This is not only the cycle of the Moon, but the cycle of the Moon-Sun relationship.
The Moon as the mediatrix between the Sun and the earth allows the rhythmic elaboration of life with its changes, as a reflection of the relationship. In ancient times were no months of the year, there was a tracking of the moons on the solar year. They refer to events or activities that took place at precise moments.
The lunar phases fascinate us, humans, since we are aware that they are there, and we gave them the name as him and her.
