The other day someone posted something like "If you'll just take the time to get organized, life will be easier." Usually, I would find that to be true and agree with it. When I read the post, I had spent 6 hours the day before cleaning, and looked around me; kid clutter was everywhere. The daily demands of motherhood at face value don't seem like much, but like a steady dripping, it can become overwhelming. I've followed Whitney for a while and know not everything has been easy for her, but it's lovely to watch her turn trials into worship.
Early in my 20s, I had a series of wildly unjust things happen. I've since been able to recognize them as really unhealthy behaviors. But during that time Psalm 16 became a favorite. What led you to love 121? -
When I became a mom, I thought I would be AMAZING. It's so hard to know how sleep deprivation and very demanding humans will impact you. My mother-in-law told me, "I didn't know how sinful I was until I became a mom." I smiled to myself thinking I had strong self-control. For the first kid and the first couple years I coped okay, but as years ticked on I started to realize exactly how true her statement was. How do you think faith can help a mom navigate the difficult days?
I've noticed what I think about changes the way I walk through a day. Are there some things you meditate on that help your mood?
When things get hard there is the temptation to stay at home, buckle down, and batten the hatches. Do you find that to be helpful or does it end up making things worse?

In David, we find a “type.” God sets him up as king and a good kingdom on earth to show us what he wants to do in Heaven. Under the first half of David’s rule, people find peace, prosperity, and justice. But we also see David sin dramatically and the peace is broken. We are left longing for a true and better king!
When we understand this promise of “kingdom” to David it allows us to better understand our longing for perfect leadership. But we realize we can’t ever find this fulfilled in human form. Earthly leaders will always let us down, but God is the ultimate ruler in our lives.
Revelation 21:4 gives us a peek at what the coming kingdom will look like! Jesus will establish the ultimate kingdom. We can have hope knowing that the way the world looks here and now isn’t the way it “should be” and will “always be.” Our God is a just king who will bring rest from enemies, make an end to death, crying, and pain!

I did not grow up in a tradition that practiced Lent, and honestly, I've not read or studied anything about it as a practice. What I do know is a lot of people announce they are giving social media up for Lent, and I know it is the time that leads up to Easter. It seems kind of like Advent, but I could be totally off. When I saw Amy Gannett had written a resource for lent I wanted to learn all about it, but rather than just voice messaging her all my questions I thought it might be fun to learn about lent together!

Why do churches kick it off with ashes on the forehead? (that's different from Advent in that it's starting with the end in mind)

The beautiful thing about the law is that it gives a glimpse of what God values. In it is love, justice, and peace. It leads us to a better relationship with God and one another. But we can’t live it perfectly.
What Romans shows us is that the law does something even more beautiful for us now. It shows us the gifts we are given in Christ. We are no longer held back by the law alone but empowered into growth by the Holy Spirit. Through God’s work, we more naturally produce the Fruit of the Spirit.

Last time Amber and I talked she taught me the concept of literature being "mirrors and windows." That means the gift we get through books is our own experiences reflected(mirrors), but they also allow us to peek into someone else's world (windows). Viewing books this way has made me better balance the selections I'm choosing to read, so they feel like they belong, but also develop empathy!
I noticed you've featured in your work "mirrors and windows" again but now you've also added "sliding glass doors!" Tell me about that!
Your newest project is a whole book full of book recommendations! How has reading become such an important piece of your family's life?
How do you choose books for your kids? Do you primarily stick to books that focus on joy, or sometimes hard history too?
How do you decide when a kid is old enough to be exposed to a hard topic?
How have you made sure the books you use in homeschool don't fall down a particular rabbit hole and spread a wide feast?

As our verse reveals, on this side of eternity we feel homeless. We long for something, someone, or someplace better. Jesus’ death to take the punishment of the broken covenant, allows us the favor of all that was promised. Believers can now look forward to eternal belonging in a heavenly land.

Our homes have become places where we go to escape the rest of the world. A phrase I heard a few weeks ago has stuck with me as we are experiencing "self-imposed solitude." With that mentality has come rising depression.
Our homes have gotten bigger, but the entertaining spaces aren't. Our private areas are expanding.

The Psalm you read this week points to the promise of preservation. The continuation of days reveals that we are held by the one who holds the world. God has not held our sins against us but placed them on his son. We are sent with the great commission to “Go tell all the world...”

When God came in the cool of the evening he told them their rebellion would bring death, pain, and corruption. Then God killed a lamb (sacrifice), provided clothes to cover them(memorial), and made a promise. One would come who would defeat the power of the serpent.
Because of Genesis 3:25, Psalm 91 makes sense. God isn’t promising we will never face trouble, but that he will be our ultimate deliverer. He did the work of conquering evil on our behalf and the cost fell on him. He was bruised so we would not be consumed and makes a way for us to be ultimately protected in the coming kingdom.

Sometimes my passion for being in the Word starts to wilt a little bit. Chatting with people who love Jesus and reading his word encourages me to see it in a new light, or inspire me to dig in deeper. I've met with Maggie a couple of times in person at conferences and I'm always inspired by her passion for studying the Bible! I

The past couple of months I’ve found myself constantly overstimulated. Then I started to notice that every time I had a quiet moment I popped my air pods in to listen to an audio book, or podcast. I started to wonder if I was stealing from myself all of the moments of silence that would naturally have occurred in my day and filled them with noise. I picked up Sarah’s newest book and found the words were exactly what I needed.
In your opening, you said you’ve found beauty in the contemplatives, even though that isn’t what this book is about. I'm particularly interested in this because it's something that's been coming up in my own circles quite a few times. What have they shown you about quiet, and how is your practice different?
What do you “do” while you’re quiet? Or do you sit and stare off?
As humans, do you think we generally see “Quiet” as a negative or a positive? How has it been both to you?
A line at the beginning of your book caught my attention it was something “I began to wonder if at times my smartphone had become my replacement for the Holy Spirit, the ever-present comforter I turned to in times of fear.” How do we begin to rewire these impulses?
Many of us crave quiet, especially mothers, how do you find quiet in the noise of the little years?
How is quiet essential to our spiritual lives and well-being?
You’ve talked before about the part that OCD has played in your story. In your last book the telling of how you found your way to faith through beauty in the face of the darkness of OCD. Do you think the quiet you’ve learned to find has come in the place of the loudness of OCD? If so how do you think it’s taught you the value of it, or allowed you to point others to the gift of quiet?

On Risen Motherhood Laura has talked about how motherhood is joy-filled and hard. The two are so intertwined it can feel a bit like a moment-to-moment rollercoaster. (I'm the best/I'm the worst) Laura reminds us that hard life circumstances can lead us back to the foot of the cross. When we are weak it shows how desperately we need Jesus. But how? When we are already sipping cold coffee while doing the sink full of dirty dishes? How do we cultivate a deeper relationship with Jesus?
How has life looked the way you expected it to, and how is it different from what you expected?
I've found I haven't understood the beauty of the gospel until everything started to go off the rails. What was that moment for each of you?
Were you tempted to navigate toward a parenting formula? What caused you to steer away from that?
On the podcast before we've talked about how we run into discontentment when we compare ourselves to all the moms (ie crunchy mom, athletic mom, homeschool mom, stay-at-home mom) You take it a step further and say the problem is coming from what we define ourselves by entirely. Can you talk more about that?
Practically, how do we begin to define ourselves by who God says we are to become "Gospel Moms?"

Praising God’s work is a theme we can trace through the whole Bible. It’s often after God has shown Himself the mighty rescuer of His people. Christ’s death allowed people outside of Israel to enter His church. This expansion of his kingdom gives us even more reason to celebrate His salvation with one another.

The more we understand how loved we are, the easier it is to proactively love those who are put into our lives. I want to wrap up with 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.” When we imitate the love of Christ it is a glimpse of the kingdom He is bringing.

When we understand His glory it doesn’t just sit in our own hearts, but it’s contagious in the best possible way. When we see and understand what He’s done for us, it begins to ooze out of us. Spreading love and joy to those around us. This is just one piece of the way the Kingdom of Heaven brings peace on earth!

In our modern Christmas traditions, it is tempting to rush past the dark and quiet places of waiting. Advent will slow you down to remember the darkness before He came. It also allows for reflection on our own current human experience. Yes, Christ has come and we have so much to rejoice in. Yet, practically, we live in a world that is still incredibly broken.
As you remember the longing it allows you, as you wait, to know that God is faithful. When time stretches thin, He is there even if you can’t see how He will work right now!
