  • Natanya Brooks joins us for Episode 106 of Sports ‘N Torts. Natanya is a lawyer in Atlanta, which of course we discussed. However, we spent the bulk of this podcast talking about her experience as a swimmer who through hard work, grit, and dedication earned a scholarship to swim collegiately at Georgia Tech. Swimming has had a profound effect on her life and has installed the values that set her up for success in life.

We had a great discussion about youth sports. Natanya talked about how to maximize the youth sports experience for children while making it fun and keeping them competitive. We discuss time management, early mornings in the pool and what it takes to succeed. A former swim coach, Natanya has strong feelings on “burn out” and shares her tips on raising successful athletes.

We talked about when she realized that college swimming was a possibility and her recruitment process. Natanya talked about her college experience to include the connections made and how it prepared her for business and her law practice. We talked about the different trips she has taken involving swimming and being in the water.

In 2018, Natanya founded Brooks Injury Law to have the opportunity to make a real difference in the life of others. Natanya wanted to bring individuals and families out of despair through recovery and to work with families to honor and comfort those who are not able to recover from their injuries.

Natanya has implemented different marketing strategies and has followed the growth. Her goal for Brooks Injury Law was to always be able to help clients in need. As clients began to ask for help in different areas of personal injury law, instead of turning them away, she decided to expand our team. She was always well-equipped to handle road wrecks but as premises cases like negligent security shootings came in, we were able to bring in additional attorneys to handle the complex legal issues and appellate work that comes with those cases. Next, a medical malpractice branch was added to the firm, followed by a products, civil rights, and class action practice area. She has done just that with her firm now employing 9 lawyers and 25+ staff.

  • Episode 99 of Sports ‘N Torts is a special one! Parag Shah – CEO of Miles Mediation and Arbitration – issued a challenged. If we could raise $10,000 to support Side by Side Clubhouse he would come on the podcast and shave his head live! Well, thanks to all of your generosity we raised over $25,000!! Amazing. The donations came in from two camps: the Snip Squad (those who wanted to shave Parag’s hair) and the Lock Lovers (those who wanted to save Parag’s hair). In the end, both camps raised over $10,000 so we were left with no choice but to take the issue to Judge Hydrick from the Superior Court of Dekalb County for a ruling on who win’s … Judge Hydrick issued an Order in favor of the Snip Squad so Parag’s head was shaved live on the podcast! Chris the Barber put Parag in the chair and gave him a nice clean shave. Parag has been growing his hair since 2019 so this was an epic and emotional event. We even hear from Parag's wife as she watches his beautiful hair being cut off.

Charity and charitable giving is a big part of Parag’s life. As a lawyer, judge and TV personality, Parag talks about his background and rising to the CEO of Miles. He discusses the business, their mission, and their charitable arm – Miles for Smiles. Parag discusses when, why and how Side by Side became important to him and the ways in which he participates with their members.

Side by Side Clubhouse (www.sidebysideclubhouse.org) is the only work-oriented day program in Georgia that specifically supports adults with brain injuries and their families. Their Executive Director, Josh Blackmon, joined the podcast to talk about his background, what brought him to Side by Side, the mission of the organization and how they will put the funds raised to good use. We even heard from the “Mayor of Side By Side” JR Copeland about his story and how Side by Side saved his life.

  • My 2004 UGA Law School Classmate Erica Parson and her husband, Mark Stewart, join the podcast in a hilarious, information and feel good episode. We sampled some Old Fashions and had a great time. Raised in Montgomery, AL, Erica spent her undergraduate years at Auburn University studying English and French. She worked in the South of France at the Festival d’Avignon for a summer and once she came to terms with the fact that she likely would not achieve her lifelong dream of becoming Queen of England,  she decided to take her talents for zealous advocacy to the University of Georgia School of Law. She was so devoted to UGA’s advocacy program that Erica (and her husband Mark) have the unique honor of being the only couple to ever be married in the Hatton-Lovejoy Courtroom at the law school.

After graduating from UGA, Erica began her practice in coastal Alabama, but relocated to Atlanta where she spent nearly two decades in Atlanta focusing her practice on general liability and automobile insurance defense, bad faith and coverage litigation with several major defense firms in the city.   She is licensed to practice in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee and has successfully litigated cases in both state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels.

In 2020, Erica and her husband relocated to Rabun County, where she worked remotely and began to reimagine her career.  Inspired by the work he had done over the years, Erica reached out to Arman about embarking on a new chapter together. With two decades of litigation experience, Erica has developed a uniquely measured approach to the practice of law that centers on compassion, understanding, and integrity with a healthy dose of good humor and a touch of irreverence. Erica lives by the wise wisdom of Roadhouse’s James Dalton: ‘All you have to do is follow three simple rules.  One, never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected. Two, take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary. And three, be nice. . . until it’s time to not be nice.’”

Erica recently moved to Auburn, Alabama with her husband Mark and three dogs Waylon, Jesse and Hank so they could all be closer to family. She set up shop in the Columbus office and, in addition to her Georgia cases, is handling the firm’s Alabama and Tennessee cases, usually with Waylon and/or Jesse in the office with her.

  • James Robson from the Atlanta law firm of Glass Robson joins this weeks podcast in another great episode. James and his partner, Robert Glass, met in Law School and 10 years ago started their own personal injury firm. James has a diverse background working for one of the largest defense firms in the state and also two of the most successful Plaintiffs lawyers in the state. James talks about how these prior experiences shaped the lawyer he is, the law firm he has created and the way he approaches his case.

By way of an example, James recently secured a $4M+ jury verdict. We talk all about this car wreck case and get into the weeds of the trial. James talks about his preparation, strategy and the arguments that resonated with the jury. We talk about what makes a case go to trial and how to prepare clients for the experience. We talk about the appeal process and what it means when a case “is appealed” after a big verdict.

Outside of the office James is an adventurous guy. Always looking for his next challenge, James has completed 4 marathons and has now turned his attention to mountain climbing. And not the “hiking” version but the mountaineering version with handholds, footholds and all the things. James just returned from the Grand Tetons and he tells us the itinerary and the process to reach the summit up 13,000 feet.

And don’t forget to check out our March 5, 2024 event at Side By Side Charity. We are actively raising money to shave Parag Shah’s head. It would mean the world to us if you clicked on this link and considered donating.

Alvaro has been working for law firms around the country (and internationally) for over 25 years. He shares his time tested tips that have helped countless lawyers realize the firms of their dreams. We go over his four truth and he explains what they all mean and why they are important:

    1. A brilliant attorney doesn't always equate to an accomplished business owner.

    2. The success of a firm depends not just on your skill in the courtroom or conference room, but on your leadership skills and ability to comply with the rules of the game. Compliance mistakes are some of the most costly and destructive for any law practice.

    3. Some of the most skilled lawyers find difficulty in running their offices efficiently. Inefficiency is the root of failure.

    4. 3a. law management helps attorneys translate their innate advocacy into a successful practice. We help lawyers identify and eliminate their weaknesses and create purposeful and effective new habits.

Originally, from NY, Jonathan moved to Atlanta to attend Emory Law School and has lived here ever since (except for a brief stint in with his family in Mississippi running a Mexican restaurant).      Along the way, Jonathan defended medical malpractice cases for one of the largest defense firms in Georgia until he founded a personal injury Plaintiffs firm which focused on medical malpractice and nursing home abuse cases. Jonathan tells us how nursing home abuses are developed and what it takes to win them. We talk about professionalism and how he views his role as a lawyer. • Steven Lefkoff from Lefkoff Law in Atlanta, GA joins us for the final episode of Sports 'N Torts in 2023. A native of Atlanta (and my old next door neighbor), Steven has built and designed his law firm to carry out his vision of how a small business should operate. Lefkoff Law offers a wide array of legal services for businesses. The firm represents clients in matters ranging from litigation and compliance, to risk management and contract review, and so much in between. The firm has a specialized focus on representing companies in the motor vehicle space, including financial institutions, motor vehicle dealers, and warranty and insurance providers. Lefkoff Law also protects clients’ rights in Fair Business Practices Act matters and other business disputes.

In addition to these legal services, Steven is always working on a new fresh approach to his practice to include recent additions of Small Claims 101 – training and consulting for Magistrate and The Driveway – a monthly membership program designed to provide exceptional value in holistic legal services. Hear how he came up with these ideas, how he implemented them, why they are important to his clients and how they have created unexpected growth for other areas of his firm.

Steven is very good at working ON his business in addition to IN his business. He talks about his firms 18 month plan, planned growth, using automation to increase efficiency and defined roles for his employees. Lots of great business nuggets to pick up here. Finally, I consider Steven a very creative marketer. In a landscape full of lawyers trying to stand out with marketing efforts, Steven goes about it the right way and he shares some his secrets such as personalized pictures and dinners at Waffle House.

Last but not least - Steven taught me how to create this podcast and I forever grateful for his advice!
