  • The Purple Day Podcast is the audio from our Monday episodes of Storytime in the Schoolhouse. Please note: Storytime is written and recorded for the screen. Some elements of Storytime will transfer better than others.

Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the Schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.

During circle time, we enjoy singing and reciting nature-based, seasonal songs and poems. We start a new circle time at the beginning of the month, slowly learning the songs and poems together throughout the month. We also practice a deep breathing exercise on Mondays.

After circle time, we listen to a story together. Ms. Becca tells us a Grandpa Ivy story the first week of each month. This week, we hear the story of Grandpa Ivy & the Fairy Baby. One full moon night, Grandpa Ivy is in his garden when he finds a fairy baby crying in one of his tulips. The fairy baby’s mama was out dancing under the full moon and left her baby in Grandpa Ivy’s garden, knowing she would be safe there. Grandpa Ivy keeps an eye on the fairy baby until her mama returns, rocking her back to sleep when she wakes.

An old man offered her a warm bed by the fire but said he had no food to share.

“That’s okay, she said, “I have a magic stone that makes the most delicious soup.”

Every Purple Day, or Monday, we are inside the schoolhouse for circle time and storytime.

During circle time, we learn seasonal songs and poems together. This week, we learn new lines and words to our poems, making our circle time slightly longer than last week. We also practice a mindful breathing exercise. This month we are learning balloon breathing.

After circle time, we hear a story together. The second week of each month, we hear a pedagogical or teaching tale. These stories address an upcoming change, difficult event, or challenging behavior. Today we hear the story of The Possum Who Didn’t Like Anything New.

Peter Possum didn’t like anything new. He didn’t enjoy meeting new people, playing outside when it was rainy, or going to new places. He would rather stay inside his mother’s pouch. This is mostly what he did until, much to his surprise; he became too big for his mother’s pouch. Peter then learns (with encouragement and support) that going to new places and meeting new people can be a lot of fun, even when it initially feels scary.

This story can help support children who are hesitant or fearful to try new things and/or meet new people.

Grandpa Ivy wakes up one summer morning and decides he is hungry for trout for dinner. So he takes his fishing rod and heads to the fishing hole, hoping to catch some trout. Grandpa Ivy casts his line three different times into the fishing hole. There is a tug on his line each time, but there isn't a fish when he reels it in.

Grandpa Ivy doesn’t catch any fish, but he does catch some pond grass, an old boot, and an old tire. Grandpa Ivy laughs on his way home, imagining what a meal he could make with grass, a boot, and a tire. “Sometimes you catch something, and sometimes you don’t.”

However, Buster Bear isn’t the first one awake and trying to catch a fish for breakfast. Walking along the river, he surprises someone already there, causing them to drop their fish on the river bank and run away. As Buster Bear walks along, he finds a trout flipping and flopping on the sandy river bank! Buster Bear doesn’t realize what has happened and thinks he has the greatest luck–this morning; the trout are coming to him!

Long ago, a girl named Wilma lived at the foot of a great mountain. There had not been rain for a long time, and the farms in her village had become dry. The people were worried they wouldn’t have anything to harvest. One day Wilma found a deep lake of fresh, clean water while exploring the mountain, and she knew this water could help her village. She found an overflow spot where she could bring the water to her village, but it was blocked by a stone gate secured with a lock! Wilma has to find the key to the gate so she can bring the water to her village.

Shimmer and Glimmer live with their fishy parents in a rocky cove in the sea. One day a big storm comes to the cove and causes it to change. Now it is two rocky coves instead of one, with one parent fish living on one side and the other living on the other. Thankfully, there is still a long path connecting the two coves. One of the first things the fishies do in their new home is gather some soft seaweed and make a cozy bed nestled in the rocks. Now they have a place to sleep in both coves.

One by one, his friends join him on his raft until it is quite full! As they go around a final turn before Grandpa Ivy’s home, the raft topples over and sends them all into the river laughing!
