  • Lucy Bloom is a published author and international keynote speaker who lives in Sydney. When she was 18 she had a massive motorcycle accident on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and spent a year in hospital, and it forced her to grow up fast. While all her friends were out partying, she was starting her own advertising agency, and marrying a man from the nightclub she worked at. She’s recently given up drinking for the third time, and we spoke about Holly Whittaker’s book ‘Quit Like A Woman’ that has helped her think about her choice in terms that feel more related to her. Lucy is super funny, and one of the smartest people I know. Enjoy!

  • Jason Mack is a podcaster and music promoter based in Melbourne. His podcast ‘What We Did On The Weekend’ with Mathew Burgess has grown in the last few years to be one of the focal points of the Australian heavy music scene. In 2021 after some heavy drinking during lockdown and a scary moment k-holing live on Twitch, he decided to cut out alcohol for good. We sat down in his apartment in Brunswick to talk about that decision, as well as his life growing up in Frankston, and leaving it all behind to move to Melbourne at 30. This was one of my favourite conversations so far, even just for the goss about The Tote. Enjoy!

  • Michael Shafar is a stand up comedian from Melbourne, currently based in London. We’ve known each other and been friends for years, but I still didn’t really know that much about Shaf’s family life other than the fact that he’s Jewish. In this wonderful conversation he told me some stories about his grandparents surviving Nazi death camps in WWII, and explained various elements of Jewish culture and community to me. I’ve been thinking a lot about the way that I used to use drinking to deal with difficult moments/feelings in life, and how that is definitely something I learned from the wider culture I was raised in. The Jewish culture that Shafar is a part of doesn’t quite see alcohol in the same way, and we spoke about how different cultures have different responses to life’s hardships, and where that might come from. Super interesting chats with an incredibly smart and funny man who I’m glad to call a friend. Enjoy!

  • Prue Blake is a stand up comedian based in Melbourne, she toured her first hour ‘Unfriended’ to Australian festivals this year and has always been so funny on stage as well as off. Prue always seems to have a great bit of gossip ready to go, and when we sat down during her Melbourne Comedy Festival run she ran me through the central story of her show which was one of the juiciest bits of gossip I’ve ever heard. We talked about growing up in Brisbane, moving to Melbourne, and discovered what seems to be an incredibly healthy relationship with drinking! We also talked about town planning for five minutes which I honestly loved. Enjoy!

  • Nick Capper grew up on a farm on the border of NSW and QLD. When his parents warned him about peer pressure as a kid he never thought he’d give in to it, but now at 40 he’s realising just how impressionable he is. Nick is one of the most unique and memorable stand up comics in Australia, but not only is he full of hilariously comic absurdities, he has also lived a life! From going to boarding school in Tamworth, to couch surfing around South America, to fighting off cancer in his late 30s, Capper has been right through it, and his attitude to alcohol and drinking has evolved too.

  • Anna Beros is a stand up comedian who grew up in Brighton in Melbourne, but has been living in Berlin for the last 7 years. She produces a bunch of great stand up shows out there in what is one of the strongest English-language comedy scenes in Europe. She also quit drinking recently and when we sat down to chat I found out we have had pretty similar experiences with booze, and have a fairly similar outlook on whether it could eventually have a place in our lives. I love talking to Anna, she is so funny and open, even when talking about some difficult stuff like her relationship with her father as we did in here. Enjoy!

  • Dane Simpson is a stand up comedian based out of Wagga Wagga in country NSW, he's performed on the biggest stages in the country including the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala and Roadshow. He is a proud Gamilaraay man, and what I've always loved about Dane's comedy is the honest simplicity of his stories, and the lightness and fun he brings to everything he talks about. We sat down after his last show in the Melbourne Comedy Festival this year to talk about his family, and growing up in Walgett and Wagga where he made a living for years as a nightclub and festival DJ before turning to stand up comedy. We spoke for 40 minutes but still only scratched the surface! Enjoy.

  • Milo Edwards is a stand up comedian and podcaster based in London. He's the co-host of the hilarious tech/politics podcast 'TRASHFUTURE', and tours critically acclaimed stand up shows around the UK, as well as coming to Australia for this year's Melbourne Comedy Festival. We met years ago doing an absolutely horrific gig on the south coast of England, and have been wonderful chums ever since. Milo is one of the quickest minds out there and he always makes me laugh when we're on podcasts together, which is why he was actually the first person I interviewed for this podcast! We spoke about growing up in Essex and the drinking culture there, as well as the time he punched the school rugby captain in the face. Enjoy!

  • Jordan Barr is a stand up comic and actor based in Melbourne. She studied musical theatre at VCA and thought she was destined for a career in that world, but around the time she was finishing her studies she started to second-guess her trajectory. We spoke about the panic of reassessing your whole career, as well as the panic of waking up in the morning and not knowing who to apologise to. I love Jordan, she's such an easy person to talk to, so funny, and I really enjoyed the conversation we had here! I hope you do too.

She grew up in Perth before moving to Melbourne a few years ago and we sat down to chat as she was in the middle of her incredibly successful first solo run at the Melbourne Comedy Festival!
