  • Strippers and sex workers to the front!

Has mainstream pole dancing been taken away from the strippers who created it? And why is the Labour Party so backwards when it comes to sex worker rights?

Carmen Ali a.k.a. April Fiasco is a comedian, stripper, burlesque artist, co-founder of virtual socialist strip club Cybertease and Artistic Director of Sexquisite Events. We talk about how pole dancing on the job is different from learning in a studio, building your own strip club as a workers' cooperative, and the combined classism and whorephobia that comes crashing down on sex workers. She gives us the lowdown on how organisations like Sexquisite Events are pushing against this by platforming the creativity, writing and performance skills of sex worker artists. And then we go off on one about why Labour are so rubbish at sex worker rights, whether we're bad socialists, and the artistic power of cake.

  • Do all performers create a fantasy version of themselves? Can this help you in other parts of your life?

Launching the series like a glitter canon of sparkly stripper-style magic, it's Kitty Velour! Kitty is an internationally touring pole dancer, booty-popping princess, showgirl and dreamy aerial artist. She's as comfortable dangling off a hoop ten feet in the air as a unicorn mermaid as serving the filthiest floor work in a dimly-lit cabaret club. We talk about how "Kitty Velour" was created, how this has taken her on adventures all across the world, how to help other people let rip their most extravagantly fierce, sensual or technicolour selves, and flipping the script on narratives of female/queer sexuality and marginalised groups including sex workers.
