S5 E5 Understanding PANDAS with Dr. Sarah O'Dor
In this episode, we discuss a rare pediatric condition known as PANDAS - Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. PANDAS is a phenomenon when a child has a spontaneous manifestation of psychiatric issues following a strep infection. The field has only recently started to research and understand this condition over the past few decades. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a core feature of PANDAS, among others such as vocal or motor tics, that comes on suddenly and has a strong impact on the child’s life.
Dr. Sarah O’Dor is an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and the Director of Research at the Pediatric Neuropsychiatry and Immunology Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, otherwise known as the “PANDAS Clinic.” Dr. O’Dor’s research seeks to identify the underlying biological causes, treatments, and mediating factors for recovery in childhood mental disorders. For the past 7 years, her work has focused on pediatric neuropsychiatric disorders, including Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), mood disorders, and PANDAS. Her findings have resulted in several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters about childhood mental disorders. Dr. O’Dor contributions to the field of psychology and psychiatry have been recognized by organizations such as the American Psychological Foundation, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, and the International OCD Foundation. Dr. O’Dor is also a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and has a private practice in the Boston suburbs specializing in psychological and neuropsychological assessments for children through young adults.

S4 E5: “Parenting Children with ADHD through Connection.”
Raising children is a role that requires so much - understanding, flexibility, planfulness, love, consistency, responsiveness, care, and so much more. We believe it is one of the most admirable roles that we can take on, the pursuit of raising happy and healthy children (whether a parent, caregiver, educator, coach, mentor, family member). In this episode, we share a nuanced discussion about how to support children with attentional and related differences, such as ADHD.
Recognizing and understanding the challenges that are present is the first step, whether it’s attentional challenges or executive functioning vulnerabilities. However, in this episode we talk about how connection is a key component when raising and interacting with children who have neurodiverse profiles. We provide examples of ways in which connection can be built into the strategies and interventions that parents can utilize when guiding, responding to, and supporting their child with ADHD.

Bullying is a term that has become commonly used as a part of conversations among young people and their peers both in real life and online. In the past few decades there has been an uptick in recognizing, researching, and naming bullying in public and private sectors while striving to support those who have been impacted by the aggressive behaviors related to bullying and peer victimization. This is especially prevalent in schools as the CDC currently reports that 1 in 5 teenagers report being bullied in school and 1 in 6 teenagers report being bullied online. That percentage increases when we discuss students who are a minority in their community. Most schools will report that they have some kind of anti-bullying precedent or curriculum, but repeated perpetrations and the damage caused by such behaviors still remains.
Episode 3 of Season 4 provides a very nuanced and detailed discussion about the topic of childhood bullying. In this episode, Jerry and I are joined by Boston University professors and bullying prevention experts, Melissa Holt, Ph.D and Jennifer Greif Green, Ph.D. Topics discussed include clarifying what bullying is and is not, what contributes to kids bullying their peers, how bullying could affect an individual, and how we can help children who are involved in bullying either as a perpetrator or a target. Drs. Holt and Green were Jerry’s mentors during his time at BU during his doctoral training and this episode is a testament to their work together as it comes full circle in the discussion of bullying research.

Season 4 is all about connection - connection with others, connection with something outside of yourself, and connection with yourself. To start off the new season, Jerry and Alexis were thrilled to have critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, Hayley Reardon, join us in studio to talk about her connection with song - writing songs, producing original music, and sharing her songs in performances. Hayley takes us on her musical journey, starting at a young age growing up in a north shore coastal town of Massachusetts. We discuss the experiences that inspire songs, the creative process that Hayley goes through when developing a song, and what it’s like to share her creations with others on stage and with the world.
Raised in a coastal Massachusetts town north of Boston, Hayley Reardon is a critically acclaimed folk-pop singer and songwriter. She is a storyteller in the truest sense of the word. Her songs serve as postcards from an artist brave enough to take the road less traveled. Reardon dove head first into music at the young age of 15, and has spent much of the past decade writing, recording, and performing music around the world. Reardon’s songs have been featured on multiple Spotify editorial playlists and Apple Music playlists, with over 7 million streams on Apple Music alone. She has shared the stage with renowned artists including Lori McKenna, Rodney Crowell, and Anaïs (ah-niiice) Mitchell, among others.
She spent three years based in Nashville and much of the past six years carrying her songs and stories all over the globe — including a six-month artist-in-residency stay in Dachau, Germany — gathering experiences, inspiration and soulful connections.
Her most recent profound EP’s, In the Good Light and Changes, were recorded in Barcelona with Catalan collaborators Pau Figueres (producer and one of Spain’s premiere instrumentalists) and Aniol Bestit Collellimir (recording engineer). Visit www.HayleyReardon.com for a full bio, photos, tour info, and links to her music. Her recent live album, Live at Starseed Studios, is available online on all streaming platforms, and the video recording is also available via Atwood Magazine online: Hayley Reardon Is Intimate, Up-Close & Personal on 'Live at Starseed Studios' - Atwood Magazine
