties, Kelli Goss, Lauren Oxenhandler, & Kelsey Litwin. The Breasties is the first all-inclusive nonprofit for breast & gynecologic cancer that creates a community for survivor, previvors, thrivers, & carevivors through peer-to-peer connection, resources, & advocacy.

We chat about their connection to breast cancer, how The Breasties helped them, and the upcoming Camp Breastie, a four-day summit June 1-4 where hundreds of people impacted by breast and gynecologic cancer come together for community, patient advocacy, and education. (Registration closes May 1 so itโ€™s not too late to join!) ๐Ÿซถ

Kelli Goss is a BRCA1 previvor and the daughter of a two-time breast cancer survivor. In 2018, after discovering that she carried the BRCA gene mutation, Kellie opted to have a prophylactic mastectomy and hysterectomy to lower the risk of cancer. She shares her BRCA1 journey in the hopes that women of color will see themselves represented when making informed decisions about breast and ovarian health, early detection, and genetic counseling. Kelli is The Breasties Director of Diversity Equity + Inclusion.

Lauren Oxenhandler is a transformational Life Coach and Reiki II practitioner. She is cancer-free after her stage II triple negative breast cancer diagnosis in 2017. After finishing chemotherapy, Lauren felt isolated and craved connection to a community of people who understood what she was going through. She discovered The Breasties, and now serves as

    Director of Virtual Programming.

Kelsey Litwin discovered that she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation at 22 years old & was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer two years later, just prior to her prophylactic mastectomy. Kelsey is a freelance journalist, editor, and communications specialist based in Montreal, Canada and is passionate about making health information accessible. She writes and edits for The Peak, working to create content that resonates with, comforts and supports all members of the Breasties community.

  • I am joined by two of the incredible founders of A Damn Good Life, Victoria Raphael and Ann Palmer, who are no stranger to breast cancer diagnosis at a young age & the impact it can have on a womanโ€™s fertility journey.

Victoria was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 33 & faced treatment related infertility. After a long surrogacy journey, she welcomed her first son via a surrogate earlier this year. ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿป Victoria is about to start her second surrogacy journey with the surrogateโ€™s twin sister! (HELLO LIFETIME MOVIE!)

Ann watched her mom battle breast cancer for a decade when she was a teenager, & thanks to high-risk screening, she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer at age 36 during COVID.

After their own battles with breast cancer & infertility, they both wanted to give back in a tangible way. Together with friend Sarrah Strimel Bentley, also a young breast cancer thriver currently on her own surrogacy journey, they created A Damn Good Life to make surrogacy a reality for young breast cancer thrivers who do not have the financial resources themselves.

Thanks to tons of fundraising events & โ€œlots of blood, sweat, & tears,โ€ they will be gifting their first total surrogacy journey at the end of the month! The first round of applications are due Monday, April 10, but they plan to continue their mission

We talk about i their breast cancer & fertility journeys, why this organization is so near & dear to their heart, & their ideal grant candidate!

  • I am so excited to partner with my friends from Dr. Deepa Halaharvi, breast surgical oncologist, and Monica Brooks, both breast cancer thrivers and hosts of @thebreastcancerpodcast, to create this collaborative podcast episode. We talk about their breast cancer journeys, their special bond, biopsy experiences and imaging tips , and so much more.

We hope you love this joint podcast episode as much as we do. ๐Ÿ‘ฏโ€โ™€๏ธ
