  • Series 5, Episode 7 - "It looks like a Soundgarden video!"

We've been away for a little while but we're back with the next in our series of Romulan-themed reviews. Although if you're director Stuart Baird you may wish we weren't. Yes, this time around we're heading to the big screen. Mike and D.K are joined by first time guests Justin and Nita to discuss the critically reviled movie that some claim killed off the franchise for a while; Star Trek: Nemesis. Talking dune buggies, Nosferatu rip-offs, a young Tom Hardy and so much more. So have Troi take the helm and prepare for ramming speed, it's going to get bumpy...

Cult Classics returns to the world of animation this month as we take a look at the 1980s seminal anime and adaptation of the Otomo 1982 manga classic, Akira. Oh no, those dastardly Romulans have finally gotten D.K. They got sick of his insults and now he's off for "re-education", or at least sitting this episode out. This is also the last episode before we take a short mid-series break. But worry not, Captain Mike has recruited two fine guests; returning from our earlier "Unification I & II" review is Allison. She's joined by first-time guest, long-time fan and epic "audience response" contributor Justin. They'll be discussing, this can't be right, a nice, honourable & three-dimensional Romulan? Oh, D.K is gonna be mad he missed this. That's right, we're talking Telek & much R'mor (I see you groaning) as we peek through Harry Kim's micro wormhole (behave) to examine the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Eye of the Needle". Ignore that weird suspace variance and beam over to us now for an enjoyable, in-depth episode.

Yes, in honour of the release of 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' (in cinemas now) we're taking a look at it's immediate predecessor. Mike is hosting, ably assisted by fellow monster enthusiast D.K. They're joined by returning guest Michael Whaley (from our recent Ghostbusters review) and first-time Silver Screen guest Dag. They'll be talking all things Godzilla and King Kong, the MonsterVerse, Monarch, the beauty of fighting in a synth-wave album cover, logical leaps, epic monster fights, not so epic human acting and much more. This was an absolute blast to record, hopefully you enjoy the fun too as you join us taking a dive into the Hollow Earth and beyond.

  • Series 5, Episode 5 - "When you've got to hit the bondage club at 8 but destroy the Enterprise at 9."

Those sneaky Romulans are at it again! This time, they've got a secret plot to blow up DS9 and destroy the Bajoran Wormhole. And worst of all, they're asking Kira & Odo some very personal questions! It's up to a random, time-jumping Chief O'brien to stop the tragedy, because sure, why not? That's right folks, we're looking at the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Visionary". Mike is, as is usual, in the Captain's chair, but is joined once again by "number one" D.K. We also welcome first-time guest "Dag", who brings his own Trek wisdom and expertise to this review, along with some half-decent impressions, his favourite Trek things and more . So pop to Quark's for a game of darts, avoid the brawling Klingons, and if you see another you staring back at yourself then hope you've just had one too many. Feckin' temporal mechanics!

Welcome back, classic movie lovers, to the second episode of our new series looking at the legendary films of yesteryear. This time we're moving from 1940s Casablanca to 1950s Los Angeles, USA. That's right, we're looking at director Nicholas Ray's seminal coming-of-age cultural milestone 'Rebel Without a Cause'. Mike is joined once again by co-host D.K, along with special guest Laura Smith-Brese. The trio discuss the performances and tragic legacies of star James Dean, the representation of different genders' growing-up experiences played out by Dean and co-star Natalie Wood, and the cultural context in which this all takes place. There's also discussion about parental, generational trauma and screwing up, commenting on traditional 50s gender roles, and the barely disguised homosexuality at the core of supporting character "Plato". This and much more (yes, including mentioning Tommy blooming Wiseau). So slip on your red jacket, swig a pint of millk, and for goodness sake just ignore anybody that calls you chicken! Enjoy.

  • Series 5, Episode 4 - "Villains in the Trek franchise are notoriously hit or miss. No pun intended"

Well, last week in our continued look at Romulan-themed stories we reviewed the start of Spock's quest to unify the Vulcan & Romulan people. This week we warp ahead to the 32nd Century to "discover" the fruits of his labour: a unified Ni'var! That's right, we're looking (appropriately enough) at the Star Trek: Discovery episode "Unification III". Regular crew Mike and D.K are here, and it's a Discovery review so you know we once again roped in Disco superfan (and number 1 Ash Tyler obsessive) Jordan La Fordan. Michael is unimpressed by his namesake's God complex, blind luck and entitlement (but won over by Sonequa's outstanding acting). Jordan is intrigued to see more of the Qowat Milat. And D.K is just sitting back and watching the sparks fly. All this and so much more, including the regular Hit or Miss section and a tribute to the late, great Kenneth Mitchell. So settle in as we're going to Black Alert... Let's fly.

So sorry. But it's hard to keep these intros fresh after 5+ series. That's right folks, today our Romulan-focused "sen-sors" lead us to a review of a very special crossover two-parter of Star Trek: The Next Generation, entitled "Unification I & II". We have what's quickly being established as a regular crew this series with Mike, D.K & Adrienne all returning, joined by another guest this time as we welcome the lovely Allison (from our Top Ten Alien Ships breakdown) to her first proper Hit or Miss episode. There's talk of bad Romulan interior decorators, Dynasty shoulder pads, a truck load of audience's opinion, our own thoughts and so much more. • A CONVERSATION WITH DAVID MACK

Hi faithful podcast followers. Apologies that there is no review episode this weekend but we have a doozy of a treat for you in it's place. In honour of the release of his newest novel, Star Trek: Picard's 'Firewall', Mike & D.K were fortunate enough to chat with prolific best-selling Star Trek author, episode writer, consultant, lifelong Trekkie and all-round nice guy David Mack. We're talking about the new book's plot fleshing out Seven of Nine's unseen journey to the Fenris Rangers, her new love and her life post-Voyager. But we cover a lot more, including the state of intolerance in the world, the importance of representation, being an ally and writing for an LGBTQ audience (including avoiding harmful tropes). Mr. Mack also discusses his work on various other Trek books, including being responsible for ending a whole continuity and writing a final end for the Borg. We also briefly touch on his work as a creative consultant for Star Trek: Lower Decks & Star Trek: Prodigy, as well as his two credited scripts for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But that's not all! We go into detail about Seven's journey and the allegories she represents, writing the first post-Voyager interaction between Seven & Admiral Janeway, which aspects of the Trek universe he'd like to explore more, the importance of music to his writing process (including talking us through his 'Firewall' playlist) and much more. Trust us, it's a fantastic conversation that you won't want to miss a minute of. David is a good soul who absolutely understands the spirit of Star Trek and has many a geeky or captivating story to tell. So settle down, watch/listen along and hopefully you'll enjoy the chat as much as we did. We are extremely grateful to Mr. Mack for giving us so much of his time and a fantastic interview. Oh, and pick up a copy of 'Firewall', available now!

Welcome back to our continuing look at Romulan-themed Star Trek stories. Last time we kicked things off with "Balance of Terror" so this week, of course we're going to be revisiting those events (with a twist) by diving into the Strange New Worlds season one finale "A Quality of Mercy". The same crew are on deck to compare the stories as hosts Mike & D.K once again welcome the honorary third Musketeer of the podcast Adrienne. As well as the episode review there is some brief Trek talk, a "Hit or Miss section" still searching for anything to get a negative response, and full opinions, conclusions and scores (along with way too much focus on starship and uniform design). So don't be like Captain Pike, accept your fate to kick back and tune into this fun, geeky podcast.

  • Cinema Classics Number 1 - "Play it once, Sam. For old time's sake"

Welcome viewer/listener to the newest spin-off of the Silver Screen Podcast. As time goes by there are more and more films released into the world, and more into the annals of history. Some become renowned for their impact, reputation, artistic merit, overall quality or just how beloved they are. This series is an effort to address those films that the main podcast may otherwise overlook in favour of more modern fare, or movies tied to newer releases. We may look at some of your all-time favourites or films you haven't thought of for a while. We could even be your introduction to, and education on, some films that are an important part of the history of cinema. The rules are simple; any film is eligible provided it had a wide theatrical release anywhere in the world and was released between the birth of cinema and the year 1979. To kick things off we're heading to Rick's to look at a true bona fide gem; 1942's 'Casablanca'. Regular hosts Mike & D.K kick things off without any other guests this week to get the ball rolling. One host has seen this film multiple times and it has a special place in their heart. The other has never seen it all the way through... until now. Find out their opinions as we hear from both angles along with some facts about the film and it's creation, it's cultural impact and it's historical critical response. We conclude, as ever, with our own response and score. Will we find the film worthy of it's classic status? We truly hope you enjoy this episode and join us in celebrating a love of truly great cinema from yesteryear. "Here's lookin' at you, kid"

We're back! Swooping in like a decloaking Bird of Prey to 2024 for a series of podcasts looking at episodes featuring those dastardly, sneaky, Vulcan-lookalkes the Romulans. Regular host Michael returns to the Captain's chair, joined by faithful Number One D.K and our guest, and second officer this week, Adrienne Park-Tucker. They'll be touching base about favourite Romulan things, engaging in the "infamous" Hit or Miss section and then, fittingly, reviewing the first ever appearance of the Romulans in the TOS episode "Balance of Terror". He's joined by regular geek-contributor and this episode's "Peter 2" Tobi. We also welcome a first-time guest, huge comic book geek, and, coincidentally, Mike's nephew, our "Peter 3" Harry Greatrex. They'll be discussing the state of the MCU, unresolved plots, the nature of fan service and whether it's really believable that anybody would walk away from dating Zendaya! So hopefully you'll enjoy this podcast and not leave wishing for Doctor Strange to erase it from your memory as we review 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'.

  • "D.K's Cult Classics Episode 13 - "Ladies and gentlemen, everywhere I look... soldiers are fighting sailors, sailors are fighting Marines! Directly in front of me, I see a flying blond floozy! Everywhere I look... everywhere, pure pandemonium... pandemonium!"

It's nothing but chaos on the show today. DK has been hit on the head and thinks he's a bug so he's enlisted the help of two new recruits: Rob and Adrienne. Unfortunately, Rob has been strapped to a toilet and forced to drink prune juice, while Adrienne is stuck atop a Ferris wheel with a ventriloquist dummy for company. Somehow they have to beat the odds and get together in time to discuss Spielberg's 1979 wartime "comedy" 1941. Boy are they in trouble, now!

  • AN INTERVIEW WITH BILL KRAUSE

NB: We highly recommend you check out this interview on our YouTube channel to see visual examples of Bill's work and the projects discussed.

Hello again, faithful Trek fans. We're here with another special interview with a key figure in the Star Trek world. This time Mike sat down with model maker, video producer, starship enthusiast and Admiral-in-chief of Tycho Ship Yards Bill Krause. There's talk of Bill's intro to Star Trek as a fan, the beginning of modelling as a hobby, his inspirations, being discovered and asked to contribute to the Ships of the Line calendars. Bill also talks about his work on the third season of Star Trek: Picard, primarily adapting his original ship designs into the USS Intrepid and the USS Titan-A (the hero ship that would become the USS Enterprise-G). The chat takes in the weight of being one of the few people to have designed a USS Enterprise, his initial work making gold-plated models for set dressing and his many projects with his company and beyond. Hopefully you enjoy this conversation, starship nerds like our hosts definitely will. If so please like, subscribe, share and check out our links and Bill's just below. "Engage!"

  • "D.K's Cult Classics Episode 12 - "The world needs a wake-up call. We're going to phone it in."

It's the start of a new season here at Cult Classics, and what better way to open it than with a look at another John Carpenter gem? This time it's the turn of the 1988 action thriller/documentary (John's own words) 'They Live'. Join DK and special guests Nick and Jenn as they discuss all things satire, social commentary, creatures and that fight. If you're a fan of the movie you'll be happier than a human lulled to sleep by your alien overlords...

  • Christmas Special 2023 - "You won't be one of those bastards who says "Christmas is once a year and it's a fraud", it's NOT! It can happen every day, you've just got to want that feeling."

Mariah Carey is thoroughly defrosted, Noddy Holder is warming up his voice and we've all lost Whamageddon, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and Silver Screen Podcast is having fun with a festive-themed four round quiz and a full review of the 1988 update of 'A Christmas Carol' that is the movie 'Scrooged'. Mike is Quiz Master and host, joined by co-host D.K and regular contributors/honorary co-hosts Sandy Eavenson and Adrienne Park-Tucker. They'll be discussing Bill Murray's barely contained energy, Richard Donner's outstanding direction, bad Richard Burton impressions, subjective comedy, obscure cameos, freaky effects and the slick, glossy veneer of Christmas in the late 1980s. As always events conclude with the audience's thoughts and the panelists scores out of five Christmas stars. So turn off 'The Night the Reindeer Died', grab a festive beverage and/or snacks and settle in to enjoy this seasonal treat. God bless us, everyone.
