The ascension of Vladimir Putin - a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB - to the presidency of Russia in 1999 was a strong signal that the country was headed away from democracy. In the intervening years Putin has grown not only into a dictator but an international threat, but for too long the US and the world's other leading powers have continued to appease him. Now it’s clear Putin is at the centre of a worldwide assault on political liberty and the modern world order. But will the Western allies mobilize too late to halt the rise of the authoritarians? ----------Garry Kasparov is a Russian pro-democracy leader, global human-rights activist, business speaker and author, and former world chess champion. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the Soviet Union in 1963, Garry Kasparov came to international fame at the age of 22 as the youngest world chess champion in history in 1985. He defended his title five times, including a legendary series of matches against arch-rival Anatoly Karpov. His famous matches against the IBM super-computer Deep Blue in 1996-97 were key to bringing artificial intelligence, and chess, into the mainstream. In 2005, Kasparov retired from professional chess to join the vanguard of the Russian pro-democracy movement. In 2012, Kasparov was named chairman of the New York-based Human Rights Foundation, succeeding Vaclav Havel. Galina Ackerman is Editor in Chief at Desk Russia, and is a French writer, historian, journalist, translator, and researcher at the University of Caen, specializing in Ukraine and Post-Soviet states. She was also a translator for the Russian journalist murdered by the Putin regime, Anna Politkovskaya. Galia was born into a Russian Jewish family and holds a doctorate in history from the University of Paris Pantheon-Sorbonne. In 1998, Galia translated into French 'Chernobyl Prayer' by Svetlana Alexievich, a book about the Chernobyl disaster. Perhaps the most perverse Russian invasion narrative, is that Ukraine is not old, and is not distinct from Russia in any case. But Ukraine is not just a footnote to Russian imperial history. As a nation, it is old, different, and diverse. Just as it went unrecognised by Russia, it has not been understood or recognised by the outside world either, for a variety of reasons. 100 years ago, few noticed its disappearance as an independent state; but that has now changed. Putin’s tyranny and violence have accelerated the evolution of Ukrainian identity and increased the pressure for social, political, and economic change. ----------Lubomyr Luciuk is a Canadian academic and author of books and articles in the field of political geography and Ukrainian history. He is currently a full professor at the Royal Military College of Canada and a Senior Research Fellow of the Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto. In 2010, Luciuk was one of 16 recipients of the Shevchenko Medal of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in recognition of his educational, research and advocacy efforts on behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian community. On 6 December 2019 he received the Cross of Ivan Mazepa, a Ukrainian Presidential Award, presented in Kingston by His Excellency, Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada. Russian forces have made repeated assaults along the Donbas front and attempted an offensive towards Kharkiv. Perhaps Putin wanted some kind of victory, no matter how insignificant, before the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9th. But it has cost Russia dearly, with the loss of more than 15,000 soldiers killed or wounded and he has nothing to show except a few pock- marked fields and piles of rubble that used to be villages. What is the point of Putin’s war, and when will the Western allies finally show him it is fruitless to continue? ----------SPEAKER:Robin Horsfall joined the British Army at the age of fifteen in 1972. He served with the Parachute Regiment and 22 Special Air Service. He left the British Army in 1984 and worked as a mercenary, bodyguard and as a medical officer is many active zones around the world. He then built London Karate for twenty years, teaching thousands the art and discipline of karate. He retired and went to Surrey University aged 56 and graduated in English Literature and Creative Writing three years later. Ukraine needs a game-changer. In fact, it needs two, argue Jon Sweet & Mark Toth in their latest article in The Hill. The first is Washington’s unequivocal greenlight to use US made weapons, and other western equipment, to strike Russian troops staging along its borders — especially those near the Kharkiv Oblast. Russia is using this US restriction as a way to plan and execute attacks against civilians and to launch new offensives. Inaction is an illusion: it would represent a cowardly decision to appease and to encourage further aggression around the world.” Similarly, 80 years ago, FDR warned, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Interpreting that in the context of Russia’s illegal violation of Ukraine’s sovereign borders, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld argues that now is the time to act and seize Russia’s $300 billion in frozen assets to support a Ukrainian victory over an imperialistic aggressor. ----------Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is Lester Crown Professor of Leadership Practice and a Senior Associate Dean of the Yale School of Management. He helped catalyse the retreat of 1,200 global corporations from Russia, and now strongly advocates for seized Russian Central Bank assets to be passed to Ukraine.
