Last week I was invited by Sussex Police Federation to present at their officer roadshow / engagement event.
Many aspiring officers approached my stall and we had some good discussions about their views and concerns about promotion, leadership, and policing generally. In this debrief, I share some of those insights, my experiences of the event, and perspectives on what Sussex Police Federation are doing for their members.

Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Thompson, Treasurer and Dep Secretary of Sussex Police Federation. This followed an exciting engagement event they ran for officers at Sussex Police.
It was a really interesting perspective speaking to the Federation about support for officers, including shining a light on some innovative practices here in Sussex Police. Pay and morale survey, national and local Federation issues, the role of the Federation, professional standards, supporting officers to achieve success, training, scrutiny of officers, the fairness of promotion, their new Sussex Fed magazine, and more.

This week I had the privilege of interviewing Acting Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police, Jim Colwell. Jim has been standing in as Chief Constable for DCP since July 2023, stepping up to the position following the suspension of Will Kerr. And as another inspiring police senior leader, he doesn't disappoint, with this exclusive discussion providing valuable learning for aspiring police leaders everywhere.
A lot of ground is covered in the 40 minutes, including Jim's proudest moments in policing, advice for aspiring officers, views on compassion and other emerging values in policing, the step up to Superintendent, and much more. He also answers my question about what the 'Holy Grail' of police promotion might be.

What's the FAIREST police promotion process of the land? Interviews? Applications? Job performance? Inspired by commentary on police promotion processes recently by the Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys Police, I discuss the zeitgeist of police promotion processes. Officers moving to Australia: It's the talk of the town at the moment in policing. Both in terms of how disgruntled cops are handing in their warrant cards in droves, while Australian police forces are capitalising on the opportunity to poach good officers with a move overseas.

For S3E9, I'm trying a new format. I've been around the country interviewing Chief Constables and others for their perspectives on police leadership and promotion. In this interview, I turn the questions on myself! I invite my good friend Adrian to ask me questions of interest to police officers and promotion candidates alike, as a new perspective for your CPD. In this episode, we only got through one question: "Why is promotion unfair?" We did have others lined up, but will save them for another time seeing as this one itself took 45 mins to explore! For S3E5, I share a trilogy of related videos uploaded to YouTube last month, just before the Casey Review published. The themes are centred around violence against women and girls, and how VAWG may well feature on your promotion boards. You may find these audio versions helpful if you haven't seen the videos, or indeed just want a useful reminder on your commute now that the news focus has moved on to other things.
First, I cover the subject of conduct and setting standards. Then I talk through the NPCC's VAWG reports, covering all facets of that. Finally, I go in depth into the subject of investigations, specifically relating to the Elizabeth Stanko report on the police investigation of sexual offences. I include various promotion board questions and prompts for you as an aspiring leader to be aware of the zeitgeist around these wider policing issues. You'll also find relevant articles about VAWG, investigations, and ethics at my free blog (see links below).
