  • Talking Joe 218 - Nel Yomtov Interview (G.I. Joe , Transformers, Marvel, Iron Man)

alking Joe 218 - Nel Yomtov Interview (G.I. Joe , Transformers, Marvel, Iron Man)

We bring you an interview with another significant person from the history of GI Joe - Nelson "Nel" Yomtov.

Nel is known for his work at Marvel comics from 1975 to 1996 - as a writer, colourist and editor and more besides. For GI Joe, he coloured issues of GI Joe, GI joe special Missions, GI Joe order of battle & Joe Vs Transformers & also colored the whole 80 issue Marvel run of Transformers,

Nel played a critical role in the history of GI Joe, as in his role as Director of Product Development in Marvel’s licensing division. He was responsible for GI joe's licensing when it launched in 1982 and was in the room where it happened in the critical early meetings between Marvel and Hasbro.

We discuss Nel's journey at Marvel, how he got started, working in licensing, colouring, and editing, plus the K-Otics - the band he was in with Larry Hama.

  • ALKING JOE 216 - Disavowed - Interview with Sam Wells (Devils Due Assistant Publisher)
Sam Wells, based in Chicago, started as an Intern at Devils Due Publishing and went on to be Assistant Publisher and has gone on to run the Toy shop, Toy De Jour.
This is the more tightly edited audio only verion of the YouTube interview posted earlier.
    https://youtu.be/m2cCLmmNRA0
During his time at Devil's Due, Sam was involved in a bunch of stuff, but most prominently for us, the readers, as the writer on Special Missions Brazil (a story inspired by the original figures), and the Data Desk profiles. He also had some involvement in the Hasbro approval process, who he has previously described as "a multi headed schizophrenic beast".
In this interview we have a deep dive into the Devil's Due years, running from the intern days to the end of Sam's time and Devils Due and beyond.

Youtube (with us on video and extra images): https://youtu.be/ziuz8_HWJlk

Audio Only Podcast (with better sound) at normal Podcatchers, links at https://talkingjoe.co.uk/

Following on from our recent deep dive into the Larry Hama written comic "Spy Hunter and Paper Boy" Mark and Tim Finn took some time to catch up with the artist of the book (and G.I. Joe fan) artist Mathew "Mac Rey" Reynolds. Mathew Mac Rey Reynolds

We talk about discovering G.I. Joe as a kid back in 1982, the influence that it has had, early life, comics, art and breaking in to comics. We discuss his big comics projects to date: Vic Falcon (the creator owned project he developed with Larry Hama), Mercenary Sea, Ruff & Reddy, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, and speculate at the possibility of G.I. Joe in his future.

  • Its Cobra Convergence 7! And Mark and Tim were interviewed by HCC788 AKA Bryan Stephen. It's a non numbered episode as we are just doing a bit of self-indulgent navel gazing talking about ourselves and the podcast.

The YouTube version is here: https://youtu.be/l9xO36Gf30w
But its all chat, so the audio only version is just as good!

Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/
Our CC7 episode on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy came out last week and is available here https://youtu.be/2w5bEAg5ES4

  • Talking Joe 209 - Spy Hunter & Paper Boy review - For Cobra Convergence 7 - The Best Hama Joe comic you've never heard of!

Its the annual fan Cobra Convergence 7 where across the month Joe fan creators share new content! And the loose theme this year is spies, so what better tie in than to look at an unknown but GREAT comic from GI Joe Legend Larry Hama with the name SPYHUNTER in the tittle! Find out more about CC7 here: https://hcc788.com/

In this episode of next episode Mark and Tim are talking about what I am calling Larry Hama’s best GI Joe comic that you have never heard of, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy, released May 2021. (Even if technically speaking it isn't GI Joe). Released May 2021, Spy Hunter & Paper Boy #1-6 (DC, $3.99 each): a "digital first" (but in reality digital only) comic arriving on DC’s digital first channels including ComiXology, with all six issues released on the same day
You can find the issues digitally on Amazon (formerly comiXology) link https://t.co/e4xMWUOT2x
You can also find the issue in other places if you were to Google "spyhunter paperboy viewcomic"
The series is written by Larry Hama with art by Mac Rey, and letters by Pat Brosseau and it features a crossover between two old video game franchises, Spy Hunter and Paper Boy. There are very few details publicly available about the book - all 6 issues were quietly released as "Digital first" in May 2021 without any sort of fanfare or publicity by DC. There was really nothing in the comic itself that explained what the series was or why it existed and never had a print release. This is some of the best GI Joe like work by Hama since his prime in the 80s at Marvel with some stunning art. You can read the series and listen or listen and then read it or just listen, whatever!. There are a few spoilers but we've tried not to go too heavy on details of plot.
Mac Rey (artist) - Arkansas resident, Mathew “Mac Rey” Reynolds started out in comics back in the early days of Malibu on books like AIRMAN and THE PROTECTORS, more recently he has worked on THE MERCENARY SEA from Image Comics. And “The RUFF and REDDY SHOW” from DC comics. After working on a creator-owned project called VIC FALCON with G.I. JOE writer Larry Hama, they went on to work together on Spy Hunter & Paper Boy.
Spy Hunter: a vehicular combat action game developed by Bally Midway and released for arcades in 1983. The object of the game is to drive down roads in the technologically advanced the fictitious G-6155 Interceptor car and destroy various enemy vehicles with a variety of onboard weapons.
Paperboy is an arcade action game developed and published by Atari Games and Midway Games, and released in 1985. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called The Daily Sun along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to many home systems beginning in 1986.

This episode was recorded with video so it is relatively visual - particularly on the cover gallery section. The YouTube link is here https://youtu.be/snu2AMOZjq4

However it should still work as audio only. If you are listening audio only let me know what you think.

Mark and Tim talk about Void rivals #1 released 14 June 2023 . It’s the launchpad of the Hasbro Energon Universe at the new home of GI Joe, Skybound! We are joined by Josh “After Action Report” Eggebeen who tells us all about his scavenger hunt for the issue 1 variant covers – “Gotta catch’ em all!”

We talk about what we think of this issue, but also what it might mean for the wider Energon Universe.
