  • Welcome back, Spooky Squad, to another episode of Scream and Sugar. Today we unravel the sinister story of Dorothea Puente, the "Deathhouse Landlady" - who we like to call Landlady Death - who turned her unassuming boarding house in Sacramento (what up, sister city!) into a house of horrors.
Beneath her kind, grandmotherly exterior, Puente orchestrated a shocking scheme of manipulation, theft, and murder that targeted society's most vulnerable. Her crimes came to light in the 1980s, but the darkness surrounding her story runs much deeper.
Join us as we peel back the layers of this true crime classic. From Dorothea's troubled past and her ability to deceive even the most watchful eyes to the grisly discoveries buried—quite literally—in her backyard, we dive into how she evaded suspicion for so long and the trial that cemented her as one of America's most notorious female serial killers.

Today we are talking about the importance of social work and community relations, as well as referencing a fantastic food spot (Candace's Fave!), Lupita's Mexican Restaurant and Bar.

So grab your coffee (or ceviche?), settle in, and remember to stay spooky, ya'll!

  • Welcome back, Spooky Squad to another episode of Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour. Today we are doing something a little different, a tale on cryptids in the US!
Deep in the pine barrens of New Jersey lurks a creature steeped in mystery and legend: the Jersey Devil. With its bat-like wings, hooved feet, and eerie cries that echo through the trees, this cryptid has terrorized locals for centuries. But where did the legend originate? Was it truly born of a mother’s curse in the 1700s, or is it a tale steeped deep in women's reproductive rights? Join us as we untangle folklore, historical sightings, and the cultural impact of this spine-chilling figure.. We are also covering a tale a little further North, but no less creepy. Maryland’s rolling hills hide a darker secret: the Snallygaster. This part-reptile, part-bird creature with razor-sharp talons and a piercing shriek has haunted eastern regions since colonial times. Rooted in German immigrant folklore, the Snallygaster’s story is one of terror, sightings, and even a potential clash with the US President, Teddy Roosevelt. Could it be a manifestation of fear or a cryptid yet to be discovered? We’ll delve into the fascinating lore and uncover how this monster shaped local history.
So come on and settle down as we sip on coffee from Matador Coffee Roasting Company in Flagstaff, AZ and get into some wickedly fun tales.

  • Welcome back Spooky Squad, to Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour! And welcome back Meredith! Hang with us as we snack on sandwiches from our local My Favorite Muffin, and listen in as Meredith takes us through the blood-chilling tale of survival, Mary Vincent.

In September 1978, 15-year-old Mary was hitchhiking through California when she accepted a ride from Lawrence Singleton. What started as a hopeful journey soon took a sinister turn as Singleton brutally assaulted her, severed both of her arms, and left her for dead in a remote canyon. Astonishingly, Mary fought her way to survival, navigating the rugged landscape until she finally found help.
Singleton’s violence was monstrous, but Mary's survival was nothing short of miraculous. Despite her severe injuries, Mary managed to bring her attacker to justice, later testifying against him and paving the way for the creation of laws aimed at preventing similar injustices. Her story raises profound questions about the criminal justice system, as Singleton received a remarkably light sentence and went on to commit further violent crimes after his release. In sharing Mary’s story, we explore the resilience it takes to rebuild after such a tragedy and the flaws in a system that allowed a predator like Singleton back into society. This case reminds us to advocate for justice reform while honoring Mary’s relentless spirit to move forward and heal.

A co-worker of Basa, Remy Chua, claimed to be possessed by Basa’s spirit, who used Remy's voice to reveal the name of Teresita's killer.

  • Howdy spooky squad, and welcome back to Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour. In today's episode, we are hanging out with proud Texan, Willamina Rose Veneklasen, while she takes us into a chilling case straight out of her hometown of Fort Worth, Texas.

The tragic murders of Andrea Wilburn and Stan Farr, and the attempted murder of Priscilla Davis, were all allegedly committed by millionaire oilman Cullen Davis. On the night of August 2, 1976, the lavish mansion Cullen previously shared with his estranged wife Priscilla became the scene of a bloodbath. Stan Farr, Priscilla’s new boyfriend, was shot dead, and her 12-year-old daughter, Andrea, was brutally killed. Despite being shot herself, Priscilla managed to survive the horrific attack and lived to tell the tale. But the real shocker? Cullen Davis, who was embroiled in a bitter divorce and legal battle with Priscilla, was soon arrested and charged with these heinous crimes. But this case is far from cut and dry. Cullen Davis, a man of wealth and power, managed to dodge conviction in what many believe was the result of his influence and resources. The trial became one of the most sensational in Texas history, filled with twists, including allegations of a hitman hired to kill Priscilla.

  • Welcome back, Spooky Squad, to Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour. In today's episode, we are covering the first part of The UK's most prolific serial killer, Dennis Nilsen.

Few serial killers in British history have left a legacy as chilling as Dennis Nilsen, a man whose calm demeanor hid the unspeakable horrors lurking beneath. Dubbed the ‘Muswell Hill Murderer,’ or the 'Kindly Killer', Nilsen preyed on young men in London during the late 1970s and early 1980s, luring them to his flat where he brutally killed them, often without any apparent motive beyond his own twisted desires. He would then engage in the eerie ritual of bathing and posing their bodies, as if prolonging his control over them even after death.
His capture in 1983, after human remains clogged his drains. Hang with us as we sip on some caffeine from our local Starbucks and dive into this shocking and tragic tale of murder.

  • Welcome back to another episode of Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour. Hang with us today as Candace takes us through the incredible story of the Bluebelle ship.
In November 1961, the Bluebelle, a chartered vacation yacht, set sail from Florida for a holiday voyage, carrying Captain Julian Harvey, his wife Mary Dene, and the Duperrault family who hired him. Tragedy struck when the vessel mysteriously sank in the middle of the Caribbean. Julian Harvey was found days later, claiming that a sudden storm had destroyed the yacht and drowned everyone else. However, suspicion grew as his version of events seemed inconsistent with the conditions reported at sea.
The real twist came when 11-year-old Terry Jo Duperrault, thought to be among the victims, was discovered floating alone on a cork raft after four days adrift. Terry Jo's survival story contradicted Harvey’s claims, revealing a chilling truth. Terry Jo’s miraculous survival unraveled one of the most shocking crimes at sea, leaving the world stunned by the lengths Harvey went to conceal his crimes.

  • Welcome back to another episode of Scream and Sugar: Your True Crime Coffee Hour. Today, we're diving into a case that shook the small town of Arlington, Texas, and eventually, the country.
In January 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was riding her bike near her grandparents' home when a man in a black pickup truck suddenly and horrifically abducted her. Despite a witness immediately reporting the crime, Amber’s kidnapper vanished along the town streets, and the search for her ended in heartbreak four days later when her body was found in a nearby creek. Amber's tragic murder remains unsolved to this day, leaving a haunting void in the hearts of those who loved her.
Out of this tragedy came a powerful legacy. Amber's story led to the creation of the AMBER Alert system, a tool that has since become vital in the fight against child abduction. Launched in 1997, just a year after her death, the system broadcasts urgent alerts to the public, harnessing the power of the community to aid in the swift recovery of missing children. The AMBER Alert has saved hundreds of lives, a testament to how one little girl’s story continues to make a difference long after she’s gone. Join us as we sip our coffee from Maple Moon Coffee Company and let’s remember Amber and the many children who have been brought home safely because of the system born from her tragedy. And remember, to stay spooky, ya'll!

This case remains open and unsolved! Any tips can be sent to the hotline at 817-575-8823.
Call Crime Stoppers of Tarrant County at 817-469-TIPS (8477) for those who wish to remain anonymous.

  • Welcome back everyone to another episode of Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour! Today's episode highlights the importance of societal divisions.
In a town known more for its cattle than its culture, Amarillo, Texas, became the unlikely stage for a brutal clash of identities on a cold December night in 1997. Brian Deneke, a 19-year-old with a mohawk, was brutally run down by a car driven by Dustin Camp, a high school jock. What started as a petty rivalry between the punks and preps of Amarillo escalated into a deadly encounter that cost Brian his life. This wasn't just a senseless act of violence; it was a murder that laid bare the deep-seated prejudices simmering beneath the surface of a small town.
But the tragedy didn't end with Brian's death. The trial that followed would expose the disturbing ways in which societal biases infiltrated the courtroom.
The verdict and its aftermath would send shockwaves through Amarillo and beyond, prompting questions about justice, identity, and the dangerous consequences of societal divisions. As we sip our coffee and delve into this dark chapter, we explore not only the events that led to Brian's untimely death but also the lingering impact his story has had on the fight for justice and acceptance.

  • Welcome back to another episode of Scream and Sugar, your true crime coffee hour! Today, special guest Ian Leipold, also known as Ingus Anthony Newman, merch guy from local band Felipendejo takes us through an infamous day in Reno history. We are diving into the chilling case of Priscilla Ford, a woman whose name still sends shivers down the spines of Reno, Nevada residents. On Thanksgiving Day in 1980, Ford turned a holiday of gratitude into a day of terror when she drove her Lincoln Continental down a crowded sidewalk on Virginia Street, killing six (seven?) people and injuring 23 others. What could drive someone to commit such a heinous act? Ford's erratic behavior and bizarre statements during her trial suggested an unhinged mind, leading to questions about her mental stability leading up to the crime.

As we sip on sweet milkshakes from local shop Scoopers and reflect on this case, it's impossible not to wonder about the deeper forces in Ford's life. Was she a cold-blooded killer, or a woman overwhelmed by her inner demons? The investigation revealed a complex web of mental illness, a troubled past, and a history of failed relationships that may have pushed her to the brink. Yet, the cold reality remains—six innocent lives were lost in a senseless act of violence. In the aftermath, the city of Reno was left to grapple with the horror of Thanksgiving Day in 1980, a day that forever changed the lives of so many.

Thank you to Ian for taking us through this case, and Scoopers for the tasty milkshakes! Thanks for listening, and we will see you in the next one. Stay spooky, ya'll!

  • In this deeply sobering episode of Scream and Sugar: Your True Crime Coffee Hour, we journey into the heart of one of the most chilling tragedies in modern history—the Jonestown Massacre. Under the charismatic and manipulative leadership of Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple promised a utopian society where equality and social justice reigned supreme. Drawn by this vision, thousands of followers followed Jones throughout America before seeking refuge in the remote jungles of Guyana to establish what they believed would be a sanctuary free from persecution and hardship.
However, the dream quickly soured. Isolated from the outside world, the residents of Jonestown found themselves under Jones’s increasingly authoritarian control. As reports of abuse and coercion emerged, concern grew among those who had loved ones in the commune. From the hopeful beginnings of the Peoples Temple to the ultimate tragedy in Guyana, we’ll explore how a dream of paradise became a nightmare.
In Pt III, Candace takes us through what happens in Guyana, with the ultimate payment by the church members at the end.

  • Welcome back to "Scream and Sugar," your true crime coffee hour, where we dive into the dark side of humanity while enjoying something sweet on the side. Today, we're delving into the chilling case of Austin Harrouff, the Florida State University student whose brutal attack in 2016 left the nation in shock. One night, in a seemingly inexplicable fit of rage, Harrouff assaulted and killed a couple, John Stevens and Michelle Mishcon, in their home. The scene was gruesome, with Harrouff found by police biting the face of one of his victims. This shocking detail led to rampant speculation about his mental state and potential drug influence, particularly given his bizarre behavior and claims of hearing "demonic" voices.

The case took a complex turn as Harrouff's defense argued that he was in a psychotic state during the attack, while the prosecution pushed for accountability and justice for the victims. Medical examinations later revealed no traces of common street drugs, deepening the mystery. The court faced the daunting challenge of distinguishing between genuine mental illness and sheer brutality. Join us as we unravel the details of this harrowing incident and explore the perplexing psychology behind Austin Harrouff's actions, examining the fine line between madness and malice. We'll see you in the next one. Stay Spooky, babies!
