Charles Johnson has dedicated his life to the pursuit of what his own family failed to receive – safe, respectful, & equitable maternal health outcomes in America. His passion for systemic change is driven by his love for his wife, Kira, who passed away following the birth of their second child. In April 2016, Kira underwent a routine c-section following an uncomplicated pregnancy. Hours later, she died from internal hemorrhaging despite adamant pleas for help from medical professionals by her husband and loved ones. Her story exemplifies the current crises happening in America: rising rates of maternal mortality and the silencing of Black voices. After experiencing the unimaginable, Charles harnessed his pain and used it to pursue the highest level of good. He channeled his grief into founding 4Kira4Moms, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving birth outcomes in America. Charles knows childbirth should be empowering and free of fear for all mothers. 4Kira4Moms advocates for improved maternal health policies and regulations, educates about the impact of maternal mortality in our communities, provides support to victims’ loved ones, and approaches maternal mortality as a human rights issue.

Mothers are the very framework of our society.

They teach us how to love unconditionally and are willing to protect the most vulnerable among us. The loss of even one at the hands of an unjust system robs our country of what it needs most.
Charles has used his voice and story to advocate for change at countless events and media appearances all over the country. He is a board member of March for Moms and serves as Chairman of the Fairness of Injured Patients Act, which seeks to restore the rights of victims of medical negligence in California. Charles has testified twice before Congress and helped pass key legislation including: the Preventing Maternal Death Act of 2018, the Protecting Moms Who Served Act of 2021, and the California Momnibus. He is currently working with Congress to pass the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act of 2021, an unprecedented set of bills addressing every aspect of the maternal health crisis happening in America.

Charles was also honored by Oprah Winfrey on OWNSpotlight’s 2020 fatherhood special entitled, “Honoring our Kings – Celebrating Black Fatherhood.”
In addition to his advocacy work, Charles is busy raising his two beautiful boys, Charles V and Langston, who keep their mothers’ spirit alive powerfully every day.

My name is Caitlyn and I am the owner and founder of Lila. Some may know me as Mrs. United States 2020, some know me simply as the creator of the viral Tik Tok labor gown. I originally designed my birth gowns after spending years working as a Labor and Delivery nurse and as a birth doula. I have never cared for the use of hospital gowns in the labor and delivery setting. Their design may make some sense for sick patients receiving care inpatient, but pregnant people are not sick. Laboring women and birthing people should be free to wear (or not wear) anything they want, and experience labor and birth in whichever way makes them feel most comfortable.

Thank you Amy Bauer for joining us to discuss her journey to a Doula Agency owner, advocate and grandmother of 5.

This episode will give you insights on the role of a Doula in pregnancy and birth- how agencies can support both clients and the staff of doulas differently than an independent doula and understanding how they advocate in the delivery room.

Download the Pocket Doula App in the App Store or Google Play Store!

    Learn More About Amy
My journey began with having my own babies and experiencing birth on my own terms with the help of my doula. Prior to experiencing childbirth, I had heard such terrible stories from others that left me in fear, but after having had positive and empowering births myself, I wanted to attempt to pass that gift on to others. I supported my first birth in the role of a doula mere months after my oldest was born. It wasn't long, however, before my mission to support individual women through their births wasn't enough. Working in the system underscored the need for more comprehensive efforts to make change. This brought out the activist in me which resulted in joining forces with organizations like Improving Birth and 2020Mom, and participating for several years in events such as Improving Birth Rallies, Mom Congress, and March for Moms. In the wake of these efforts some positive changes began to be visible in general awareness of maternity care issues, and perhaps more importantly, I began to see ways to "be the change" locally in my own community. To that end, in 2017, I started Indiana's first doula agency, Hoosier Doula Network, as a way to improve access to doula care for women and to make doula work more supported and sustainable. This brings us to today. Hoosier Doula is a thriving success with 10 doulas and counting currently working with us in Northwest Indiana. However, there is still more work to be done...much more. This brings me to our latest project. We have developed an app called Pocket Doula to be a reliable information resource for parents throughout their pregnancy journey and into postpartum, to create community, and to help women find the resources they need to take back their births and to experience the joys and growing pains of early parenting in a fully equipped and supported way.
