This entire episode is dedicated to a question from a loyal listener to the TLS podcast. Everine Writes:
"Being a teacher in a traditional school system, the academic climate is based on overestimated grades, and where punishments rule instead of compliments. I would like to have more concrete, practical tools (examples if you wish) so that the positive learning attitude becomes more natural in my class, and hopefully later on in my school, and so on."

My own moment came when my son looked me dead in the eye and calmly said, "Can't you just speak to me like.. normal?"Bit of a blow coming from my 14-year-old son, to me... a student care social worker in a school actively engaged with teaching life skills to not only students, but parents and teachers as well.Moments like this can send you reeling. This isn't what you signed up for... or is it? It a direct result of what you did sign up for. You shouldn't even be surprised, but you still feel a little embarrassed and belittled. At the same time however, the calmness and the maturity you just saw makes you proud. He's learned it so well he's better than you!Or at least, that's the truth in my case.Marlaine Cover's moment had come a few years before that, in a similarly humbling experience that brought inspiring clarity at the same time. That clarity spawned a series of valuable exiting opportunities for all of us who are even just a little obsessive about the next generation's wellbeing. This is the first episode of the Teach Life Skills Podcast.
Really it's just a trailer announcing the coming launch. A very good friend of mine I hope to meet someday soon keeps asking, "who were your teachers?" Thanks Mama Marlaine. Your touching story inspired me to keep going all these years. There are so many things our schooling and our upbringing did not prepare us for. No fault of our parents and teachers, mind you. They did the best they could with what they knew in whatever context they grew up in. So did their teachers.. and so on.
Teach Life Skills is all about breaking that cycle.
YOU have a life skill you didn't learn in school or at home that you can share with other who didn't learn it. They have as well. Together as a community facilitated by this cool thing we call the internet, we can join the movement that helps us to fill in as many gaps as possible.
As a teacher or caregiver of children you'll have yet another important resource available to become fully conscious of all the essential skills the children need to master for a full, rounded and satisfying adult life. We'll also have the means of learning them from each other, and passing them on to the children.
At least, that's the goal. This is your invitation to walk the path together with us. During these first few weeks on June 28 we'll start the podcast with a focus on taking full ownership at home to motivate children to do their very best in school.
The latest studies on family engagement shows huge gaps in our understanding of how important this is to the teacher's experience in the classroom... and how much of it is missing in many homes. So we start there then quickly move on to other essential life skills our amazing children and teens need to master.
But really.. if you have any questions or suggestions at all concerning any of the life skills... whether it's learning them yourself or teaching them to the youth, let's hear about them. Email us at [email protected]. I'll get an expert to address it in the podcast.
It's a labor of love! Please share and help us spread the word.
