In Episode #150 of the “Art of Raising Humans”, Sara and I interview the co-author of a brand new book called “The Way of Play”. She is a nationally recognized play therapy expert. Georgie is the Founder/Director of The Play Strong Institute, a center devoted to the study, research, and practice of play therapy through a neurodevelopment lens, along with Dr. Bryson, the Founder/Executive Director of The Center for Connection, a multidisciplinary clinical practice in Southern California. Georgie is also a child, adolescent, and family psychotherapist and maintains a private practice at The Center for Connection.
A graduate professor at Santa Clara University and active researcher in childhood play, attachment science, and mental health, Georgie studied play therapy at the University of Roehampton, London and is now in the final phase of her doctoral program.
This episode will help all parents have a better understanding of the power or play and how it is vital for a child’s development. Georgie does a great job helping parents engage play in a variety of ways and use it as a tool to more deeply connect and understand their children. Sara and I know how the busyness of life can make it tempting to put play to the side as we frantically complete the to do lists. However, when we prioritize play we notice that getting things done becomes a whole lot easier and more enjoyable.

In Episode 147, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, share the 4th core principal of how we parent and how we coach other parents. When we look at all the science and research that has been conducted over the past several decades about parenting, the most powerful and important part of it seems to come down to one thing - Connection. With a strong and healthy connection our children are more receptive and open to our guidance and our love. When the connection becomes strained or weakened then the relationship will begin to deteriorate and the child will feel disconnected and alone. As important as connection is, we also know it can be difficult to maintain as children grow up and searching for independence and peers is the priority. Sara and I discuss how to maintain a strong bond throughout all the child’s various stages of development and maturity. It definitely takes some creativity and intentionality but in the end connection is what makes all of it worth it.

In Episode 146, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, share the 3rd core principal of how we parent and how we coach other parents. Most parenting approaches we were exposed to early on in our parenting, and also most therapeutic approaches being used with children had a “Child first” approach. All the different ‘child first” approaches started with what the child was doing wrong and then finding a way to change it. The “parent first” approach gives the power back to the parents and equips them with the tools they need to change the issues they are having with their child. This shift changed our perspective not only on how we were helped our children but also how we were did therapy with kids and families. This episode will help parents see their role as a parent and the power they have as a mother and father in a different way. This change in perspective will shift the power dynamics in the home and help parents really disciple their children instead of controlling them or being controlled by them.

In Episode 143, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, delve into the second part of our Core Four series. Now that we have discussed the brain, let’s start talking about behavior and emotions. Most of us were raised in homes where the discipline techniques used by the parents were behavior based. Over the past 40 years we have a better understanding of what lies behind the behaviors. The behavior is really just a symptom of an underlying problem. When we coach parents, we want them to know how to look past the behaviors and see the emotions that are motivating and informing them. In this podcast, Sara and I share specific techniques to help them shift from changing behavior to understanding emotion. This will help children not be controlled or “bossed” around by their big feelings. They will instead be able to understand them and choose what they want to do with them.

In Episode 142, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, start 2025 with the first of four podcasts where we share what we are calling our Core Four (don’t know if we will stick with that or not). These are 4 parenting principles we found were crucial in helping us move away from using fear, punishment, and shame with our kids. In this first part of the series we dive into helping our listeners understand their child’s developing brain and the science of interpersonal neurobiology. I know that sounds really scientific but we do our best to make this very practical and usable because it is a part of every interaction we have with our kids. This is a must listen and a vital concept that will encourage and empower every parent who wants to create a healthier family.

In Episode 135, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, discuss what to do when your kids refuse to do what you are asking because they want to do something else. We walk through the steps you can take to shift these moments into great opportunities. Too often these situations turn into power struggles where parents feel they need to dominate or they throw their hands in the air. All of this ties perfectly into the holiday season and how many parents feel anxious, stressed and frustrated with all of the expectations and demands. You can actually create something different by understanding what your child is already telling you, “You aren’t being controlled and you can actually do what you want!” That is the power of choice and the gift of free will.

In Episode 131, Kyle and Sara, LPC’s, have an in depth discussion about time outs. Lots of parents come to us no longer wanting to spank and they feel like time outs are the only other option available. In this episode we explore the history of time outs and why we thought we were going to use them when we had kids. As a child therapist, Sara was even trained how to teach parents the best ways to do time outs. However, there are many unintended consequences that occur in families when they utilize time out as a discipline strategy. We end the episode with other techniques we use in our home and coach other parents to use, so they can transition away from spankings and time outs.
