In this episode we discuss the challenges and rewards of parenting during medical training with special guests Dr. Yaa Asare, Dr. Kira Grush, & Dr. Kyle McDaniel.
Yaa Asare is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician(2024) who trained at the University of Colorado. She is currently a fellow in the University of Colorado Hospice and Palliative Medicine Program. Her professional goals are to practice both primary care and Palliative Medicine. She is a native of Ghana, though has lived in the Denver area for 20 years. She enjoys exploring spicy cuisines and taking long walks with her husband, daughter, and dog.
Kira Grush, MD, MA (she/her/hers) is a Chief Medical Resident at the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program. She is originally from Boulder, Colorado and remains a “forever Coloradan,” having received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Colorado College and her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and MD from the University of Colorado. She comes to medicine after a career in K-12 education where she served as a middle school English teacher and, later, Dean of Students in the Cole neighborhood of Denver. She plans to pursue fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine with the long-term goal of developing curriculum around critical care and health equity. Outside of work, Kira spends her time with her husband, Kyle, who is a hospitalist at the University of Colorado Hospital, and their 16-month-old son, Nolan, who has quickly become their whole world. Together, they enjoy playing board games, traveling, watching the Rockies (lose), and spending time outside.
Kyle McDaniel, MD, is a hospitalist and instructor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus, where he earned his MD and did internal medicine residency.

Dr. Katie Berlacher, MD MS is the Associate Chief of Education and Director of the Women's Heart Program for the Heart and Vascular Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, as well as the Program Director of Cardiovascular Fellowship and Chair of Medicine at the UPMC Magee Womens Hospital. She is the current Chair of ACC's Annual Scientific Sessions, member of the Health Equity Task Force, past chair of ACC's Lifelong Learning Oversight Committee and past president of the Pennsylvania ACC Chapter. She leads numerous faculty development efforts and regularly publishes and speaks about adult learning and medical education, as well as women's cardiology, cardio-obstetrics and health equity. Dr. Berlacher is a graduate of Duke University and The Ohio State University College of Medicine. She completed her Residency, Chief Residency, and Fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She also holds a Masters Degree in Medical Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Jenna Skowronski, MD is an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is obtaining her Masters of Science in Medical Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She plans to pursue a career that allows her to combine her passion for Advanced Heart Failure, Women's Cardiology, and medical education. She serves as a committee member on ACC's Heart Failure and Transplant Council as well as on the program committee for Heart Failure for ACC's Scientific Sessions. She is also a committee member on AHA's CLCD for Women's Health and Acute Cardiac Care and General Cardiology Committees. Dr. Skowronski is a graduate of Princeton University and Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. She completed her Residency, Chief Residency and Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she also served as Chief Fellow.

In this episode we discuss the struggles of medical training in the post-Roe era w/ rural family medicine physician and clinical educator Dr. Julie Lyons. Dr. Lyons earned her BA from Brown, her MD from Oregon Health & Science University, and trained in Family Medicine in Boise, Idaho. Since 2009, she has worked at St. Luke's Wood River Family Medicine in Hailey, Idaho, and also serves as a clinical preceptor for the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Our guest on this episode is Dr. Geoff Connors, MD. Dr. Connors is the Associate Dean for GME and Designated Institutional Official at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He was previously the Program Director for the University of Colorado Internal Medicine Residency Program and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Medicine where he helped bring about several systematic changes to the structure of the residency to improve resident wellbeing.
Dr. Geoffrey Connors is an Associate Professor of Medicineat the University of Colorado in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine. He also serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/ACGME Designated Institutional Official at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Colorado, Dr. Connors was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale University where he served as an Associate Program Director in the Residency Training Program and the Director of Clinical Reasoning for the Medical School.
Dr. Connors received his medical degree from TulaneUniversity, did his residency and Chief Medical Residency at the University of Colorado, and then completed a fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine at Johns Hopkins. University School of Medicine He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. His leadership style is rooted in a coaching model with a focus on achieving success by granting agency and structured autonomy to trainees and junior faculty.

Today we introduce a new series in which co-hosts Elizabeth Konon & Nikolai Harroun interview trainees at pivotal transitions in their training.
Today's guest is Dr. Andrew Pham - a PGY3 in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado. Andrew Pham is a native Coloradoan and a son to Vietnamese refugee immigrants. He has completed all of his training in state with undergraduate degrees from the University of Denver and medical school at the University of Colorado. Dr. Pham was recently selected to become a Chief medical resident starting July 2024. In this episode, we discuss his views on the role of the chief medical resident and what he hopes to bring to that position.

Shanta M. Zimmer, MD is the Senior Associate Dean for Education and Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM). An infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Zimmer completed her medical school, residency, and fellowship training at Emory University in Atlanta. She left Emory to join the faculty at theUniversity of Pittsburgh in 2008 initially as director of the translational research track in the Master’s in Clinical Science training program and then as the internal medicine residency program director.
Dr. Zimmer joined CU School of Medicine in June 2016 as the associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, a role she held until fall 2022. In 2017, Dr. Zimmer stepped into the role of Senior Associate Dean for Education and in this capacity she directs the office of medical education and oversees the educational initiatives of the School of Medicine including undergraduate, graduate and continuing medical education. After a successful site visit by the LCME in spring 2017, Dr. Zimmer and her team launched a curriculum revision process and implemented the innovative Trek Curriculum in fall 2021. The new curriculum includes a focus onleadership, curiosity and commitment with special attention to outcomes based education and incorporation of health systems science through the lens of equity and community engagement.

Dr. Nicole Rueb is a PGY-2 Internal Medicine Resident at the University of Colorado. She graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans in 2022 and completed her undergraduate degree in Statistics at Southern Methodist University in 2018. She is applying for a GI fellowship this upcoming cycle and has a particular interest in rural medicine. She loves to ski moguls, hike 14ners, and play tennis. After work, Nicole can be found walking around one of Denver's many parks with her pug Coco.
Dr. Suzanne Brandenburg grew up in Buffalo, New York. She followed her family to Colorado after college where she worked for two years as an aerospace engineer. Then she completed medical school and residency training at the University of Colorado (CU). She became a faculty member right out of residency and has been a clinician educator at the University of Colorado for her entire career. She is currently leading the new CU School of Medicine at Colorado State University's 4-year branch campus as Associate Dean for Education. She oversees interprofessional education on the Anschutz Medical Campus as Director of the CU Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. She previously served as Director of the University of Colorado’s Internal Medicine Residency Program and as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. She enjoys teaching, mentoring and building programs. She is committed to connecting with today’s socially and environmentally conscious learners, and developing opportunities for them to engage and explore their potential to work together to address the social determinants of health and the broader threats our planet faces. She feels privileged to care for patients as a general internist. Outside of medicine, she spends much of her time with family– her husband of over 30 years, her son and daughter-in-law, and of course her granddaughter! She enjoys cooking, eating, reading fiction, hiking and traveling.
Dr. Kelly White is an associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado where she practices primary care with joy and dedication. She also loves teaching and has been educating residents and medical students for over 20 years. She is currently the director of the resident clinic at Anschutz internal medicine and is also a DOCs coach teaching clinical skills to first year medical students. Her passion in medical education is teaching in the clinical space through a culture of safety and vulnerability. When she is not in the clinic or teaching, she loves spending time outdoors with family, friends, and her slightly misunderstood dog, Murray.

Dr. Caitlin Dietsche is an assistant professor and hospitalist at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is the Director of the medical education pathway for the internal medicine residency program and the Director of the medicine housestaff teams at the University hospital. In this episode, we discuss the complex but critical field of competency assessment in medical education with Dr. Olle Ten Cate. Dr. ten Cate is an emeritus professor of medical education at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands and an adjunct professor of medicine at UCSF with a background of undergraduate medical training and a PhD in social sciences. He has four decades of experience at the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht with curriculum innovation, educational research, and faculty development in the health professions domain. One of his interests is competency based education in the health professions and specifically in the application of entrustable professional activities and entrustment decision making.

In Today's Episode, we talk with Dr. Vineet Chopra about leadership, mentorship, and career development within academic medicine.
Dr. Vineet Chopra is a Professor of Medicine, holder of the Robert W. Schrier Endowed Chair, and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado (CU). Prior to coming to CU in 2021, Dr. Chopra served as the inaugural Chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of Michigan from 2017-2021.
A career hospitalist, Chopra’s research and clinical interests are dedicated to improving the safety of hospitalized patients by preventing hospital-acquired conditions. His work focuses on identifying and preventing complications associated with centralvenous catheters, with a particular emphasis on peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC). He is first author of the Michigan Appropriateness Guide for Intravenous Catheters (MAGIC), criteria that establish the appropriateness of IV device use and are in use in thousands of hospitals across the US and the world.

In today's episode we talk to Dr. Laura Vater about her journey in medicine and how she came to be passionate about promoting humanism in medicine and becoming an advocate for physician well-being.
Laura Vater, MD, MPH, is a medical oncologist, writer, and advocate for clinician health. She has published a number of narrative medicine essays, is a member of the Pegasus Physician Writers at Stanford University, and recently completed her first novel. In 2017, she developed a tool to help patients and clinicians prioritize their health (The SMILE ScaleTM).
Dr. Vater earned her Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Oncology at Indiana University. She was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2018 and is a member of the IU School of Medicine Honor Roll.

Dr. Ngozi Anachebe is the Vice Dean of Educational Affairs at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. She is a cum laude graduate of the Mercer University College of Pharmacy, where she received her Pharm.D, and a graduate of the Morehouse School of Medicine where she received her M.D. degree. She did her internship and residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Morehouse School of Medicine/Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, serving as chief resident. After completing her residency, she joined Morehouse as faculty, serving over the years as OB/GYN clerkship director and in Assistant/Associate Dean roles in both Admissions/Student Affairs and Undergraduate Medical Education.
Dr. Anachebe’s scholarly interests include predicting outcomes in medical school, mentoring students who are underrepresented in medicine, and health disparities in reproductive outcomes. She is currently co-investigator on a Health Research Services Administration Health Careers Opportunity Program grant. She is the recipient of multiple student awards during her career at Morehouse, including Outstanding Advisor of the Year and Outstanding OB/GYN Faculty Member. She is a recipient of the Morehouse Distinguished Alumnus Award, and is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. She is a 2020 graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program.

Dr. Carmody went to medical school at the University of Virginia, residency training at The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, and then returned to UVA for a fellowship in pediatric nephrology. He now works at CHKD and teaches at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Released in honor of National Physician Suicide Awareness day - a topic that is exceedingly important to bring attention to. We hope this episode helps de-stigmatize mental health struggles and suicidal ideation in medicine and medical training.
We were fortunate to chat with Dr. Chase Anderson about his personal struggles with mental health and how we can be better advocates for our colleagues to mitigate physician suicide. The power of vulnerability is strong!
Dr. Chase T. M. Anderson (but just call him Chase!) is currently a child and adolescent psychiatrist at University of California at San Francisco and graduated from adult psychiatry residency at The Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at UCSF. He completed his undergraduate education in Chemistry at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his master's in Biological Engineering at MIT as well, and is a graduate of The Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine.
His writing has appeared in WBUR/NPR, Scientific American, WonderMind, STAT News, The New England Journal of Medicine, and other news and journal outlets.
