  • Samantha’s friend and former colleague, Joanna Hardis, LISW-S, joins the pod to talk about her new book “Just Do Nothing: A Paradoxical Guide to Getting Out of Your Way”. Joanna is a local cognitive behavioral therapist who treats adults with anxiety disorders and OCD spectrum disorder. As you will hear, her book came from her own personal situation, when she had to apply the skills she teaches others to herself and her life. As relates to mid-life dating and relationships (and just life in general), she shares tips and tools in her book and in her (free!) mini-course for identifying what makes you anxious and the resulting reactions and behaviors that have become your automatic response through the years which may not be serving you well. She shares that you can train yourself to “do nothing” when chaotic feelings and thoughts start coming up so that you can better engage in experiences and situations that you might normally avoid or try to control.

  • Today we welcome the exExperts, T.H. Irwin and Jessica Herzberg to Rust Belt Love. They are long time BFFs who got divorced at the same time and were lucky to have each other through the process. So, to pay it forward, they organized their divorce experiences and advice into a website chock full of information and resources, an online support network, a coaching program, a weekly newsletter, a web series and a podcast that helps folks who are thinking about getting divorced, are in the middle of divorcing and for those on the other side of divorce. And they are fun to spend an hour with and very honest about what they’ve been through and where their lives are now. Find exExperts on social media—links below:

  • Cathy and her childhood neighbor and BFF, Kirsten, reconnected a few years ago on Facebook after having lost touch for 30 (ish) years. The first thing Cathy noticed was that Kirsten was recently married and the man she married was the young man Cathy vividly remembered Kirsten being crazy for in high school. Kirsten shares her story of finding her way back to her first love, both having been through a few marriages and some hard times. She talks about what is different in their relationship now and how it's working out, eleven years in.

  • Caroline from Season 1 Episode 17 is back for a repeat engagement with RBL. She and Samantha are both on the dating apps this summer and we talk about how it’s going and what we're afraid of. We also focus on The Burned Haystack Dating Method ™ (BHDM) and the varying degrees to which they are employing the method. BHDM is a method for women (who date men and are looking for a relationship on the dating apps), that claims to result in better quality(and likely far fewer) dates. BHDM founder Jennie Young, PhD, is not a dating coach or dating consultant, she is a writer and a professor of English and explores rhetoric, language and metaphor analysis and how it applies to dating in these times and happily shares it with anyone who is interested through her social media platforms.

  • The episode in which we talk about sex with two guys we just met. Our guests Lance and Matt are the hosts of “Seniors 94” a podcast about “middle aged men and their feelings”. Lance is married to his high school sweetheart and Matt is separated from his wife and sorting all that out. It was a fun conversation for us (warning! not our usual PG content) and after sharing our individualstories, we got into post-marriage sex & intimacy, and communicating with new partners about STDs and preferences. “Seniors 94” also featured a versionof our conversation on their recent podcast episode, so be sure to check them out on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

  • Our guest, Dan, has learned that making marriage and lovelast is an “act of will”. Dan met his wife 20 years ago on e-Harmony when they were both 58 and divorced. He fell in love with her and her artwork (and her artwork, incidentally, is how Samantha met Dan and convinced him to join us on RBL). Despite him living in Alabama and she in Michigan, they worked it out and are still working it out today. Dan shares that, at 78, he’s grateful for the opportunity to reflect on his past relationships and is learning to understand how his expectations of marriageand partnership perhaps did not serve him, his partners, or his relationships, well in the past. At this point in his life and his marriage he’s learned that a happy marriage doesn’t mean that you both have to be happy all the time and have identical thoughts and interests.
