  • Welcome to today's episode where we're thrilled to have the legendary guitarist and songwriter, Mark Knopfler, join us for a delightful conversation over tea… or in his case, studio coffee. Known as a maestro of his craft and celebrated for his work with Dire Straits among other musical ventures, Mark brings stories from his illustrious career and personal life to you ears.

    In this episode:

Understand how music found its way into young Mark’s life through radio programs like “Listen With Mother” and “Children’s Favourites.”
Trace back to when finger-picking style was introduced to him by folk singers in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Reflect on songwriting inspirations drawn from blues heroes leading back through generations of influence.

    Key Takeaways:

Musical camaraderie is timeless - sharing tales that intertwine professional legends with personal friendships enriches our understanding of artists beyond their public personas.

The nuances behind creating music are captivating; whether it be mastering brewing techniques or refining guitar skills without formal training.

Inspiration can come from unexpected sources – childhood experiences listening intently to radio shows laid foundational love for lyrics which later defined Knopfler’s songwriting prowess.

Mentorship plays a critical role - meeting people who share your passion can expand your horizons musically as evidenced by encounters between young Knopfler, Chet Atkins, Roger Miller, etc.

Patience in creativity is crucial - sometimes songs need time before they’re ready to be shared with the world; they are akin to living entities growing at their own pace before venturing out independently.

Enjoy this intimate session filled with nostalgia, laughter, wisdom gained across decades within studios' walls—plus some exclusive insider knowledge straight from one rock 'n roll's most esteemed icons: Mr. Mark Knopfler himself!

Twiggy shares a cup of tea with legendary drummer from The Police, Stewart Copeland. Known not only for his musical prowess but also for his wit and vibrant use of language (warning: expect some strong words!), Stewart shares anecdotes that span continents, cultures, and the very evolution of music genres.

We delve into his multicultural upbringing in Beirut and England, offering a glimpse into how it shaped him both personally and musically.

Discover fascinating details about his family’s history - including his mother’s role in WWII intelligence efforts at Bletchley Park and his father’s involvement as one of the founding members of the CIA.

Musical Beginnings: Learn about Stewart's initial steps towards a career in music – from playing gigs at embassy beach clubs to being entranced by Janet Roberts' dance moves which fueled his passion for drumming.

Stewart recalls two profound moments that solidified his path as a musician; an empowering experience during a Christmas event at Wells Cathedral and witnessing the raw energy unleashed by punk rock at an industry party.

    Formation of The Police:

Get an insider look into how he formed The Police after being inspired by punk's DIY ethic. Hear about finding Sting through sheer persistence (and a bit of luck), their starting struggles with crafting hit songs like "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle," etc., and choosing 'The Police' as their band name from Stuart's list of potential names.

From discussions on tea preferences to touching family stories intertwined with historical events like meeting Kim Philby’s son Harry before Philby was exposed as a double agent – these personal tidbits offer depth beyond just music talk.

Whether you're tuning in out of nostalgia or curiosity about one of rock's most iconic drummers, this episode promises engaging storytelling peppered with humor, insights into the world behind global hits, cultural intersections influencing artistry, familial ties to significant historical narratives—and above all—a testament to following your calling no matter where life takes you.

  • Today on "Tea With Twiggy," I'm thrilled to be joined by the wonderfully talented Paul Feig. Known for his flair in both fashion and film, Paul's journey from Michigan to Hollywood is as inspiring as it is entertaining.

From Humble Beginnings to Hollywood's Limelight

Paul's story starts in Michigan, far from the glitz of Hollywood. Growing up in an era of cultural shifts, he soaked in stories that later wove into his films. His move to California, starting as a Universal Studios tour guide and then attending USC Film School, was a leap into the world of movie magic. But it wasn't all red carpets; Paul's early days in stand-up comedy at 15 were filled with laughter and learning curves.

    A Household of Humour

Paul didn't grow up in a showbiz family, but humour was always part of his life. His dad's storytelling and jokes laid the groundwork for Paul's love of both sophisticated and simple comedy. Influenced by comedic greats like Steve Martin and George Carlin, Paul developed a keen sense for what tickles the funny bone.

    Behind the Camera

Paul's acting roles led to some disappointments, but they paved the way for his directorial debut. Saving up from acting gigs, he created “Freaks and Geeks”—a show that, despite its initial struggle, became a cult classic and a turning point in teen TV narratives. Working with Judd Apatow, Paul transitioned to directing, where he could enhance performances while drawing empathetically on his acting experience.

    Creating Comedic Masterpieces

Paul's stories behind hits like “Bridesmaids” showcase not just his directorial skills but the power of collaboration. The improvisational brilliance of Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo is just one example of the magic that happens on his sets. His knack for spotting talent is evident in actors like Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne, who shine in his films.

    Adapting and Evolving

We also chat about adapting to changes in the film industry, especially during the pandemic. Paul shares insights into the editing process, likening it to solving a jigsaw puzzle, and discusses the unpredictable nature of test screenings. Despite controversies like those around “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” Paul emphasises the collaborative nature of filmmaking.

Paul's upcoming projects, including action comedies with stars like John Cena and Awkwafina, promise more creative brilliance. So grab a cuppa, and let's dive into the world of Paul Feig!

  • In this episode, our host has a lively chat with the brilliant comedian Harry Hill. They reminisce about their hilarious antics on 'Tea with Harry', a unique Sky show that blends cooking and comedy.

They discuss how the pandemic affected them personally and professionally, sharing insights into the challenges of performing without an audience and adapting to virtual gigs. Listen in as they share anecdotes about drive-in comedy events where laughter was replaced by honking!

The conversation takes a personal turn as they talk about spending quality time at home with family during the lockdowns and coping mechanisms like writing autobiographies.

Surprisingly enough, we learn that Harry trained as a doctor before his comedic career took off! He shares an unexpected call he received during the pandemic to return to medicine after 30 years which led him down memory lane.

This episode is packed full of laughs, nostalgia, surprising revelations and heartfelt discussions on life amidst a global crisis. Tune in for some light-hearted banter mixed with earnest reflections.
