  • Paul Scanlon has been a mentor, educator, and motivational speaker for over 40 years with a focus on communication, leadership, cultural engineering, and self awareness. I've been following Paul on Instagram and have listened to his podcast for quite some time as I've processed traumas, worked on setting better boundaries, and learned communication skills – all the things that I'm still working on to this day!

I’m happy to have him on the podcast today to talk about how our childhood traumas impact us as adults and how we can take measures to get unstuck, come back home to our authentic selves, set better boundaries, and become more comfortable with change.

Paul’s book, I Am Not My Father, is an incredible story of how to heal generational trauma and the power of leaning into who you truly are.

In this episode, he explains how attachment styles formed in childhood influence our relationships and patterns as adults, and how we can start to have more compassion and understanding towards ourselves through all of the ups and downs that life throws at us.

He shares helpful tools for setting boundaries and caring less about what other people think of us as we embark on our journey of self improvement and evolution. He acknowledges that, as we grow and change, our relationships can be strained, and how to overcome friction in our lives in order to focus on our own personal growth. He even shares advice for navigating career transitions and aging gracefully in both body and mind.

I’m grateful for Paul’s work and insight on how to get unstuck and make small steps towards aligning who we are with how we show up in the world. I hope his perspective inspires and empowers you to look inward, too.

  • Eating disorders are mental health disorders. Period – full stop. (Triggering content warning)

Johanna Kandel, today’s esteemed guest and the founder and CEO of the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, has dedicated her career to unveiling that commonly misunderstood fact. Eating disorders are biologically-based brain illnesses. They are genetic in nature, and they are absolutely serious mental illnesses.

As a passionate (and impressively credentialed) advocate for mental health and eating disorders legislation, Johanna has spent a lot of time meeting with numerous members of Congress, and was part of the first-ever Eating Disorder Roundtable at the White House.

This is a deeply personal conversation wherein both Johanna and I share experiences from our own struggles with disordered eating and mental health; dig into our raw, honest, and unfiltered concerns about the growing trend of weight loss drugs; and deliver important tips for respectfully supporting those in your life struggling with body image issues.

You don’t want to miss this table stakes conversation on mental health as we shine a bright light on one of the most deeply shrouded health and wellness secrets hidden beneath American society. No doubt, you’ll leave more informed, inspired, and empowered to help further the cause.

  • In this episode, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with Dr. Dave Rabin at SXSW. He is not just any neuroscientist and psychiatrist; he's also a co-founder and the Chief Medical Officer at Apollo Neuroscience. He’s an expert in navigating the fields of Ketamine and MDMA-assisted therapy, and his work is pioneering new pathways for treating PTSD and other mental health issues.

His groundbreaking research, including his primary study on MDMA-assisted therapy for severe PTSD, is showing the world that it's possible to reverse trauma at the genetic level. This offers not just hope, but real, tangible solutions for those suffering.

Dr. Rabin sheds light on the Apollo device, a wearable piece of technology designed to improve heart rate variability and promote relaxation and focus. I personally experienced its benefits during SXSW, using it to transition from a sleep setting to a social setting, and the results were amazing!

Beyond Apollo, Dr. Rabin offers insights into the true cause of depression, ways to start healing trauma, and tips for connecting more deeply with our emotions. We also touch on the differing effects of loneliness in men and women, and the importance of destigmatizing addiction.

This episode is packed with actionable advice and small steps you can take to strengthen your mental health, alongside a deep dive into the benefits of Apollo for stress management and overall wellbeing. It's a conversation you won't want to miss, especially if you're interested in the cutting edge of mental health therapy and technology. • I’m honored to sit down with Sasha DiGiulian, a remarkable figure in the climbing world whose story is not just about reaching new heights in her sport, but also about overcoming personal and physical challenges with incredible resilience and grace.

She has won the World Championships for Female Overall, and has placed Silver in the Bouldering World Championships, as well as Bronze in the Duel. Sasha has been the undefeated panAmerican Champion 2004 to the present, and she is a three-time US National Champion.

However, Sasha's mark as a female athlete and impact on the climbing world extends beyond these incredible physical accomplishments.

In today's conversation, we explore the physical and mental training routines that have helped her face some of the world's most challenging climbs. We discuss her unwavering commitment to paving the way for other female athletes in climbing and her advocacy for equal recognition and pay in the sport.

Sasha's resilience shines through as she shares her experience of overcoming a significant hip surgery that left her immobile for months. This period of recovery not only tested her physical limits but also led to an inspiring shift in her mindset, culminating in the launch of her superfood protein bar company and the writing of her new book, Taking Lead: Hanging On, Letting Go, and Conquering Life's Hardest Climbs.

Sasha vulnerably opens up about the challenges of disordered eating within the sport, the importance of proper nutrition and how she has gotten through her own battles with depression.

She’s a role model to all of us for how to stay mentally tough and how focusing on gratitude can be a total game changer. Join me in celebrating her journey as a powerhouse woman who has dared to stand up for herself and make an indelible mark in the world of climbing!

And remember – if you’re in Austin for SXSW on March 9th, come hang with me and Kendra Scott, from 11am to 1pm, at her flagship store for a little sip and shop in partnership with Kendra Gives Back, where 20% of proceeds will benefit The Big Silence foundation and our programs.

  • Today’s episode is for anyone who loves to sing and dance. We’re joined by the remarkable Maryn Azoff, a classically trained singer and much more – a spirit lifter, soul emancipator, and fear crusher.

Maryn empowers people globally through her Vocal Transformation Method, teaching the transformative power of the human voice. Maryn's method blends ancient wisdom and vocal techniques from diverse cultures, reawakening the body-mind-spirit connection.

In this conversation, we explore Maryn’s journey to discovering her voice and passion for singing as she shares insights on our innate vocal instincts from birth, the transformative power of our voice, and techniques for recognizing and releasing trauma in the body. She also dishes on advice for anyone struggling with anxiety, self-confidence or confronting fears around not being “good enough” – leaving us with breathing technique tips to shift our nervous system state.

Maryn teaches us how to use our voice to connect with the earth and heal ourselves, reminding us that our inner child has so many gifts to explore if we allow them the chance. She empowers us with the knowledge that we’re capable of more than we give ourselves credit for.

I’m excited to add voice to my mental health tool box, and for those interested, I recommend looking into Maryn’s courses and retreats for a deep dive into this incredible healing art form.

  • Katie Horwitch is a writer, speaker, mindset coach, and women’s empowerment activist. She’s also the founder of WANT: Women Against Negative Talk, a platform that gives women tips, tools, motivation, and inspiration to live fearlessly. And she’s back for another conversation on the podcast, this time visiting The Big Silence studio in person.

Touring in Austin to promote her book, Want Your Self, Katie and I take this opportunity to go even deeper into subjects we covered in October – and crack open a few interesting new ones, too. Starting with a rewind to trace her shift from fitness to self-development, we touch on her writing process, dating lessons, and life as an introvert in New York City.

Of course, we hop around tips and takeaways from the book, as well – delving into her embodiment journey, tips for telling the difference between intuition and triggered suspicion, reframing failure when it comes to your 2024 goals, and so much more.

Katie is raw and honest in the retelling of her ups and downs – as she says, always doing her best to represent her most true self. I’m so thankful she was able to join the show again, and hope you enjoy Part 2 of our inspiring and educational conversation.

    “The Big Silence”...

  • When we experience bullying or face emotional hardship, it’s hard to imagine a world in which everything will turn out okay. At just 20 years old, Doug Bopst was addicted to opiates and spent time in jail for “possession with intent to sell.” It felt like a death sentence at the time. But in dedicating himself to doing the work to shift out of a victim mindset, mindful movement, and the people who believed in him, this is not where Doug’s story ends, but where it begins.

Doug Bopst is an award-winning personal trainer, author of three books, and host of the Adversity Advantage Podcast on a crusade to inspire others to overcome adversity and become the best version of themselves. Doug has been featured on NBC’s ‘Today Show,’ Men’s Health, Forbes, Rich Roll’s podcast, Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, The Skinny Confidential Him and Her podcast, and more. There’s even a short documentary about his story, From Felony to Fitness to Free.

In this honest conversation about facing demons and coming out the other side as a changed person, Doug reveals how he was able to kick addiction and reinvent himself, sharing how instrumental exercise and talk therapy have been in healing childhood wounds and limiting beliefs.

Doug and Karena discuss how important it is to be surrounded by people with similar values, not let the fear of other people’s opinions keep you from being true to yourself, and build self-trust and resilience through doing hard things. No matter how low you’ve been, Doug’s story is proof that you can heal and become the best version of yourself.

  • We hear terms like narcissist, love bombing, and trauma bonding a lot on social media. But what do they actually mean? And how can you recognize the signs so you can avoid, or begin to heal from, a toxic relationship?

We explore these complex questions with Dr. Nadine Macaluso, a somatic psychologist and psychotherapist, in today’s episode of the podcast. Dr. Macaluso’s mission is to break the stigma of abusive relationships– and her first book, Run Like Hell, will be released this month.

In this conversation, Dr. Macaluso shares her story of leaving her marriage to Jordan Belfort, the stockbroker infamously known as the Wolf of Wall Street, and reveals her journey to becoming a therapist at age 39 – giving us a great illustration of why it’s never too late to start something new.

She tells us all about pathological relationships, trauma bonding, and love bombing while revealing how to recognize if you’re in a toxic relationship. Plus, advice for nurturing relationships, co-parenting, and spotting red (and green!) flags while dating.

We wrap up by answering questions from The Big Silence community. Nobody teaches us about relationships in school. Today, we’re all getting an essential education!

  • I’m thrilled to welcome dancer and performer Anya Garnis to the podcast. I met Anya when I took a dance class with a group of girlfriends; the experience was so joyful and meditative. I was touched by her personal journey with mental health and inspired to share it with this community.

You may know Anya as a dancer and choreographer from So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars Live, and BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing. After years performing all over the world, Anya has returned to her first passion – teaching, creating The Body Instinct, a program where she helps women feel empowered, confident, and connected through dance, yoga, breath work, and mobility movement.

In today’s episode, Anya shares her story of growing up in Eastern Europe and studying dance from a young age. She gets vulnerable about her career highs and lows, the pressure of being your own brand, and how she lost and rediscovered her love of dance over the years. She tells us about her physical and mental health battles, and how she came out stronger and more centered.

We also talk about the healing powers of meditation and the importance of melding movement with mindfulness. As fitness professionals and the faces of our brands, Anya and I connected on so many levels. I can’t wait for you to hear this honest, moving conversation.

Check out The Big Silence social media feeds today where Anya is helping us kick off our dance challenge! And – as always, don’t forget to check in on your friends this holiday season. • Today, we have the honor of sitting down with Chase Chewning, an Army veteran and Certified Health Coach who has turned his life's adversities into a source of strength, both for himself and for countless others.

After sustaining injuries that led to bilateral reconstructive hip surgeries, Chase faced the daunting task of learning to walk again, not once, but twice! This physical struggle coincided with an immense personal loss – the passing of his father to a terminal illness. These experiences, understandably, had a profound impact on Chase's mental health.

In this episode, Chase shares how he learned to pivot after these life-altering events, transitioning from military life back into civilian life, and enrolling in college at 24 to study exercise science. He  shares how becoming a health coach, supporting and inspiring others in their own healing journeys, led him to confronting trauma and pain he had pushed aside.

We also explore how he overcame his struggles with PTSD, finding relief through innovative methods like psychedelic assisted psychotherapy and ketamine treatments.

Chase's story is a powerful example of how one can turn adversity into a purposeful life, inspiring others through his top-ranked Health & Fitness podcast, Ever Forward Radio, and his dedication to helping others "LIVE A LIFE EVER FORWARD." Let's dive in and be inspired by Chase Chewning's incredible journey of resilience and healing.

And – as always, don’t forget to check in on your friends this holiday season. In the spirit of support, I’ve teamed up with my friend Jewel again to spotlight the Not Alone Challenge throughout this often emotionally charged time of the year. Learn how you can join the fun: here.
