  • Hello to you listening in Lake Worth, Florida!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Working with my clients I become deeply involved in their Creation or Origin Stories. Creation stories provide important information about culture, values, ancestors and so forth that are passed down from generation to generation through storytelling. These stories inform our lives and help us create our own professional and personal stories.

Often we imagine that only our good, wise, best choices and opportunities deserve to be part of our Creation story. Not so! I’m here to tell you, “Out of a whole lifetime, by God, sometimes the only thing that saves a person is error, and I know that we shall not be saved so long as our error is not precious to us.” [Clarice Lispector, from the story “Mineirinho”]

You see, when we embrace our wrong turns, dead ends, mistakes and missteps as being precious to us, we can learn who we are not, who we are not meant to be, what we are not called to do. In our errors we find our very own powerful Creation story.

My clients ask me how to find the powerful Creation story that belongs to them and where to start. I tell them: “Just pretend like it will all make sense if you simply begin.” And. It. Does.

Story Prompt: When have your errors and missteps guided you to the heart of your narrative? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story.

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!

  • Hello to you listening in Colville, Washington!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Recently I was asked: How are you disrupting the status quo narratives? How and where are you sharing your stories, and encouraging others to tell theirs?

I believe that I listen keenly to stories and then tell the world something it needs to hear. How do I do that? I’ve designed my daily 60 Seconds podcast episodes to help shift the status quo narratives so we - especially women - are seen, heard, understood, and listened to. Whether it’s words of poetry, a page from my life story, something to ponder as you wander, or a story prompt to invite you to begin your own writing, I now have over 1,100 global episodes inviting us to shift attitudes, behaviors, and even culture.

As Quarter Moon Story Arts I help women discover and uncover their origin or personal brand story because it's the most consequential one they will ever tell: how they got from There to Here. I'm a storyteller who believes in the power of the spoken word. There are few words more powerful than those spoken by women. I help professional women find the words they didn't know they had to connect with, engage and influence their audience while transforming the lives of those they serve. That’s what I stand for.

CTA: If you are curious about how to create a ruckus with your words, disrupt the status quo narratives with your story, connect and engage with the power of your voice, contact me for a no obligation, no sales, no pressure Discovery Chat at [email protected] or on LinkedIn. There are stories waiting to be told and heard. They are yours.

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!

Recently, I had the pleasure of sharing the mic as co-host with my friend, colleague, podcast host, author, and genuinely curious human being, Jeff Ikler, Quetico Coaching about the mission of Casting for Recovery. CFR is a national nonprofit serving women with breast cancer using the therapeutic sport of fly fishing. Our guest is Susan Gaetz, the executive director for Casting for Recovery.

If you are curious to learn how this remarkable idea was launched, and how 30 years later CFR continues to help comfort, support, and heal women battling breast cancer, this very special episode is for you. Join us!

    Three Highlights:

    • Healing Through Nature: Casting for Recovery offers unique retreats specifically designed for women breast cancer survivors. By combining fly fishing with oncology support, these getaways provide a chance for women to reconnect with nature, build confidence, and find solace in a supportive community.

    • The Power of Fly Fishing: More than just a hobby, fly fishing offers therapeutic benefits for recovering women. The gentle act of casting helps with physical rehabilitation and provides a welcome distraction, keeping both mind and body active.

    • Beyond the Reel: Casting for Recovery goes beyond the basics of fly fishing. Their approach focuses on empowering women, building competence and comfort in the outdoors, and fostering lasting connections among survivors.

From the novel Love in the Time of Cholera: “He allowed himself to be swayed by his conviction that human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but that life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.” [ ~ Gabriel García Márquez]

Our rebirth manifests as a story, and another, and another, and another.

In my very earliest days as a beginning storyteller I learned 3 lessons that helped develop my role as a “story doula” or midwife to stories.

One. Each person knows the story they want to tell; all they need is someone to listen it out of them.

Two. When we listen the story out of another we do so with respect, delight, and appreciation.

Three. Listening out the story in this way awakens the creative intelligence of the storyteller.

Story Prompt: What rebirth are you listening for? Write that story!

There is a gift in hindsight!

Hindsight can show us how a breakdown becomes a breakthrough, a spiritual crisis becomes a spiritual awakening, a trail of tears becomes the trail of gratitude.

It has to be hindsight because when we’re swamped by difficult situations we feel scared, uncertain, anxious, or worse. Then time passes.

Now, we can look at the gift in what we perceived as complete and utter failure to create a new life, share our ideas, grow our business, and so on.

What we perceived as failure becomes the opportunity we could not appreciate when we were feeling like a loser.

    Time and hindsight become growth.

Story Prompt: Think about a time when it looked like you had failed miserably, but with time and hindsight you grasped the opportunity for a do-over. What happened then? Write that story!

  • Hello to you listening in Port Townsend, Washington!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.

Admiralty Head Lighthouse harkens back to the day of sailing ships powered by wind. When the ships entered the Strait of San Juan de Fuca from the Pacific Ocean the ship captain would know to steer a hard right to starboard when he saw the blazing beacon from the Lighthouse high on a bluff 127 feet above Admiralty Inlet before continuing safely south to Puget Sound and on into Seattle. Each lighthouse - no matter where in the world - has its very own distinctive light pattern, or signature. Lighthouses mark points of navigation, warn about dangerous coastlines, and guide ships into a safe harbor.

But not all harbors are created equal for all boats. Some are for deep draft vessels, others for pleasure craft, and so on. Here’s the thing about a lighthouse: it doesn’t run up and down the coast beckoning all boats to its harbor. It serves a specifically sized boat.

Question: Lighthouses don’t chase boats; why do you chase clients? What is it only you have to offer? Who needs it and wants it? How will you attract your particular client with your very own distinctive beacon of light? And, how will they know you are signaling them?

Call to Action: If this episode resonates with you and you’re looking for someone to help navigate you and your message, contact me on LinkedIn or Quarter Moon Story Arts for a no-sales complimentary consult.

Folks ask me: What was the most difficult lesson on my Camino de Santiago pilgrimage? Letting go. Letting go of the way I was. Letting go of my old self. Giving myself over to the walking.

You think it’s easy? Get up in the dark, pack in the dark, head out in the dark. Walk 15 or 20 miles a day, no matter how hot or cold or wet. No matter how rocky or lonesome or tired. Nothing prepares you for walking Camino but to walk Camino. How do you do it? Here’s a tip: surrender. Give yourself over. You are here now. Make the most of it. When you want to stomp around and make furious gestures, make the most of that. Make the most of your joys and complaints. Give voice to them all.

And then give yourself back to the only job you have: to walk. Every day my Camino lesson shows up like this: “Just walk it off, Diane!”

Question: What single-minded purpose of yours guides you along your way?

“Story is a way to resurrect our humanity so that we can engage and connect with others and transform the lives of those we serve.” [Diane Wyzga]

We are all “living stories.” The best stories usually arise from the pivotal moments of our lives. Why? People face hardships. Our hardships show us the way to recovery. When we tell our stories - when we give ourselves permission to express that wounded, vulnerable, authentic side - those who hear our story can say, “What! You, too? I thought I was the only one.” [C.S. Lewis] And now that I know I’m not alone I, too, can summon the courage to get myself from Here to There.

Story Prompt: When have you given yourself permission to tell yourself about how you overcame hardship? What happened next? Write that story!

Maybe like me you grew up at a time when children were supposed to be seen and not heard. I ask you! What child doesn’t want to be heard? And yet society worked hard to quiet our voices. In time I was able to say, "Hey! Nobody asked me about being quiet. I want to be seen, heard, understood and listened to!" I had to work at saying what I mean and meaning what I say.

It’s not just words. No two voices are alike. Each voice has a singular tone, an energetic imprint that’s all its own. Our voices have the power to heal, to hurt, to love, and to transform others. When we are aware of the impact our voices can have, we can consciously choose what we are expressing, and how we are making ourselves heard.

It’s your voice. It was made to be heard. When we take responsibility for the power our voice has to shift attitudes and behaviors, unbalance the status quo, and create harmony and compassion in the universe, that’s the place where we become seen and heard.

Question: How do you plan to become seen and heard today?

What is vocation? Frederick Buechner says, “...it’s the place where your deep gladness meets the world’s deep hunger.

What a long time it can take to discover, to be called to your deep identity, your true self who came here with your very own vocation. Yes, for some of us it can be a long way to find out who we’ve always been and then to become that. We may wish to try on the selves of other people but at the end of the day the question still remains: Why are you not you?

It was a very long walk but I found my way as Quarter Moon Story Arts.

Story Prompt: Who are you when you are your truest self? Where does your deep gladness meet the world’s deep hunger? Write that story!

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you please subscribe, spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!

We’ve had days of continuous rain; but I’ve discovered an antidote to cabin fever: walking the deep woods on my island. In the forest I’m reminded of the reciprocity of the universe - the give and take between us and the highest of powers.

In her book Native: Identity, Belonging, and Rediscovering God Kaitlin B. Curtice asks: “What is it about a walk in the woods to remind us about the reciprocity of the universe? What do I mean? The bloodline of God is connected to everything . . . shells on the ocean shore, the mushrooms growing in the forest, the trees stretching to the clouds, the tiniest speck of snow in the winter, and our dust-to-dustness—we are all connected and tethered to this sacred gift of creation.” [Kaitlin B. Curtice, Native: Identity, Belonging, and Rediscovering God]

Question: How does it feel when you are deeply connected, when you know that where you are is where you belong?

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you please subscribe, spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!

  • Hello to you listening in Reykjavik, Iceland!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with your host, Diane Wyzga.

Recently, a friend and colleague asked me if I might have “a balanced, introspective, and helpful word or two that would help us pause and think about the passage of time, priorities, where/who/what is the “center” around which life and time revolves.”

This is the way I would say it if I could say it this way:

In the richly imagined novel, Mink River by Brian Doyle a medal is being awarded to a small town cop who helped stop a terrible man from hurting others but suffered terrible injuries himself as a result. Listen to what is said on pages 309 and 310.

Thank you for your prompt, David Reynolds! Click HERE to access David’s book, Lead Learn Change, on Amazon.

Story Prompt: What would you like to say to “help us pause and think about the passage of time, priorities, where/who/what is the “center” around which life and time revolves"? Write that story!

Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story.

You’re always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
