  • Imagine a life where you are trapped…imprisoned…in a cycle of addiction to alcohol, fentanyl, and food. Now imagine escaping that prison for a life that is far better than you can ever imagine. This is the story of today’s guest, Tim Kaufman.

At just 38 years old, Kaufman’s doctor essentially left him for dead. His weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides were through the roof, and his self-esteem and self-worth were…well…practically six feet under.

He was ready to give up on himself, his family, and his life. That is, until one day, he started making the smallest of changes. For him, it was getting out of his chair two times. That was it. One small change at a time.

This eventually led to a little research and he found Forks Over Knives, The Engine 2 Kitchen Rescue, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead… documentaries he credits with changing his life and his diet to a whole foods plant-based diet. Today, he is an accomplished athlete training for an IRONMAN triathlon and he just released his memoir, Escape-Breaking Free From A Self-Made Prison.

  • You may know Samantha Harris from her eight seasons co-hosting Dancing with the Stars, or her years of reporting for Entertainment Tonight and other media outlets.

You may also know her as an author and breast cancer survivor and advocate. In fact, this year she honors her 10-year breast “cancer-versary” by launching her new podcast, “Your Healthiest Healthy.” (Her book title of the same name)

Today, you’ll also get to know Samantha Harris as a PLANTSTRONG woman warrior who champions lifestyle change, self-care, and becoming your own health advocate in the face of adversity.

As a person who was constantly on stage and in front of the camera, Samantha thought she was doing all of the “healthy” things for herself. She ate well, she exercised, she went to the gym. After her cancer diagnosis, however, she realized that there was so much about the whole food, plant-based nutrition lifestyle she didn’t know - from the foods she eats to the makeup she puts on her face.

Today, she continues to make adaptations and tweaks to improve her health and well-being, and she teaches others to live their “healthiest healthy” by empowering them to make better choices in, on, and around their bodies.

  • Dr. Peter Johnston, a lifestyle medicine practitioner advocating for plant-based diets and environmental activism, shares his journey from his New Zealand roots as a sheep shearer to his personal and professional mission of shedding light on the impact of food systems on climate, health, and animal welfare.

Here’s the sobering truth: We can't feed the whole world today on a Western style diet. There just isn't enough land or resources. It will be even more impossible with the forecast of 10 billion people by mid century.

Dr. Johnston discusses the consequences of biodiversity loss, deforestation, overfishing, loss of insects, and antibiotic resistance, and the urgent need for sustainable practices to combat these issues.

He also proposes simple solutions for each of us to embrace plant-based alternatives and practices for a healthier planet and sustainable future.

Make That!” section where she recommends recipes based on what you have in your kitchen. So, no longer do you have to stare at the ripened banana and go, “I guess I’ll toss it!” Nope. Just open the book and go to town on some fantastic recipes.

Save money, reduce waste, eat healthier than ever before with Plant You Scrappy Cooking.

  • Inflammation is certainly a buzz word these days, isn’t it? Every time you turn around, you’re reading about something that’s causing inflammation in your body. It’s a minefield of misinformation and here to help clear up some of that confusion is educator and author, Linda Tyler, who recently released the book, The Plant-Based Anti-Inflammatory Cookbook.

Because inflammation is an emerging area of research, that makes it ripe for misleading advice and a lot of poor information. In fact, most can't even define exactly what it is.

Inflammation isn't all bad. In fact, it's actually your body's way of protecting itself against disease or injury. But what's happening, primarily because of the standard American diet, is that your body is constantly in a “fight or flight response” creating chronic inflammation. It’s this damaging state that can play a dangerous role in diseases, many types of cancer, aging, and even weight gain.

The good news is that you can reduce inflammation through your diet, and eating a healthy plant-based diet is especially helpful for calming the immune system.

The Plant-Based Anti-Inflammatory Cookbook delivers tasty plant-based recipes centered around foods known to play especially helpful roles in the fight against inflammation, including ginger, turmeric, garlic, berries, citrus, and high-fiber foods such as legumes and whole grains.

She also shares tips and recipes from her cookbook that incorporate all of these superstar foods. This conversation inspires mindful eating habits and highlights the joy of nourishing anti-inflammatory meals.

  • Dr. Rak Jotwani - aka Dr. RAK - is a lifestyle medicine physician who has the all-too familiar story…working long stressful hours in the hospital, eating the standard American diet, and managing crippling depression. It got to the point where he couldn’t be present for his own wife and kids because he just felt so tired and overwhelmed.

Dr. Rak shares his experiences with burnout in the medical field and the profound impact of meditation and a plant-based diet on his well-being. He now emphasizes the importance of whole food, plant-based nutrition and conscious living through his virtual lifestyle medicine practice, RAK Your Life.

Dr. Rak highlights the pillars of his practice - roots, awareness, and kindness - focusing on finding your personal “north star,” becoming more compassionate, and making kind decisions that are both good for us and make us feel good.

Instead of seeing change as a punishment, he sees it as an opportunity for improvement and THAT’s the medicine he practices daily now – helping others establish belief that they can make a change, that, yes, they can RAK their own lives.

  • Brittany Jaroudi battled weight and health issues for most of her childhood and, even as a young newlywed, suffered chest pains and panic attacks.

Lab tests confirmed she was on a dangerous trajectory similar to her parents. Her Dad had had a triple bypass and her Mom battled cancer multiple times when Brittany was young.

In 2016, after watching Forks over Knives, she and her husband adopted a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle and the changes in all of her health markers have been remarkable.

Today, this former school teacher has gone all in on her own health curriculum with on-line classes and cooking demos open to all, leaving a impactful legacy for her late Mother.

Brittany's story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to improve their health and sow lasting seeds of change.

  • Scott Harrington, DO is a West Point grad who proudly served in the US Army as a Family Medicine Doctor, Flight Surgeon and Dive Medical Officer.

His journey to plant-based nutrition may sound familiar. As a practicing physician and US Army Family Medicine Doctor, Scott was doing what most doctors do - seeing as many patients as possible and writing plenty of prescriptions.

His own physical and mental health was in decline until he watched Forks Over Knives on an airplane at the recommendation of a military colleague. By the time the plane landed, he was a changed man.

In 2020, he started his own telehealth practice, Vegan Primary Care, where he now works with patients to improve chronic illness and thrive on a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Today, he shares his personal and poignant journey to plant-based nutrition, his experience in the U.S. Army, and his insights on various health topics such as vitamin D, fiber intake, calcium, and the importance of building strong bones.

We salute you, Dr. Harrington, for your service to our country and the service of your patients.

  • In 2016, Carleigh Bodrug started her blog, PlantYou, with one goal - to show the world that eating plants is not only healthy, but also FUN.

Since then, Carleigh and her ever-growing team have amassed over 10 million followers (and growing!) across her social platforms, and she’s even released a New York Times Best Selling Cookbook, PlantYou.

Today, we get a peek under the PlantYou curtain as Rip and Carleigh catch up and talk about her meteoric rise in the last eight years. Carleigh shares her authentic and fresh approach to content creation, inspiration for recipes, and tips for creating plant-based meals on a budget.

We also get an exclusive sneak preview of her next book, Scrappy Cooking, which is being released in April, 2024. It will, no doubt, dazzle and inspire readers to save money, reduce food waste and eat healthier - all while having fun.

The book equips readers with not only the tools to make the most of their scraps, but use up just about any vegetable, grain, or bean from their fridge and pantry.

Scrappy Cooking not only puts the focus on eating a diet that's more conscious for our environment (and our wallets) but our health as well. Every recipe in the book is vegan, almost entirely oil free, and focuses on whole, plant-based foods that are good for our bodies and the planet.

Rip encourages listeners to pre-order Scrappy Cooking as those numbers do count towards the first week sales numbers, but, more importantly, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness of the goodness that is whole-food, plant-based nutrition.

  • From “Chicago Med” to a cozy Michigan farm…

Today, we talk love, compassion, and self-care with actress, musician, and philanthropist, Torrey DeVitto.

You may know Torrey from her six-years on the TV Show "Chicago Med" playing Natalie Manning, or from her many other film and TV credits, but she also spends a tremendous amount of time advocating for causes that encourage more compassion and conscious living.

Torrey is a self-proclaimed, “Jill of all Trades.” Her father, Liberty DeVitto, is the longtime drummer for Billy Joel so it’s no surprise that music was her first passion - excelling in violin at age 6. In addition to being a touring musician and actress, Torrey is also a dancer and model, where she works to promote eco-friendly fashion and makeup.

These days, though, you’re more than likely to find her on her farm in Michigan hanging with her new fiancé and having the occasional sloth day, which we definitely all need from time to time.
