  • Assuring words for you today when life has you in its hold. Philippians 4 is our focus as we start the week and a new theme: Encouragement.

Key Passage: "Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:4-7).

  • “Joseph was thirty years old when he entered the service of Pharaoh king of Egypt” (Genesis 41:46 NIV).

This one line in Scripture describes a pinnacle for an extraordinarily courageous man of God. Let’s venture back more than a decade when Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery. He was betrayed and deserted by his own family. What a lonely, frightening and hopeless situation.

Yet, God had big plans for this young man, even when bound by the constraints of captivity. We can learn a lot from Joseph when it comes to compromising our relationship with God. We'll do that in today's audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Genesis 39:1-10

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh’s officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned. From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the Lord blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph.

The blessing of the Lord was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field. So Potiphar left everything he had in Joseph’s care; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate.
Now Joseph was well-built and handsome, and after a while his master’s wife took notice of Joseph and said, “Come to bed with me!”

But he refused. “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care. No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

  • I blew it big-time. And it took me two days to see God’s purposes in it. Let me set the table for you . . . literally. My wife and I were having a pleasant lunch with friends we hadn’t seen in years. Great conversation, delicious Mexican food, excellent service. Did I mention excellent service? More than excellent is what our waiter must have thought after we left.

I gallantly took the check (with an elbow from my wife) and treated our six guests. In the parking lot afterwards, everyone was all smiles as we wished each other “Sayonara!” The shock came several days later. Listen today and I'll share the rest of the story in our audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Romans 8:29-34

For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

  • COURAGE... our theme this week as we start the Retreating with God podcast. We can learn a lot from Daniel:

Daniel had a target on his back. He was challenged by a group of jealous cohorts for worshiping the God of Israel. These cunning colleagues wanted to trap Daniel, so they had a new law created stating that only the king could be worshiped.

Daniel courageously worshiped God no matter what the cost, boldly pushing back against the world. It nearly cost him his life. Let's explore more in today's audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Daniel 6:10-23

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”

The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”

Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.

Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”

So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.

At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”

The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.

  • Something remarkable happened just before Jesus breathed his last breath saying these words, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46 ESV).

The passage tells us that the curtain of the temple was torn in two. One simple sentence, yet it was a dividing line in human history. Let's discover what it means to us today in our audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

Psalm 139:1-12 (NIV)—a wonderful passage about God’s presence with us.

    You have searched me, Lord,

    and you know me.

    You know when I sit and when I rise;

you perceive my thoughts from afar.

    You discern my going out and my lying down;

you are familiar with all my ways.

Before a word is on my tongue

    you, Lord, know it completely.

You hem me in behind and before,

and you lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,

too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

    If I go up to the heavens, you are there;

if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn,

if I settle on the far side of the sea,

even there your hand will guide me,

your right hand will hold me fast.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me

and the light become night around me,”

    even the darkness will not be dark to you;

the night will shine like the day,

for darkness is as light to you.

  • The Word of God is nourishment for our soul. God’s Holy Spirit takes this book and miraculously gives us his insights, his strength and his life. It’s not just literature, but as we studied recently on Retreating with God, “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 ESV)

Something special happens when we internalize God’s Word. Let's discover that in our time together today.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    2 Timothy 3:14-17 (NIV)

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  • I praise God that we have his written Word. To have access to the very mind of God is quite remarkable. He is the Lord of the universe and yet he chooses to speak to mankind. We call the Bible his Holy Word, and we should treat it that way.

What would it look like if you hid from the world for a day, or a weekend, and spent the time with God? My daughter-in-law did that. She called it a spiritual retreat. It came after a stressful, demanding several-month season.

Imagine having your Bible with you, a notebook, pen and nothing else. The purpose is to rest with God. No agenda. No lofty goals. No activity. No people! Most of all, no devices! Ahhhh, you can probably feel the refreshment already. More on that in today's audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Jeremiah 17:7-8 NIV

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,

    whose confidence is in him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water

that sends out its roots by the stream.

    It does not fear when heat comes;

    its leaves are always green.

It has no worries in a year of drought

and never fails to bear fruit.”

  • Life happens and our joy is sucked right out of us. We’re blindsided by getting fired, losing a good friend, receiving a call from our child’s principal’s office, or . . . you fill in the blank.

You might be in that place right now. I hope today's audio devotional can lift you up.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Hebrews 4:12-16 (NIV)

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

  • The resurrection is the most joyful event in history.

Think about the contrast felt by Jesus’ followers. He was crucified on Friday. The hopes that they had for their king to rule were dashed. They were banking on an earthly rule and being rescued from the oppression of Rome. Now their king was dead. Their expectations died with him.

The disciples scattered. Their faith vanished in a day. They didn’t want to be caught as one of Jesus’ followers. Three years of their lives were wasted following a dream. The foolish eleven shamefully faced going back to their jobs.

Then came Easter. Let's enter the scene together in today's audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Matthew 28:1-10, 16-20 (NIV)

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Then, we go to The Great Commission

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  • The journey in the here and now is full of trials and hardships. We can choose to let the hardships capture our senses. Or we can let our minds flash forward to the eternal victory we will experience – thanks to Jesus. Today, we'll dwell on Scriptural truths that will turn your heart from doubt and discouragement to joy.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Revelation 19:1-9 (NIV)

After this I heard what sounded like the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting:

    “Hallelujah!

Salvation and glory and power belong to our God,

for true and just are his judgments.

He has condemned the great prostitute

who corrupted the earth by her adulteries.

He has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”

    And again they shouted:

    “Hallelujah!

The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever.”

The twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, who was seated on the throne. And they cried:

    “Amen, Hallelujah!”

Then a voice came from the throne, saying:

    “Praise our God,

    all you his servants,

    you who fear him,

    both great and small!”

Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting:

    “Hallelujah!

For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

Let us rejoice and be glad

    and give him glory!

For the wedding of the Lamb has come,

and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean,

    was given her to wear.”

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

  • John 15:1-8 holds the secret to living the Christian life. It’s a simple concept that I return to often. These verses are a great reminder of how Jesus intended for us to relate to him.

The passage starts out, “I am the true vine” (John 15:1 ESV). I find these words assuring. Jesus’ statement sets the scene. He shows me the source of life. He’s not just any vine. He’s the true vine.

Today, we'll see what other gems are in this passage.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    John 15:1-8 (NIV)

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  • We are challenged to compromise our walk with God every day. That’s what spiritual warfare is all about.

It’s not the major compromises that do us in. We can usually resist the urge to steal, kill or hurl insults.

But how about the subtle compromises? We share a prayer request about someone but it’s really gossip; bend the truth but refuse to call it a lie; and justify our anger towards a family member to avoid apologizing.

Jesus dealt with the heart when it came to transgressions. He didn’t let people off the hook. Today, we'll look at what he said.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    John 14:1-7

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.

  • Rocks are mentioned throughout the Bible, often symbolizing strength, protection and stability. David expressed it this way, “. . .  my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield” (2 Samuel 22:3 ESV). He says later in that chapter, “The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation” (verse 47).

Jesus is here for you in this world. Are you facing fears, anxiety, uncertainty, instability, the unknown? My friend, your rock is Jesus and he is your shield. He is your stronghold. He is your rescuer. Today's audio devotional is a confidence-builder!

    KEY PASSAGES:

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:2 ESV).

“You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation” (Psalm 89:26 ESV.

“Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!” (Psalm 31:2 ESV).

  • Most of us don’t have to go far from our home to see the poor. We’re confronted with poverty at freeway offramps, street corners and sidewalks. Something inside says we should care. At the same time, we’re uncomfortable, so we don’t do anything. Day after day, we face this tension.

The poor are more than those we see locally on the street corners. Sections of entire cities are home to the impoverished.

If we think globally, then our minds picture dirt roads, makeshift homes, undernourished children and villages that have so little.

The Bible commands us to help the poor and needy. Especially the orphans and widows. Today, we'll see how we can be prayer warriors these people, and how it will change our lives.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    I John 3:16-18 (NIV)

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

  • God tells us to “be holy, because I am holy” (I Peter 1:16 NIV). What a tall order. Sure, we want to be holy, but it seems totally out of reach.

The Bible promises this: “For those he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29 ESV). Do you realize the significance of this promise? You know Jesus as your Savior, right? You will be like Jesus, who was 100% holy. It’s your destiny.

But getting from here to there is the issue. Today, in our audi9o devotional, we will see how prayer plays a key role.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Romans 8:28-32 (NIV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who i have been called according to his purpose.

  • If we know it’s futile, why do we keep worrying? I have a hunch, but I’ll get to that in a minute.

It’s been a problem since the fall of man. It was important enough for Jesus to address it in his day:

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes” (Luke 12:22-23 NIV).

I’d say that’s straightforward. Jesus addresses our short sightedness. He sees the big picture, beyond our daily needs. That’s a hint for how to deal with worry.

We'll dig into it more today.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Luke 12:22-26, 29-31 (NIV)

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

  • Who was the biggest failure in the New Testament? A person that comes to mind is Peter. This man was an enthusiastic follower of Jesus. He pretty much stated he’d go to the ends of the earth for his Lord.

However, he failed Jesus in his hour of greatest need. As the Savior was going through the suffering leading up to the crucifixion, Peter was asked three times if he was an ally of Jesus. Each time, he denied even knowing him. Peter was a terrible friend that night. He failed Jesus.

How do you feel when you fail Jesus? Depending on how severe the offense, you probably experience a range of emotions.

Today, we'll explore how to climb out of the hole.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Galatians 2:20-21 (NIV)

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!

  • A lot has been said about faith and works over the centuries as they relate to the Christian life.  We know that we are saved through faith –

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —  and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)

Yet, works do have a part in our relationship with God –

“So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17 ESV)

Let's explore this further in our audio devotional.

    KEY PASSAGE:

    Matthew 5:13-16 (NIV)

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

  • I’ve never heard the phrase “courageous parenting,” but it’s certainly a quality moms and dads need for their overwhelming roles. Looking through Scripture, even kings had varied results raising their kids. Today, we'll look at three, followed by three parenting principles and one key verse.

    KEY VERSE:

    Colossians 3:21

Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. (NIV)

Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. (ESV)
