Jennifer Romanello and Olivia Negris, senior medical students at Rush Medical School in Chicago, discussed a recent meeting and paper produced by the Medical Student Forum. This is a group of medical students from the Chicago area medical schools and beyond, who are interested in learning about sexual medicine. We discussed the lack of training in sexual medicine by the medical education system and what they are doing to change this situation.

Today Dr Sara Yunghans will take us through a simulation of taking a sexual history with a standardized patient. This podcast is intended to be a follow up to podcast #38, “Best practices for taking a sexual history”. Dr Yunghans is a pelvic floor physical therapist who is a graduate of the Sexual Health Certificate Program through University of Michigan. She demonstrates that a sexual history can be done quickly during a patient interview.
We will be taking a short break to re-work Sex Ed for Sex Med. We plan to return in March 2024.

Theresa Dible NP discusses how to support new mothers who want to breastfeed but have a low desire for sexual activity. She explains how breastfeeding and other factors can play a role in low desire. Today, we are focusing on cultural competence and sexual health. Those of us with little exposure to cultures and cultural practices outside our own can be quite challenged when talking to those patients. We are talking with Dr. Rachel Pope, from the dept of Urology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She has worked extensively in Southern Africa, helping women with extensive childbirth injuries. She explains how she approaches talking to women with cultural practices like clitoral cutting.

She explains that helping patients be more confident about themselves can involve weight loss. She includes all the steps to make that happen, including the use of weight loss meds. Hot flashes during menopause can cause disrupted sleep, fatigue, and mood issues, which will likely cause sexual dysfunction. Estrogen is the standard of care for such problems, however, for those who can’t or won’t take estrogen, there are non-hormonal meds to help, including a new med, Fezoinetant. We will discuss these meds included in the new position statement on non-hormonal treatment of hot flashes from the Menopause Society.

Today we are discussing vulvar skin disorders with Dr. Kelly Tyler, an associate professor of dermatology at Ohio State University. These disorders have a devastating effect on one’s sexual health. However, what is worse is that they are under-diagnosed and go untreated for years. This is likely due to a lack of awareness of this disorder.
