Happy World Tutor's Day! On this special occasion, we are thrilled to present our second live conversation on LinkedIn, featuring the exceptional Arthur Ponsonby from Right Tuition. Over the past few months, Arthur and I have enjoyed insightful discussions, consistently finding ourselves aligned in our views and passions for education. Today, I am eager to delve into our conversation and explore Arthur's journey and philosophy in the tutoring world.
Arthur began his career as a primary school teacher, a role that provided him with invaluable training. However, he soon realised that the traditional school setting did not align with his character and aspirations. Arthur shared, "The setting of a school is very particular, and that doesn't necessarily gel with people with lots of character flaws, such as myself. Don't respond well to authority, don't respond to a rules-based system."
Arthur's tuition centres are more than just places of learning; they are buzzing hubs of activity where pupils, parents, and teachers interact closely. The centres operate after school during the week and on weekends, creating a lively and engaging environment. Arthur emphasises the importance of social interaction and fun in learning. He believes in a balance between structured education and the freedom for teachers to teach creatively.

July 2nd marked World Tutors Day, a special occasion to celebrate the dedicated professionals who shape minds and inspire learning. This year, we had the pleasure of starting our day with Anne Morris, the founder of Yipiyap, a tutoring service that pairs near-peer tutors with students in need.
Anneβs journey to founding Yipiyap is an inspiring tale of passion and perseverance. A former secondary school maths teacher, Anne transitioned into accounting before starting her family. Her return to the workforce was driven by a desire to address the numeracy standards in the UK. She spotted an opportunity to bring tutoring into classrooms, not as private sessions but as integrated support within schools.
Her innovative idea was simple yet powerful: recruit highly academic gap-year students to serve as tutors in schools. This approach, unheard of in 2012, has grown substantially. Starting with just two tutors, Yipiyap now employs around 92 tutors, all committed to improving studentsβ academic performance.
Join us in this discussion as we share insights, success stories, the future, and how near-peer tutors can be particularly effective with students retaking their GCSEs.
