POV: You outearn your partner. Should you be contributing more to things like shared costs, savings and goals because your income is higher? Or is there a more equitable way to split things?
This week on Friday Drinks, Victoria, Bec and Jess discuss the ins and outs of relationship finances, especially when you have different attitudes towards money. From honest communication to the heavy money stories we carry, the gang explores how to build healthier financial behaviours while upholding the values of your partnership.
Oh and we finally learn which of the Powerpuff Girls V, Jess and Bec would be if they could choose. This episode is for you if you ever felt heavy or ashamed for having debt, and want a way to overcome this feeling.
Update: This episode was recorded before the Fuel Excise extension was announced. While the initial discount was higher (E.g. Rather than being taxed 52.6 cents/L we were paying 26.3 c/L in tax), we will now be seeing a 16 cent discount and paying 36.6 c/L in tax; saving around $11 per 65-litre tank.

GP appointments, vitamins, and not to mention the added snack budget; having a baby sounds expensive. So, we asked our very own VD just how much it cost her… with receipts.
This week’s Deep Dive episode unpacks the costs associated with having a baby in modern times. Victoria shares receipts and line items from weeks 4 till 40, with a trimester-by-trimester breakdown of exactly how much she spent, how far the Medicare rebates went and whether private health insurance provided enough coverage throughout.
If you’ve been thinking about family planning or simply wanted to compare notes on out-of-pocket costs, this is the episode for you (or the parent-to-be in your life).

Our diarist this week went from being a flat-broke uni student who could barely afford rent to paying off a $25,000 car loan on a graduate salary in less than a year. She built her emergency fund, started investing, got serious about her money and completely transformed her financial situation.
But now there's a new problem. Every time she spends money, she feels guilty.
We chat about moving away from home at 19, being the only person in her share house paying her own rent, paying off debt, building wealth in regional Australia, dating someone with four investment properties, and the surprising money mindset shift that came after getting her finances under control.
Because sometimes getting good with money isn't the hard part.
Sometimes it's learning how to enjoy it.

Spoiler: Our goal-setting habits are broken. But, it’s not your fault. It’s the psychology we’re raised with.
It’s Deep Dive time! And this financial new year, Victoria and Jess are here to help you get out of your own way, so you can start ticking off those EOFY resolutions nice and early. How? By revisiting the psychology behind setting and sustaining financial goals for the year.
During this episode, the girls share insights about how current approaches to budgeting, investing and general goal-setting might actually be limiting our capabilities, plus ways we might overcome this with practical advice from authors Adam Grant and Angela Duckworth.
This is less about one quick fix for your best year yet, and more about setting goals you’ll actually stick to. Controversial opinion: They don’t fall apart because the journey is hard, they crumble because the journey is boring.
P.S. Please share your goals with us, so we can a) hold you accountable, and b) celebrate you!

This week's Money Diary starts with what should have been a straightforward hospital visit.
Her husband was 32, healthy, active, and recovering from glandular fever when doctors spotted something completely unexpected on a scan. A few months later, they received the news nobody expects to hear: it was cancer. What followed was months of waiting, uncertainty and trying to keep life moving while living in limbo.
But there's another part of this story that really stuck with me. Just over a year earlier, after hearing countless conversations about money, they finally decided to sort out their personal insurances. Not because they thought they'd need them. Just because it felt like the responsible thing to do.
Thank goodness they did.
We talk about the diagnosis that changed everything, navigating a trauma insurance claim in your 30s, what financial security really means when life throws you something completely unexpected, and why this experience changed the way they think about money forever. It's a conversation about planning for the things you hope never happen, and why sometimes the most boring financial decisions end up being the most important ones.

Growing up this week's money diarist remembers boiling water on the stove for baths because the gas had been disconnected, landlords turning up at the front door looking for unpaid rent, and feeling like she never quite fit in because everyone else seemed to have things her family couldn't afford.
Determined to create a different life for herself, she worked hard, saved aggressively, finished university and built what she thought was her dream future with her long-term partner.
Then, two months before their wedding, she received a message request from his ex-girlfriend.
The kind that starts with: "I know you're about to get married, but..."
What happened next changed the entire course of her life.
We talk about calling off a wedding, navigating a breakup during COVID, buying a home on her own at 28, becoming a mum sooner than expected, and the money lessons that finally clicked after discovering the She's on the Money community.
This conversation is about resilience, second chances, and learning that sometimes the life falling apart is actually making room for something much better. By the end of this episode, you'll be very glad she never made it down that aisle.

Say it with me: equal isn’t always equitable.
On Friday Drinks, Jess and Bec cover a very juicy DM concerning inheritances, where one sister has received a lifetime of financial support, while the other is fighting for what she believes is her fair share of the will. Is it considered equal for the more independent child to get a larger share in the end or is there more to it than that?
This episode is also packed with insights for the side hustlers and how they might allocate their earnings. Do you split it into particular percentages (e.g. bills, investments, play) or is it all simply ‘fun money’? Tune in for Broke Tips, Money Wins, how you might split your pizza and the beginnings of Bec’s merch line(!?).

She's 25, owns her home, has paid off her HECS debt, has more than $50,000 in super, is building an investment portfolio and somehow still rated herself a B- when I asked how she felt about her money habits.
Growing up in regional Victoria, she got her first job at 14 and never really slowed down. While most of us were spending our weekends hanging out with friends, she was working supermarket shifts, saving for her future and helping her parents renovate investment properties.
That work ethic followed her everywhere.
Through nursing placements, night shifts, university, a mortgage in her early 20s and a long-distance relationship that somehow survived Melbourne lockdowns.
Now she's built a life that's incredibly solid, but what I loved most about this conversation wasn't the numbers.
It was her mindset.
The way she talks about money feels refreshingly simple. Work hard. Save consistently. Make your money work for you. Repeat.
We chat about buying a home at 21, paying off her HECS debt, starting her investing journey, the money lessons she learnt from her parents and grandparents, and why she's already thinking about the financial life she wants to build long before she starts a family.
Honestly, this episode is proof that wealth isn't always built through big dramatic decisions.
Sometimes it's built one supermarket shift, one mortgage repayment and one very stubborn financial goal at a time.

This week's Money Diary feels a little bit like proof that where you start doesn't have to determine where you end up. She grew up in a tiny village in Eastern Europe in the aftermath of communism, where family holidays weren't a thing, money was scarce, and the future often looked a lot like the past. But even as a kid, she couldn't stop wondering what was on the other side of the horizon.
At 16, she won a scholarship that changed everything. A few years later, she arrived in Australia with just $20 to her name, planning to stay for 12 months before heading back to university in the UK. Instead, she met the man who would become her husband after he quite literally washed up next to her on a beach.
Eighteen years later, they're raising two children on the Gold Coast, have turned a modest beach shack into a property worth around $1.7 million, and she's built a dog-sitting side hustle that's on track to bring in $40,000 this year alongside her part-time career. But what I loved most about this conversation wasn't the property story or even the side hustle.
It was the way she thinks about money.
From collecting bottles to teach her kids about saving, to creating flexibility around family life, to constantly finding creative ways to make money work harder, she's built a life that looks completely different to the one she grew up expecting.

Skincare, makeup, and beauty treatments. When did they first pop up on our spending radar and why?
This week’s Deep Dive gets a little… deep. Bec and Jess discuss the cost of beauty standards: who sets them, sustains them, and how we might look at the whole topic with a raised (and sometimes fluffed) eyebrow.
Because, whether you overtly subscribe to them or not, beauty standards don’t just affect folks who love a trend, they have the tendency to impact our spending habits and perceptions of value, and even our self worth. And it’s not just women either, just consider the whole looksmaxxing thing.
Between the double standards, unrealistic expectations, and self-expression of it all, how have our perceptions around beauty shifted and what are we really buying into? From body hair to full-coverage foundation and the rituals of getting ready, tune in if you’ve ever wondered what we really think about the price of pretty, how we’re feeling about ‘preventative’ measures, and which standards we’re willing to bin at our next earliest convenience.
Should we share what our community actually spends on beauty products? Let us know in the comments.

This week's Money Diary is proof that earning more money doesn't automatically make you feel secure. Growing up, she was constantly worried about money. Not because her family was struggling, but because she'd picked up on snippets of conversations and quietly convinced herself there was never enough.
So she did what a lot of us do. She worked hard. Really hard.
She got her first job at 14, worked multiple jobs through uni, saved obsessively and thought financial security would come from earning more. But after graduating and looking closely at her spending for the first time, she realised something surprising: the problem wasn't how much she earned. It was how little attention she was paying to where it was going.
Fast forward to today and she's investing in ETFs, saving around $2,000 a week, planning to buy her first property, and building wealth with far more confidence than she ever thought possible. This conversation is about scarcity mindset, the stories we inherit about money, and what happens when you finally stop being scared of it.

They’re in the same role as you, have less experience and are somehow being paid more? A whopping $25k more. So, are you being underpaid or simply not asking for what you’re really worth?
On this week’s Friday Drinks, we’re covering career-coded Money Dilemmas. One person asks whether it’s ever worth it to stay in a job you love, even if it means taking longer to reach your money goals.
And someone’s being underpaid! Or are they? With a less-experienced colleague being paid more for the same role, this community member asks whether they’ve missed their moment to ask for a raise – or if they’re simply being underpaid by a whole $25k.
From knowing your worth to knowing your values, this episode is nothing to sniff at.

So you can be overinsured and you can be underinsured, but can you ever just be insured enough in your super?
‘10 Things I Hate About You’ jokes aside, we yapped about insurance with friend of the pod Phil Thompson from Skye Wealth. Join us on the Deep Dive couch as we unpack a couple of case studies to demonstrate what it might look like to be overinsured, plus how an underinsured person might get sufficient cover, followed by a quickfire round of questions from our She’s on the Money community.
Tune in if you’ve ever wondered: what percentage of your income should be spent on insurance, if the coverage in your superannuation is enough to see you through, or if you’ll still be covered with ADHD. Relatable, tbh. Self-employed, unemployed, or in your 40s, Phil’s got an A for so many of your Qs.
